Christmas needs to be cancelled.

So the suggestion to make it possible for the world to go and be super spreaders at Christmas is to stay in lockdown until Christmas, then open up for five days, then go back into lockdown for another 25 days (at least), five days for every day we’re out of lockdown.

Are people really that desperate to have a get together they could have at any other time of the year, maybe in the summer when this pandemic is under control, that they’re willing to spend months in lockdown to achieve it? Really?

My personal opinion is that it is our duty as a society to have a low key Christmas regardless of whether they take this ridiculous measure or not.

I understand that for some they want to see family at Christmas, but these ridiculous suggestions have gone too far.

Just cancel Christmas and give us an extra bank holiday next year to make up for it.

Lostinacloud - that lack of investment is down the government we vote for.

@Sleazeyjet

*wasnt

Have you any fucking clue how much thought and planning has gone into this? The kids have been stuck in fucking university rooms for the last 2 weeks so they can get home. And my 80 year old aunt is moving out of her fucking house.

So that one of my children and their cousin can be there for 2 weeks.

We had to get special permission from the 2 universities involved from them to travel outside the fucking travel window.

It’s the very fucking bastard definition of not selfish.

Jesus fucking wept this place is vile.

I had a parent who was terminally ill for three years. Several times the doctors said "we think this is the end" due to chest infections, before finally reaching an "any day now" situation, which lasted nearly 6 weeks, before my parent died. It is massively upsetting, and I understand that it feels like no-one else knows what you're going through.

That said, your whole "fuck off" and "fucking this and that" is really unnecessary as posters keep saying that they understand if anyone has a terminally ill parent then what is considered an unnecessary family get together at Christmas obviously isn't relevant.

For the sake of your own mental health and blood pressure you should probably hide all threads like this.

RayOfSunshine2013 · 19/11/2020 20:00

I don’t know anyone who is following this anymore. They could ‘cancel’ Christmas if they like, however Christmas will be as usual in my house, rules or no rules

HeyBaby2020 · 19/11/2020 20:06

@Lweji

Clearly not all scientists agree with you.

Clearly they are dumb asses.

There's always one. Everywhere. It doesn't make them right. There is no fucking conspiracy or media hype.
There's a fucking new virus that will spread havoc in our society and our health system if we let it. It is already.

Oooh I’m so scared 😦

As if I let some little scaremonger like you tell me what I can and can’t do at Christmas

HeyBaby2020 · 19/11/2020 20:08

@Lweji

And fuck me, wishing my family earlier deaths gives me little faith in your compassion to the cause!

I didn't. Can you read?
You are the one risking it.

With your credentials surely you of all people should understand that experts have differing opinions and also that you have an opportunity to relay what you think is the correct information.

I'm through with conspiracy theories and minimising, when hospitals are full and death rates are climbing.
But people still peddle conspiracy theories and things like "this has to end". Tell that to the virus. It won't listen.

I am quite happy to discuss COVID with experts, even people who have questions, but not deniers. I'm done.

The likelihood of them causing a family death is almost 99.9% not gonna happen

You’re talking bollocks

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:24

Why Christmas and not NY OP. Got something booked in January?

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:25

Are you posting from Narnia OP

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:27

The rich had their ski trips They had their Cheltenham (whats the betting there is a lockdown to save Cheltenham 2021) They had their holidays in the summer. As someone who rents, who has done these lockdowns in a tiny flat who hasnt been abroad since the 80s, does not go to pubs or restaurants I want my family Christmas.
In this months Good Housekeeping it states that the Samaritans usually get 400,000 calls throughout December, 11,000 on Christmas Day alone. IMO there is a good chance it could be worse this year if the Government put restrictions in place. Also i would bet a penny to a pinch of shit that MPs and advisors will want to see their families regardless but wont want another Barnard Castle type scandal. Because lets face it the papers and journos will be watching them like hawks to see if they do practice what they preach. And after watching Dispatches Lockdown Chaos and the PPE and testing scandals im tired of being made a mug of while they cash in. For some people this could well be their last Christmas. Covid is not the only killer And dont forget the MPs took their summer recess rather than work through it to get this sorted. So Covid not serious enough to cancel their summer recess but serious enough to stop ppl seeing their families at Christmas?

And those elderly relatives who normally go to family members on Christmas Day may need an employed carer to go in that day instead. This has to be factored in as well

tigerstail · 19/11/2020 20:27

@MercyBooth lol, exactly everyone just wants it to suit them, probably loads of posters here looking forward to day at home instead of dinner at the inlaws. Thats why they are so keen for us to be locked down on christmas day!

tigerstail · 19/11/2020 20:29

@MercyBooth well said, excellent post!

