Worried that the military and NHS are on standby to deliver vaccines

Just heard this on the BBC news at 6.Does this mean the military will be injecting people? Will it be mandatory for certain groups? This is rather worrying.

Am I the only one that doesn’t want the vaccine?Everyone on this post seems like they’re definitely going to have it when offered. There are a few things I’d like to know I guess which is why I have reservations. Like long term effects (remember the swine flu vaccine and the thalidomide drug for example) and also I’m interested to know the effects the vaccine might have on those who have already had covid as that hasn’t been tested yet. I guess I’m just curious as everyone seems to want it and those that say they don’t are shot down as anti-vaxxers when I think it’s a normal reaction to want to know everything about something before putting it in your body. I think it’s a fantastic thing by the way because normal life can resume! It is such wonderful news but I get why some people may not want it if they are not in any of the at-risk groups. And I am not an anti-vaxxer.

For what it’s worth I don’t think it’ll be mandatory to have one but it was a worry of mine at the start (I do have anxiety though) especially as a history buff knowing what other governments have got away with in the past.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/11/2020 20:20

@Gancanny

You also forgot mutated DNA. If we get to choose our mutant powers in advance then I'd like whichever vaccine will give me the ability to teleport.
To be fair, I’d be happy with any moderate superpower but the ability to teleport would be awesome.
LemonTT · 10/11/2020 20:21

As an added bonus for those looking forward to a bit of military hardware on vacs day, there is a 10 minute recovery period with those hunky lads and lasses.

For the OP, this is clearly a case of forced internment.

Jaxhog · 10/11/2020 20:22

Having seen the military first hand managing the 2012 Olympic entry queues, I'd say we are in good hands with them. They were awesome.

BurningRose · 10/11/2020 20:24

Those firing the insults at me. Where is the nastiness coming from? Why so defensive?

OP posts:
Bunnyfuller · 10/11/2020 20:26

It’s sticking a needle into an arm fgs.

Ever heard of IVF, you don’t even get injection training for that, and yet thousands manage.

Jesus.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 10/11/2020 20:26

I was briefly engaged to an army medic before meeting MrCarpet. He had very skilful hands.
Can we specify that we will only be vaccinated by soldiers? Better still, can we select which one?Grin

Tistheseason17 · 10/11/2020 20:26

@Sidge @Mintychoc1

Another GP land bod here. How I laughed when the government said we were poised to work 8-8 7 days whilst still doing the day job and we will not actually getting paid if the patient doesn't come for their second dose.

I thought, where must we sign up for this pleasure...

If the army comes I will be overjoyed so we don't have to cancel vital patient clinics.

goldenharvest · 10/11/2020 20:26

Why the anxiety re non medical people administering vaccines? It's something that can be taught in half an hour and is incredibly simple. Stop being silly

Mochudubh · 10/11/2020 20:27

From the article you quoted OP. (my bold)

"Safety: RNA vaccines are not made with pathogen particles or inactivated pathogen, so are non-infectious. RNA does not integrate itself into the host genome and the RNA strand in the vaccine is degraded once the protein is made"

dltk · 10/11/2020 20:27

I hate to break it to you OP but I had a positive antibody test in July after having covid and my antibody test a few weeks ago was negative so your natural immunity could very well be short lived!

CandyLeBonBon · 10/11/2020 20:27

@FreshFreesias

I’m with you, OP. This worries me too. I have a feeling that vaccines will be made compulsory for travel and jobs.
What like the vaccinations you have to have before you travel to certain countries??? Confused
Gancanny · 10/11/2020 20:29

I wasn't hugged enough as a child. I also hide my GAD and PTSD under a thin veneer of sarcasm, gallows humour, and low tolerance for fools.

Can we specify that we will only be vaccinated by soldiers? Better still, can we select which one?

Perhaps some sort of catalogue could be issued beforehand where you select your squaddie and then rock up at the vaccination site with your order number written down, sort of like a sexy Argos.

It's OK no need to break anything to me. Antibodies are only one aspect of immunity.

Do you think they'll hold me firmly if I ask nicely?

reginafalange2020 · 10/11/2020 20:30

@mumwon

My flu jab was done by pharmacist!
Pharmacist are highly trained medical professionals
ClaireP20 · 10/11/2020 20:30

@muddledmidget

The vaccine won't be mandatory, but the military are the best resource we have to deliver a vaccination programme of this size, in terms of the logistics of setting things up, transporting the vaccine to the vaccination centres (particularly if it's the Pfizer vaccine that has to be kept frozen) and have a large number of medically trained personnel to assist with the vaccinations.

Personally I'd rather have them than Serco involved in the vaccination programme

God yeah - please not Serco!! We really would have a problem x

But what makes you think the Covid-19 vaccine won't go through strict testimonials? What makes you think the industry's hasn't learned from the past?
dinglethedragon · 10/11/2020 20:32

@BurningRose

*I had a positive covid test a few months ago so I won't need a vaccine. I now have natural immunity. Wow! No you don’t*

Wow covid must be the first ever coronavirus that doesn't produce an immune response.

ahem. The common cold?

OP Can you elaborate on your knowledge of natural immunity
BurningRose · 10/11/2020 20:34

The blind trust many of you have in authority kind of worries me to be honest. Just like matt Hancock quoting 'the science'. There are many scientists with many different theories and many different scientific paradigms. There is nothing wrong with questioning things unless you are very frightened of not being a sheep and following the crowd and following orders.

Aposterhasnoname · 10/11/2020 20:35

@BurningRose

Hmm I never mentioned the army firing needles. You are making shit up.
Well you started it!
GypsyWanderer · 10/11/2020 20:35

That’s just it, I don’t know. Which is why I would want to research into that before I had the vaccine and it just seems too early at the moment. I’m not dead set against having it if I needed to. I want my disabled DM to have it and my elderly DMIL so it’s not as if I’m scared it’s dangerous. Just weighing up the pros and cons with a vaccine that’s so new.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/11/2020 20:36

You know OP if you're struggling with your mental health, I get it. But if you're trying to imply you know better/more than actual scientists then you are the one being insulting.
