Extended School holidays leaked document (Scotland )

What’s everyone’s feelings on the leaked document suggesting school holidays could be extended till the 11th January ? I think it makes sense to keep them shut for the week. Allowing everyone to not mix again for two weeks after the Christmas bubbles end . Seems like it could save a further even longer lockdown later on in January.

That's why the proposal to shut with a full week before Xmas day, at the moment many areas have only two or three days gap.

Peppafrig · 01/12/2020 13:54

Yes possums my school is due to close on the 22nd as things stand .

Decision still hasn’t been made she had just said. We will know by the end of the week.

Thanks, I missed that.

Although even the 18th only allows a five day breather before people are permitted to travel for Xmas.

It doesn't seem enough given the state of play at the moment.

rookiemere · 01/12/2020 16:04

18th is a reasonable compromise given that parents will be scrambling for last minute unplanned childcare. If they plan to shut any earlier how the heck can working parents factor that in ?
A just about workable reasonable compromise seems the only way to go and 18th to 25th is full week .

Possums4evr · 01/12/2020 16:36

I don't think that's a compromise is it, that is what has been proposed? Finishing on the 18th

dementedpixie · 01/12/2020 16:39

The issue is the proposed extension after Christmas until 11th January. 18th Dec finish doesn't bother me as they wouldn't be doing anything on the Monday or Tuesday of the next week anyway

Covidnomore · 01/12/2020 16:43

January is a tough month for many families.

What impact would it have on families pay checks of one or maybe even the main earner has to stay at home to look after the kids.

Many of these families will be struggling but won't get the extra £100 i think she promised.

How do they get through to the end of month?

Possums4evr · 01/12/2020 16:43

Where I am that would be three days. Do some regions go back later? Or some earlier? If you're due back on the fourth it's a whole extra week.
Other than childcare I don't think there is a justification for not putting a bit of distance between the 5 days of mixing and the mixing that goes on in schools. Childcare can be a big one though, but not for all parents.

dementedpixie · 01/12/2020 16:49

I'm north lanarkshire and the holidays would be;
Finish up end of school on 22nd Dec and go back 6th Jan

Covidnomore · 01/12/2020 16:58

Many parents use family for childcare, which in these circumstances they really shouldn't be doing.

My biggest issue with it, is that I believe it legitimises people having a really jolly Christmas.

I guess we have all heard 'give an inch and take a mile. Well I think she's given way more than an inch so how far will people go?

Yes, it may help the reduce the number of infections in those days, but how many additional infections would occur because she has essentially legitimised people going wild.

Assuming she makes that decision of course........

midnightstar66 · 01/12/2020 17:19

@Covidnomore well it is an all 4 nations approach which it did need to be as people have family all over, so guessing she'd have no choice but to go with the majority.

Covidnomore · 01/12/2020 17:36

midnight keeping schools closed for longer is not a 4 nation approach.

You have completely missed my point.........

"Its ok, I know you are all going to go crazy, so I'll give the kids an extra few days off school to try and mitigate that."

Thanks Nic. It's ok we've got 2 weeks after Xmas so we can do exactly what we want. Let's carry it on to Hogmany too.........

Possums4evr · 01/12/2020 17:53

The danger is already there from the five day relaxation though. That's the decision I would change, if I could.

Many will just mix before and after as won’t see why it’s any different than the five days. I know lots are anyway but this will certainly increase it.

Any good from lockdown will surely be undone and workplaces and schools full of cases in January. I feel for the NHS staff who will be out under even more pressure.

Peppafrig · 02/12/2020 19:21

Still no news today she is really not being fair with giving notice on this is she .

Apparently it’s being left to local councils to decide (don’t know if it’s true) really hope not if they all decide to do their own thing. Never been a fan of different councils having different holidays as it is.

If that is the case I’ll be working until 3pm 24th Dec and back on the 3rd Jan Grin

Peppafrig · 02/12/2020 22:45

Oh I hope that’s not true sweetkitty I live right on the border between two councils and my kids go to different schools in different council areas.

Announcement today says that there will be no changes with school holiday dates.
Teachers shafted again.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/12/2020 12:26

That was from John Swinney.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 03/12/2020 12:28

I am now going to very concerned going back after all the social mixing. Thank god I am only in on the Wednesday. 1 day thank goodness. I will be keeping myself distant and ensuring ventillation!

Peppafrig · 03/12/2020 13:36

Yes I think this is an awful idea from the government. To not have the extension .

OP posts:
mumwalk · 03/12/2020 14:40

We're not mixing with anyone, so very happy with the announcement. Kids have lost enough schooling. Perhaps they should ask those kids who are intending to bubble to self-isolate before they come back to school. That would assume no teachers bring it back with them, though.

Mistressiggi · 03/12/2020 15:35

I just don't care anymore. I catch it I catch it. There is no point in me giving a damn as the government certainly don't give one about me. Will not be forgotten though.

Oh ffs. it was a few days - one at the beginning and 3 at the other end.. For us, we stop on the Monday so completely ridiculous. The children will be hyper in the class and we finish at 2:30 so no learning will take place. So tired about hearing the loss of learning bla bla bla. Children will survive. They did in other circumstances. My own children were all disappointed by the news tbh. All the children i teach are fine. Really it is a terrible idea but hey ho. Heres to all the families spreading it in schools and to other families. Happy xmas!
