Worried that the military and NHS are on standby to deliver vaccines

Just heard this on the BBC news at 6.Does this mean the military will be injecting people? Will it be mandatory for certain groups? This is rather worrying.

They have surprisingly ordered more potential vaccines per head than any other country.

Funny that when they don't give a flying fuck about test and trace.

The logistics involved with millions of vaccine doses needing to be transported, stored and administered within a -80C cold chain are HUGE. With such an unstable vaccine there is potential for people to receive an ineffective does if protocols aren’t followed and records not kept (or are fudged).

Which is why the military will be looking after this aspect given this is the sort of thing they, as an organisation, are specialised in.

HMSSophie · 12/11/2020 08:50

Sometimes I find myself wondering about our education system, I really do.

What we need are more scientists and fewer fucking idiots.

HoppingPavlova · 12/11/2020 08:52

My thinking re competence etc. We may have millions of doses available, but have they ordered the special fridges needed, the syringes and needles? Or will they suddenly discover on day one of the vaccine roll out that they've not got enough needles/syringes, or that the ones they have are out of date or damaged etc?? The NHS/civil servants don't seem to understand lateral thinking logic and just lurch from one crisis to another (often of their own making).

Again, hence this needs to be a military logistical operation as they do understand on the ground logic and employ lateral thinking to rapidly mobilise and implement what is required.

TeenPlusTwenties · 12/11/2020 08:52

HMS The 'new' Combined science GCSE (which is virtually compulsory) has a good section on vaccines & development. iirc it wasn't there in the 'old' double science.

Ginfordinner · 12/11/2020 09:10

As the parent of a DC who is studying biomedical sciences, and helped with A level biology and chemistry revision I would like to think I have a slightly better understanding of how vaccines work.

Can I also recommend watching Michael Mosley's Pain, Pus and Poison: The Search for Modern Medicines on iPlayer. It explains the process of vaccination really well. The way smallpox was totally eradicated all over the world was an astonishing achievement.

I actually think more history needs to be taught. Not the seriously historical Roman's, Egyptian and Vikings but stuff from the last 150 - 300 years. How we got to where we are now.

The changes in the last 150 years are huge.

diplodocusinermine · 12/11/2020 09:24

HMSSophie Grin.

OP, stop stirring, you're coming across as completely ridiculous now. If you don't want to have the vaccine then don't - leaves more doses for them as wants it.

firedragon101 · 12/11/2020 09:39

@Sheogorath

Yeah, they're going to be sticking needles in machine guns and firing them at people. Hmm
That would save a lot of manpower😂

Watch Doctors on deck on this morning. Even Ranj, a mainstream doctor said is you were cynical the release of this vaccine data may be linked to the stock market.

Well, having a vaccine would be of immense benefit to the economy. But of course that is the opinion of one TV doctor, so not really evidence of anything at all.

But keep digging.

BurningRose · 12/11/2020 11:13

A pretty prominent, mainstream doctor on national prime time TV.

I don't think it requires you to be particularly cynical to wonder what releasing the news now is designed to achieve. Given the news isn't that it's actually ready right now, just that it's nearly ready-ish.

It's fairly common knowledge that good news can be released at a certain time to hide bad news.

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 12/11/2020 11:18

That doesn't really have anything to do with worries about the army vaccinating, worries about vaccines in general, or measles parties, though. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2020 11:21

Surely it’s more likely Pfizer just wanted to be first.

Except UK is also testing more than any other country in Europe, and one of the highest in the world.

What’s that got to do with it?

Are you really that desperate to stir up fear and uncertainty about a life saving breakthrough that is going to change the lives of millions? That’s a bit sad. You must be loving this pandemic.

LemonTT · 12/11/2020 13:34

The vaccine race has always been there for the big companies. Three are neck and neck. It was widely rumoured that Oxford would announce efficiency and safety within a week or two.

The stock market will jump again when that happens. And again when the others come on line.

4ds02719 · 12/11/2020 13:40

I'm starting to feel your original op was disingenuous. You've been reassured that military involvement is down to scale not authoritarianism and now you're still thinking of things to be annoyed about.

4ds02719 · 12/11/2020 13:40

Were you ever scared in the first place or was this a stealthy attempt to scare others?

Ohh. You mean like Dr Andrew Wakefield? Well if he's on TV I suppose he must be right.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/11/2020 13:50

Of course Wakefield's been in an actual film, so that must make him even more right. (Also the film poster has a syringe and a big red X, which proves conclusively that vaccines are dangerous.)

Err you do know that the stock market changes dependant on current events that impact the value of the shares right ? The point of it (simplified) is that it changes as world events change because it impacts the concept of value.

The market value changes faster than the media reports. So you have stated an obvious normal process that happens all the time and managed to make it sound sinister. I do apologise, you repeated a doctor on TV in such a context to make it sound sinister Hmm.

BurningRose · 12/11/2020 13:50

I would just like to hope people do a bit of background reading on safety before they trust anyone to inject a new technology vaccine into their body.
