"Boris Johnson is holding a press conference with Sir Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, at 5pm, No 10 has announced."

What do we think he’s going to say? I’m a bit worried about what he might say.

But I can pretty much guarantee he won’t be on time at 5pm, I’m guessing more like 6!

I dont care about christmas I care about getting my actual life back. I dont want parties over christmas and new year and then another lockdown it is unsustainable

emmcan · 05/11/2020 16:12

Announcing another baby on the way with the next one, before Hancock leaks that actually there is already a next next one...

ClaireP20 · 05/11/2020 16:14

@Genevieva

He is a coward. He will be trying to justify the biggest theft of civil liberty in our history, including powers to let 'any relevant person' use force against civilians who are deemed to be breaking lockdown. But 'reasonable person' is not in the list of terms so it is not clear who a reasonable person is. What we can be sure of though is that it is broader than just the police.

Yesterday Theresa May looked like a statesman. She was articulate and persuasive. But he didn't listen. He scuttled out of the chamber as soon as she stood to speak. He has reached a new low in my estimation. The Conservatives better have a coup before the next election because he is unelectable.

Please, if you haven't, listen to Dr Michael Yeadon. Please look into the stats that show that hospital admissions for respiratory infections are within the normal range despite the addition of another endemic coronavirus. The deaths that are higher than usual are:

 • cancer patients aged 45-65
 • suicides
 • domestic violence -related
 • stillbirths
Oh Michael Yeadon..he of the 'it's all false positives' and 'no scientific evidence anywhere in the world to support the possibility of a second wave' claims. He actually believes that all the hospitals across the world must have all agreed to lie about their rapidly increasing covid rates. He takes a quote from Matt Hancock 'less than 1% of tests are false positives'. Adds his own brand of stats. Decides 90% of covid cases are false positives. Most scientists dispute him. Most conspiracy theorists support him. Most conspiracy theorists dislike the government, hence the ease with which they are willing to support him..

What’s really dangerous here is that his lies (for that is what they are) are eroding the trust in the test and trace system. People believe his supposition, which then negatively effects public behaviour at a time when that is crucially needed.

You are, however absolutely right about the death rate, especially amongst our elderly and vulnerable. The BMJ thinks it is because they want to be 'stoic' and not bother the NHS during this time. Clearly there isn't enough support. Suicide rates are, devastatingly, at an all time high, although this was rising dramatically before the pandemic and is not thought to have increased because of the pandemic.

quiteathome · 05/11/2020 16:16

Will just be an attempt at a morale boosting speech. We are all in it together etc etc. On the first day lockdown- you can do it. Waffle waffle. New three phrase slogan. Two legs good, Tory legs better.

Stay in to save NHS- obviously funding would not work to do that. Blah blah blah

I started a drinking game on Saturday. It did not end well.

Splodgetastic · 05/11/2020 16:16

@kittensarecute Stopping talking about it doesn’t mean it won’t happen unfortunately.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 05/11/2020 16:17

Christmas is a religious festival and commemoration. It can't be cancelled.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/11/2020 16:20

Christmas is a religious festival and commemoration. It can't be cancelled. The same could have been said of Eid though!

Benjispruce2 · 05/11/2020 16:21

Robust, robust, robust, wash hands, teachers don’t get covid, robust, robust, wash your hands.

kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 16:21
@kittensarecute Stopping talking about it doesn’t mean it won’t happen unfortunately.
But we were told 4 weeks, nothing was said about extending it.

fudgecat · 05/11/2020 16:24

@hopewardrobe

Next slide please
🤣🤣🤣
JacobReesMogadishu · 05/11/2020 16:24

@PatriciaPerch

I hope he hasn't got Micheal Gove pregnant
I hope not too! A mash up of Gove and Boris would not be a pretty site. Poor kid.
doubleshotespresso · 05/11/2020 16:29

@Fawnfour

Will people finally listen, doubtful
No idea did you check with Dominic?
TicTacTwo · 05/11/2020 16:30

Religious Easter celebrations were cancelled
nosswith · 05/11/2020 16:31

Thank you for the warning that Pointless might be on BBC2.

My worry is not what he will say but that he is still Prime Minister. The best thing he could do is resign.

Splodgetastic · 05/11/2020 16:31

@kittensarecute, Michael Gove said it might be and they have done so many U-turns anyway. Since when do you believe a word they say? I don’t make the rules! I am sorry your mental health is suffering. Have you spoken to anyone about it?

ListeningQuietly · 05/11/2020 16:33

@JoeBidenIsGreat

Christmas will still happen. It just will not involve large gatherings, consumer excess and all the other modern paraphernalia. The date was chosen to go with the Winter Solstice and that will happen because the planets keep moving.
Saucery · 05/11/2020 16:35

@Thatwentbadly

Nothing has been leaked in the press so it can’t be important.
This.

It will just be a “come on, freedom loving people of Britain, put down that sparkler and get back inside” waffle.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/11/2020 16:39

FWIW the delay to the last press conference was because someone in government leaked the info about lockdown and it was a mad scramble to get everyone together and agree on what to say.

It wasn't BJ's fault entirely- people say it was Hancock who leaked the news and there is talk of an inquiry.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/11/2020 16:42

Religious Easter celebrations were cancelled
Church services were cancelled. Religious observance in your home wasn't. You can celebrate the resurrection of Christ without a building or a member of staff. Same with Christmas.

ancientgran · 05/11/2020 16:42

The Poundland Churchill will talk utter shite again about the risk of the NHS being overwhelmed and how we can all have a relatively normal Christmas because, you know, we're all in this together I'm not sure that is fair to Poundland, they sell some useful stuff.

the80sweregreat · 05/11/2020 16:48

Boris Johnson isn't even as useful as the ' Lidl middle aisle' and they sometimes sell utter crap people really don't need.

Fawnfour · 05/11/2020 16:53

🤣🤣🤣
Ridiculous
Yes listen to him for God's sake

TibetanTerrier · 05/11/2020 16:55

@RubyViolet

It’s so he can look in charge and disappear to Chequers for the long weekend, he’ll be in the car to the country at 6.05pm and back at Downing Street on Tuesday morning.
He'll be at the Cenotaph on Sunday for the Remembrance Service. No march past this year, but the service is being held as a closed ceremony.
