Extended School holidays leaked document (Scotland )

What’s everyone’s feelings on the leaked document suggesting school holidays could be extended till the 11th January ? I think it makes sense to keep them shut for the week. Allowing everyone to not mix again for two weeks after the Christmas bubbles end . Seems like it could save a further even longer lockdown later on in January.

Baws Who teacher bashed? It’s not the teachers fault if the schools are closed longer after the holidays.

3littlewords · 28/11/2020 20:49

If they are doing this whether it be just in Scotland or all over the UK they need to making some sort of official announcement to parents sooner rather than later so they can prepare. Not all children have a device at home, Internet access or are able to be left home alone. Its pretty shit for this to become official last minute

Covidnomore · 28/11/2020 20:51

I do not teacher bash and I never will.

I am eternally grateful for the brilliant job my kids teachers do, including during lockdown.

Doesn't mean that I think schools should close to allow a big jolly at Christmas.

I think the Scottish govt have got their priorities all wrong if they do us.

And blanket school closure should be because we are in full lockdown and its needed to get cases down significantly.

@Nicknacky
Are you new to MN? 🙄
Just read some threads on here and you’ll see if so! I love the way you make assumptions about me just like you do about teaching! 😂
You’re boring me now. 😴

Other people on other threads have been rude about teachers, therefore you're laying into people on this thread who haven't?

GoldenOmber · 28/11/2020 21:00

I don't know why this wasn't decided when all the governments were agreeing on Christmas plans. It just seems odd to still be having discussions about this now, when it's nearly December.

Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 21:02

Baws But this thread isn’t about teachers. It’s about the school closing.

What assumptions have I made about you?

Possums4evr · 28/11/2020 21:04

You don't need to work at home (as a pupil) for the same length of time you would in school. People who home educate generally don't. A lot of time in school goes on moving between classes (in those crowded corridors Wink) getting stuff out putting stuff away waiting your turn for the teacher's attention. You lose a lot being at home (no immediate answer to questions, no feedback from teacher while you're actually working, no interesting ideas from other students) but there are some gains too.

papaelf · 28/11/2020 21:33

I don't know why this wasn't decided when all the governments were agreeing on Christmas plans.

I'm quite sure it was. They have to sweeten the population up with the 'bubble at Christmas' announcement before the leak of 'talks' which have almost certainly taken place and a new announcement to follow.

You have obviously completely misunderstood my points!
By remote lessons I mean live lessons that can be accessed from home. Of course it’s not as good as actual face to face lessons but it’s not exactly uploading a worksheet created by someone else! I’m also not sure why you mentioned an extra week of holiday, where I live if the kids are not in school then we will still be in teaching live lessons as I am doing for most of my classes now.[/quote]
I really wish that was standard across the country. Sadly it's not. My sons English teacher didn't even put homework assignments on teams when he was self isolating so both him and a classmate had no idea they had to prepare a talk until the day they were meant to deliver it.

No live lessons here as apparently the la won't allow it.

And at primary level it's generic worksheets that are sent home that cover several classes eg p5-p7 so not even specific to their own class

Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 22:27

What a pity Baws didn’t come back. She never answered my question.

wondersun · 28/11/2020 22:35

We need this! Bubbles or no bubbles people will meet up at Christmas.
It’s crap but it’s a pandemic and it’s in all our interests to lessen its impact.
I wish they’d lock down before as well rather than pay for a worse scenario afterwards.

Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 22:36

wondersun There is no way they can do that with such little notice.

tigger1001 · 28/11/2020 22:37

This!

It's the way the government leak it to the press which causes stress to all concerned. Teachers need some notice if they are expected to deliver some kind of online lessons. Parents need notice so they can try to get childcare in place.

And not all schools have online lessons available - how will they deliver online content? Not all pupils have access to a device or good reliable internet or maybe they share a device and if the parent is working from home then the parents needs for access to the device will trump the child's.

It's just another way that education is being divided and some kids will really suffer as a result.

This is the problem though, there isn't a suggestion that there will be a lockdown after, so will go back to the rules of whatever level you live in, so shops etc open, kids sports on, kids out at parks, people working etc.
Covidnomore · 28/11/2020 22:50

wonder so my kids suffer because we are sensible. They don't get the family time as we think its not worth it when we are nearly there, and now they've to miss school too?

When not one single bubble has popped at their school?

Baws · 29/11/2020 00:04

@Nicknacky You really are a piece or work aren’t you? I have nothing to say to you. You clearly have a derogatory view of teachers that comes across in your posts. You come across as very condescending. Calling me bitter when you’re still tagging me hours after I’ve told you I have nothing further to say to you! Ok... 🤔😂
I hope you have a great Christmas and that you don’t have to spend too much extra time with your children! I’ll be enjoying the time with mine!

Nicknacky · 29/11/2020 00:11

Baws When did I call you bitter?

I won’t actually get to spend much time with my kids over their holidays as Im working a lot. Not because I don’t adore them, but because it’s part of my job.

I just hope when she tells her teacher that her teacher will understand that.

@Nicknacky Wow you’re a delight aren’t you? You’re obviously one of those types who just has to have the last word aren’t you? My reading and comprehension are just fine thanks, as is my ability to spot at complete arsehole when I encounter one! Your intentions came across clearly, you’re really not very bright are you if you can’t see that? I’m guessing your ‘high pressure job isn’t a highly paid one? I really pity you because you’re clearly very unpleasant. Seriously just shut up now. Oh and pleas don’t tag me again because I don’t give a shit what you think to be honest! 😂

DumplingsAndStew · 29/11/2020 02:16

Actually, @Baws didn't tag you, so you wouldn't have got the notification to come and look at the thread.

DumplingsAndStew · 29/11/2020 02:17

of course that meant to say that Nicknacky* didn't tag you

Baws · 29/11/2020 02:21

@DumplingsAndStew Are you talking to me? I’m confused...

Baws · 29/11/2020 02:28

@DumplingsAndStew 2 accounts just to come on a post and have a go at someone you don’t even know? 😂😂😂
Well whatever name you’re going by my points still stand!
A word of advice though, you might want to go back to school and learn how notifications work! 🙄😂