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:31

And Piers Morgan had his holiday to St Tropez He wasnt calling for a lockdown just BEFORE he was due to fly out.

Why is it those lower down the socio economic scale who have to make all the sacrifices. Those who dont go abroad or who havent for years or cant afford to.

There are also those of us who are child free by choice sucking up this current lockdown so that others kids can stay in school.

Ive complied so far. Stop shitting on that and pushing it!!!

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2020 20:32

Tbf Mercy, im not terribly sure anyone in Johnson extended family will be terribly keen on him gracing them with his presence on Christmas Day....

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:35

@Nottherealslimshady Quote from Ken Marsh chairman of the Met Police Federation. "People are likely to ignore the restrictions on Christmas Day anyway. The police are not going to go around dishing out fines to people when they are cutting their Christmas turkey"

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 20:45

So when can we expect the big announcement that the Christmas adverts featuring families will all be pulled off air.
For the psychological good of the country surely. It wont be good to keep having salt rubbed in the wound every time you watch Corrie Im A Celeb etc. Not to mention Phil Schofields How To Spend It Well At Christmas.

Having salt rubbed into the wound like this will cause anger and resentment to build until the pressure cooker finally boils over.......................

GetOffYourHighHorse · 19/11/2020 20:56

'Having salt rubbed into the wound like this will cause anger and resentment to build until the pressure cooker finally boils over......................'

Oh fgs grow up. You aren't a teen being sent to your room, it is to protect people. Keep it to a minimum is all they'll probably say, no need to start a revolution just yet.

Nottherealslimshady · 19/11/2020 21:02

@MercyBooth I said they should, not they will.

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 21:13

Funny isnt it, the ones who endlessly fart on about 'The War' and 'Snowflakes' are the first ones to lose their shit when they might have to have a lowkey christmas

Stuff your war comparison. My mum is in her 80s and was running a farm at SEVEN years old because Nonno was conscripted into the Italian Army. It was fucking hard for poorer ppl in Italy during and after the war. DM was ringing me up during the first lockdown crying cos she missed me.. We are having our family Christmas 2 households possibly 3 if DB comes. No more than 6 ppl i have a new great nephew who arrived yesterday , My nephew and his girlfriend toddler and new babe we will be in touch by phone.

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 21:16

@RedToothBrush Im done Im not doing it anymore Ive complied all the way. If this is the attitude from ppl though they can shove it. Why the fuck should i care about them when they dont give a rats about me.

RedToothBrush · 19/11/2020 21:23

I still don’t understand why the emphasis isn’t on making hospital capacity larger? Especially if this affects mortality rates

You can only increase capacity with extra staff. We cant increase staff quickly enough because we cant train them within the timeframe needed and that also applies to trying to get staff from overseas unfortunately.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 19/11/2020 21:24

YANBU. Our family haven’t all been able to together since last Christmas, we miss each other terribly, and as Christians that time of year has religious significance too, but we need to make this sacrifice so that we can keep each other safe, and for the sake of the economy- the less we are prepared to give up, the longer the world around us had to stay closed to us instead.
Previous generations did much more, we can and should do this.

Lweji · 19/11/2020 21:32

The likelihood of them causing a family death is almost 99.9% not gonna happen

Can you explain your reasoning?
It's your thinking that has led to the rising cases that we see. Apparently it doesn’t happen to us. Only others. Guess what? It does happen to some people.
And the more people you have at home the higher the risk.

Lweji · 19/11/2020 21:36

I still don’t understand why the emphasis isn’t on making hospital capacity larger?

How, and in particular, how to increase the professionals.
You can get more beds and even equipment, but you need trained people to care for the patients.
There are solutions to increase a bit, but there are limits.
And the professionals also get sick, and have families and need to rest.

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 21:38

Not much peace or goodwill from the selfish flouters is there

And yet you were standing up for Dominic Cummings earlier this year

Which beautifully illustrates my earlier point about people lower down the socio economic scale being held to higher expectations and being expected to make more of the sacrifices.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 19/11/2020 21:45

'Which beautifully illustrates my earlier point about people lower down the socio economic scale being held to higher expectations and being expected to make more of the sacrifices.'

Doesn't 'beautifully illustrate' anything. I'd have said the same if someone on benefits had travelled to their parents separate accommodation to ensure childcare was available if needed.

The virus doesn't care if you're well off or penniless. Get a load of people in one room and it's going to spread.

MercyBooth · 19/11/2020 21:45

All of this "could be our last Xmas" schmeer is utter sentimental rubbish

And Protect The NHS is emotional blackmail. Most didnt care on 12 December last year Heres a reminder.
