Worried that the military and NHS are on standby to deliver vaccines

Just heard this on the BBC news at 6.Does this mean the military will be injecting people? Will it be mandatory for certain groups? This is rather worrying.

Some people really need to read this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_aid_to_the_civil_authorities?wprov=sfla1

MACA or Military Aid to Civil Authority is a thing and has been for years. Soldiers driving Green Goddesses during the fire fighters strike - MACA, soldiers distributing sand bags and using inflatable boats to get people out of their houses during flooding - MACA, soldiers acting as additional firefighters during the wildfires - MACA.

The military is a large pool of resource with lots of skills that don't involve weapons. They can be trained to do different tasks relatively quickly and can be moved around at short notice, why wouldn't they be used where civil authorities either don't have sufficient resource or would struggle to deploy it at short notice.

Well op I find people who use derogatory terms against anyone who doesn't share their views to be rather unpleasant individuals. This of course cuts both ways.
To be honest I am no lockdown enthusiast but quite frankly some of the stuff COVID deniers have come up with is so bizarre.
I have a friend for example who needs surgery to cure crippling pain. She won't have a COVID test to enable the surgery as she believes the Nano particles in the test is going to alter her DNA. Not quite sure how a cotton swab on a stick can do this.
She also genuinely believes that many COVID positive tests are actually caused by tbe flu jab and that anyone who has any ill effects from the virus must be on there last legs and that they would be ok as long as they built up their immune system. This hurt given she knows my dh is immuno suppressed.
Anyway the most vocal on Mumsnet seem to be the most extreme views.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/11/2020 14:48

If the NHS can't cope with it, that is because the NHS is no longer fit for purpose, not because Covid is so bloody special that it deserves to have entire livelihoods blown apart. How do you explain that the same thing is happening around the world in countries with different health care systems?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/11/2020 15:04

@BurningRose

Most of us would already be dead from things like measles if it wasn’t for vaccinations. grin

Doubt it! They held measles parties in the olden days. Better sanitation and nutrition has helped irradicate a lot of diseases.

The fact that people held measles parties doesn't mean it wasn't also a profoundly stupid thing to do.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/11/2020 15:05

(BTW I know it wasn't you who said that @BurningRose!)

Mariebarrone · 11/11/2020 15:17

The nhs is already casting around for people to give the vaccine. (Retired nurse here who has come back on the NMC register due to covid).
I would honestly work for free to give this vaccine if they paid my petrol and car parking (don’t tell Matt Hancock, please).

Most sane people will be queuing up to have a vaccine that will save millions of lives and return life to normal.

Why anyone would be against a vaccine is beyond me!

Chathamhouserules · 11/11/2020 15:40

I wonder if there may be situations where you will need to prove you were vaccinated in order to do particular activities?
This is one aspect of creeping authoritarianism. But let's us all trust a needle to solve all our problems 🙄*

What point are you making here? That people shouldn't use a vaccine because it's not the answer to all our probs? I don't think anyone is saying that it is? And there has been no suggestion of banning non vaccinated people.
I think your worries about the army have hopefully reduced by everyone's very good points about their logistics expertise and how easy it is to administer vaccines.

HitchikersGuide · 11/11/2020 15:44

It's pretty optimistic to think that the government would be competent enough to organise the logistics of vaccinating everyone, even with the army's help. I should think they will be very grateful to those who don't want it!

My thinking re competence etc. We may have millions of doses available, but have they ordered the special fridges needed, the syringes and needles? Or will they suddenly discover on day one of the vaccine roll out that they've not got enough needles/syringes, or that the ones they have are out of date or damaged etc?? The NHS/civil servants don't seem to understand lateral thinking logic and just lurch from one crisis to another (often of their own making).
emmskie03 · 11/11/2020 16:42

This isn't quite accurate. You may have noticed the news advising us that the Pfizer vaccine is 90% effective. Meaning that there is always a risk that the vaccine will not be entirely effective.

It also means that people who cannot be vaccinated are at risk. And even though there are some groups at low risk of the virus, ultimately there's always a chance that you'll infect someone who then becomes one of those young people who get very ill or die.

Honestly, if it was simply a case of you not vaccinating only being a risk to yourself people would say crack on. But that's not the case.

Honestly

MarshaBradyo · 11/11/2020 16:45

I’d be more concerned if they weren’t on standby. It’s a huge undertaking.

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2020 17:00

Day one of rollout ;
' where's the fridges , Matt? '
' Over there , but you've got to get your boss out of it first'!
Oh ..

BurningRose · 11/11/2020 17:09

Hopefully no one will burn their fingers off extracting the vials from the minus 80 degrees solution.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/11/2020 17:11

Apparently the Pfizer vaccine can be stored for up to 5 days in a normal fridge, @BurningRose.

TheRealJeanLouise · 11/11/2020 17:13

I take things and put things in liquid nitrogen every single day. I even have to use a -80 freezer. Not one injury to my name.

pointythings · 11/11/2020 17:33

Of course they won't. Because, you know... Training. When I worked in research, some of my colleagues used -80C fridges all the time. No accidents whatsoever. Dry ice training is another one of those things that don't take all that long - it's a day long course.
@SaskiaRembrandt why are sheeple obsessed with conspiracy theorists?
Non-conspiracy theorists are not obsessed with conspiracy theorists (are you admitting you are one?). We just get exasperated with you constantly trying to push your fantasies on to us with your constant parroting of the same old mantras about sheeple, opening eyes, thinking for yourself and WAKING UP. It is absurd that you all seem to think watching Youtube videos of some randomer constitutes 'doing your own research' and that that means you are the 'critical thinkers' (two more of the favourite mantras parroted over and over again). It didn't really matter much before the pandemic, it was just annoying. Now it is actually dangerous.

thedevilinablackdress · 11/11/2020 18:00

Been vaccinated against Polio OP? Fancy seeing that come back? After seeing how it affected an older member of my family, I certainly don't.

Perhaps they should give this Covid vaccine as a sugar cube. More enticing?
SheepandCow · 11/11/2020 18:05

I have my very own conspiracy theory.
The government wants to encourage anti vaxxers... because there won't be nearly enough vaccine to go round for months and months.

thedevilinablackdress · 11/11/2020 18:08

@SheepandCow yes, it'd be harder to get into a froth about that than NEEDLES!!!!Grin

thedevilinablackdress · 11/11/2020 18:09

The army are coming round giving us sugar cubes!!!

You need yellow fever vaccine to go certain places... Why would this be any different?
