Extended School holidays leaked document (Scotland )

What’s everyone’s feelings on the leaked document suggesting school holidays could be extended till the 11th January ? I think it makes sense to keep them shut for the week. Allowing everyone to not mix again for two weeks after the Christmas bubbles end . Seems like it could save a further even longer lockdown later on in January.

Longwhiskers14 only if you are meeting with the grandparents etc. We're not but I'm worried about the dc bringing the germs home after everyone else has mixed.

MadinMarch · 27/11/2020 18:14

Ok. Why is an extended break sensible?
Because it may slow the inevitable and exponential spread of the virus after all the Christmas mixing of households?

Honestly, we're in the middle of a pandemic. January could be carnage after the Xmas period and schools would have to close anyway, if so many pupils have the virus and teachers are sick too.
I really don't get why people couldn't accept a quieter Christmas this year, and just stay home. Exemptions for terminally ill people and those that would be alone on Xmas day.

Remmy123 · 27/11/2020 18:18

It's an absolute joke!!!!! I'd happily spend Christmas with my immediate family but my kids need an education!!!

My question was in response to the poster who said * Christmas bubbles are idiotic.

Slightly longer Xmas holiday makes sense.

Best to consider them separately.*

I was asking that poster why a slightly longer holiday made sense without considering Christmas bubbles.

cardibach · 27/11/2020 18:21

@ImPrincessAurora your post is really contradictory. You say your DC need to catch up but also that they’ve self isolated for 4 weeks already. Can’t you see that a planned week might prevent further 2 week isolations?

Parrish · 27/11/2020 18:23

I’m sick of this. And is this just state schools or will private schools be affected? I believe they have slightly different holidays to state anyway.

TicTacTwo · 27/11/2020 18:24

Very sensible to assume that there will be mixing on NY Eve and delay school restarting

ImPrincessAurora · 27/11/2020 18:29

@cardibach how?! If the rules are the same as this ‘lockdown’ people will be queueing up in costa as usual, the playgrounds will be rammed as they have been the entire time and people will be continuing to meet up with others for ‘socially distanced’ walks.
If anything it will drive people to mix more because they will have children at home going out of their minds with boredom. Again.

Parrish · 27/11/2020 18:29

And just fuck off with the Christmas mixing. No way should Nicola Sturgeon have agreed to that. There’s nothing for New Years just as there was nothing for Eid or Diwali celebrations. We should have gone our own way in Scotland. No way should my kids miss another week of school.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 27/11/2020 18:30

Not sure who is going to sit with my primary aged DC to do their remote learning whilst I am out doing my job as a community nurse 🤔

TicTacTwo · 27/11/2020 18:31

Ok. Why is an extended break sensible?

Even if you don't mix this Christmas and NY, there's plenty of people on here that have said that they will see family regardless of the rules. These are often people who have children on education.

People who don't have kids or have adult kids won't be so fussed if schools are open or closed. They will be more likely to mix as they "need to live a little" (direct quote I saw on MN) or think that there's going to be another lockdown in Jan/Feb so why not? Don't forget there are people who think that Covid are a hoax and will never get a test or self isolate after being contacted by T and T.

Speaking from Wales, our firebreak reduced cases and gave us until this week before another year group was isolated, when before it we couldn’t get one year back before another went home.

cardibach · 27/11/2020 18:32

Also @ImPrincessAurora why bored? We do a full online timetable...

Nicknacky · 27/11/2020 18:34

cardibach I genuinely have no idea who will sit with my 7 year old to do her full day schooling 🤷🏻‍♀️

papaelf · 27/11/2020 18:35

@TicTacTwo

The comment of mine you quoted was in direct response to someone suggesting we considered the issue of schools being closed separately for the issue of Christmas bubbles.

Iwonder777 · 27/11/2020 18:38

It's probably makes sense considering the Christmas bubble madness 😨

Attictroll · 27/11/2020 18:40

so painfully sad to think of DC missing more school. This country is obviously divided between those who would chose education over Christmas and those who put Christmas first. It's such a shame that those of us who would prefer a quiet Christmas and would do anything to keep education happening just have to suck it up. I have primary aged DC and work so you can't just do it remotely - the kids are behind, schools and teachers have not been supported enough by the government to make things safe.

wondersun · 27/11/2020 18:53

People will mix whatever the rules so better to put some mixing rules there.

I really hope the schools leaks are true. It would be great if a middle ground could be found so that children who’s best interests are better protected in school as well as vulnerable children and key worker children can attend.

In terms of missing a week of school causing harm I disagree though, I think the affects of the pandemic taking hold again and them losing relatives and significant grown ups is far more damaging.

I’m hoping that the new year sees an end to the inhumane forcing of all children into school and an acknowledgement that for some, temporary, remote education is best.

BelleSausage · 27/11/2020 19:01

I can’t see either of my parent this Christnas as I am a teacher and there are positive cases in school yet we are still open and students aren’t wearing masks in the classroom.

I think a circuit break for school is necessary. The kids are mixing freely and COVID is rampant amongst the older teens. We just aren’t testing for it.

Clearasmuddypuddles · 27/11/2020 19:05

If all the teenagers I teach are going to spend 5 days mixing with their cousins, aunties, friends etc with no social distancing inside then yes I would rather there was an extra week holiday before term restarts than them all bringing COVID back to school with them.

WeatherwaxOn · 27/11/2020 19:05

I get that kids are missing out on education but given the terrible examples of literacy and numeracy I see every day on social media from people aged 25-60, I don't think missing school makes a difference to be honest.
If blended learning or online classrooms can be set up, it should be do-able.

It's a huge shame we didn't deal with things properly around a year ago when rumours were appearing about a virus.

Clearasmuddypuddles · 27/11/2020 19:07

@BelleSausage snap! Luckily I only work part time and so have 10 days between my last contact with a student and Xmas day so I am hoping that is enough to minimise my risk and allow me to see some family for Boxing Day at least.

BelleSausage · 27/11/2020 19:14

@Clearasmuddypuddles

I actually feel quite ill about it all now. If things carry on as they are for much longer I’m resigning. I’m gutted because I love my school and my classes but I can’t continue under these conditions.

Brighterthansunflowers · 27/11/2020 19:18

I’m already fed up of all the extra restrictions that will be put in place for months either side of Christmas so people can travel around the country visiting people and spreading covid.

Clearasmuddypuddles · 27/11/2020 19:21

@BelleSausage I know staff that are considering calling in sick for the last week of term so that they have a period of isolation before seeing family over Xmas.

I started a thread on here the other day about the fact that I taught a positive student for 2 lessons this week but don’t have to isolate. I will have to attend work but will absolutely be isolating from my family.
