Extended School holidays leaked document (Scotland )

Peppafrig · 27/11/2020 16:12

What’s everyone’s feelings on the leaked document suggesting school holidays could be extended till the 11th January ? I think it makes sense to keep them shut for the week. Allowing everyone to not mix again for two weeks after the Christmas bubbles end . Seems like it could save a further even longer lockdown later on in January.

Where was this leaked? Link?

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:28

It's all over the news, had been for hours.

It's bloody ridiculous. Our children have missed enough school without an extra week over Christmas so that people can meet up with aunt Mary and sup bloody brandy.

dementedpixie · 27/11/2020 16:30

Are they not talking about finishing up early for Christmas too?

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:32

Yes, but it would just be an extra week off.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/11/2020 16:33

Is it only Scotland?

Stellaris22 · 27/11/2020 16:34

I know a lot of people argue family is more important than education, and family is important.

But I am seriously concerned about how much education is being missed. The long term effect on children's future is terrifying. You might think 'oh, a week is nothing', but it's really important.

Kids can't keep being sacrificed just because adults can't understand a pandemic.

dementedpixie · 27/11/2020 16:35

Think they're talking about finishing on Friday 18th rather than into the next week. I know North Lanarkshire are due to finish at 2.30pm on Tuesday 22nd. They won't be doing anything on the Monday or Tuesday anyway.

PirateCatQueen · 27/11/2020 16:35

Seems pretty sensible really.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:37

@PirateCatQueen

Seems pretty sensible really.

In what world is getting a bunch of people together mid pandemic a good idea?

They sell us this shit and then suddenly, oh but your children will miss another week of school.

Ours already finish in the 18th and the college I work at is the 16th.

A week more is pushing it!

Mintylizzy9 · 27/11/2020 16:37

I’m in the NW and my sons primary is closing early on the 18th and not back until the 11th!!

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:38

Kids can't keep being sacrificed just because adults can't understand a pandemic.

This a million times over.

I am so bloody angry they are even considering it.

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/11/2020 16:39

At lest Scotland have some sense. People are going to “meet up with Aunt Mary” but it may not be Aunt Mary that dies, it’s Mrs X age 72 in ASDA who spent Christmas alone.

RaspberryCoulis · 27/11/2020 16:39

The Scottish government will have leaked it. It's their modus operandi. Oh look! the tiers have been leaked! The blended learning proposals have been leaked! Changes to the holidays have been leaked!

Yet another example of them thinking the voters' heads zip up the back and can't see what they're up to.

A few days doesn't make a lot of difference but stop it with the fucking "leaks" and have the balls to make the statement first.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:40

Sense? Where is the sense?

The sleekit way they are doing this makes me sick. Please the masses then a week later add the caveat about the kids missing another week.

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/11/2020 16:40

I am assume you are spending Christmas with your immediate household then and have only ever left your home for essential reasons since March?

AldiAisleofCrap · 27/11/2020 16:42

@Papaself because if you don’t try and limit things by allowing some mixing at Christmas the illegal mixing would be far worse.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:43

I am assume you are spending Christmas with your immediate household

Yes, I will be doing exactly that.

then and have only ever left your home for essential reasons since March?

I'm not sure what this has to do with mixing households at Christmas and children missing more education but I am happy for you to explain?

RaspberryCoulis · 27/11/2020 16:43

Oh and it's not really a full week. the first day of our school holidays was scheduled as Tuesday 22nd, so they'd miss the monday only. Then we were due back on Wednesday 6th Jan, so they'd miss 3 days that week.

4 days compared with no school at all from 23rd March to 13th August.

Plus in our secondary school, the senior S5 and S6 pupils are usually off for 2 weeks in January for study leave, they won't be back into school until around the 25th Jan.

Musicaltheatremum · 27/11/2020 16:44

But they will have to open for essential workers so there will be a number of kids in school. If not I'm going to be running my GP practice by myself as my 5 other colleagues have young school aged children and all their spouses are hospital doctors...that and giving the covid vaccine too. That will be fun

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:44
@Papaself because if you don’t try and limit things by allowing some mixing at Christmas the illegal mixing would be far worse.
I don't think it would be worse. People won't stick to limits. Those who were going to meet illegally won't suddenly decide to stick to a given limit.

PaddyF0dder · 27/11/2020 16:44

Christmas bubbles are idiotic.

Slightly longer Xmas holiday makes sense.

Best to consider them separately.

papaelf · 27/11/2020 16:45

Ok. Why is an extended break sensible?

starrynight19 · 27/11/2020 16:45

Something needs to happen to mitigate for families mixing over Xmas.
If anyone thinks that all schools will open as normal after Xmas they are deluded.
It will be many more children off isolating than there currently are. Schools having to close with not enough staff. It will be chaotic.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 27/11/2020 16:47

This one week missed at the beginning of term might save lots more weeks missed later, as bubbles burst all over the place, teachers become ill and students are onto their third or fourth lot of isolation.

Is a planned week better than lots of unplanned?
