"Boris Johnson is holding a press conference with Sir Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, at 5pm, No 10 has announced."

What do we think he’s going to say? I’m a bit worried about what he might say.

But I can pretty much guarantee he won’t be on time at 5pm, I’m guessing more like 6!

OP posts:

@Splodgetastic

I thought Chevening was for the Foreign Secretary?
Isn't it a goats cheese?
Splodgetastic · 05/11/2020 15:07

@CovidClara Maybe it is as well! I love goat’s cheese and now I am thinking about cheese mmmm

Clutterbugsmum · 05/11/2020 15:09

Hopefully he be on time.

But as others have said lots of waffle and no information.
And graph you can’t read

Overthegardenfence · 05/11/2020 15:14

I’m not sure I’ve seen him driving there I think he decides who should live here so maybe he uses part of it.

StealthPolarBear · 05/11/2020 15:14

In seriousness I think it won't be anything new.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/11/2020 15:15

What do we think he’s going to say?

He's going to announce the dates for Dominic Cummings' Lockdown 2 Tour. First stop, Barnard Castle - book your tickets now!

Ormally · 05/11/2020 15:15

@CovidClara

Never, in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few. The NHS saved my life and did you know that I am now so broke that my last child was born in an NHS hospital- amazing- who knew that you didn't have to pay to give birth.

We will fight them in the car parks of Costco, The Range and Home Bargains. We will fight them in the RHS gardens and the garden centres of England. Stay at home unless you need to go out. If you have to go out take care and be safe. Above all support the economy and go to B&M but don't you dare set foot in a gym or a pub.

It is simple.

No, this time around, surely you mean "...has so much been owed by so few to so many?"
kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 15:16

@Splodgetastic

I reckon Christmas cancelled and lockdown until March, given the furlough announcement.
Nope. Can't do this till March. He said 4 weeks.
LadyLindaT · 05/11/2020 15:18

Was anyone else shouting "For God's sake use a clicker!"?

kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 15:19

Vaccine news, maybe?

Genevieva · 05/11/2020 15:22

He is a coward. He will be trying to justify the biggest theft of civil liberty in our history, including powers to let 'any relevant person' use force against civilians who are deemed to be breaking lockdown. But 'reasonable person' is not in the list of terms so it is not clear who a reasonable person is. What we can be sure of though is that it is broader than just the police.

Yesterday Theresa May looked like a statesman. She was articulate and persuasive. But he didn't listen. He scuttled out of the chamber as soon as she stood to speak. He has reached a new low in my estimation. The Conservatives better have a coup before the next election because he is unelectable.

Please, if you haven't, listen to Dr Michael Yeadon. Please look into the stats that show that hospital admissions for respiratory infections are within the normal range despite the addition of another endemic coronavirus. The deaths that are higher than usual are:

  • cancer patients aged 45-65
  • suicides
  • domestic violence -related
  • stillbirths
BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2020 15:26

@LadyLindaT

Was anyone else shouting "For God's sake use a clicker!"?
I know. It's like the BBC News Channel on one of the late night shows. Presenter stands next to a big touchscreen and every time he wants to move to the next screen he has to touch the screen with his hand, which requires turning his back to the camera.

In neither case is it especially revolutionary technology. At my work we're always the last to get anything like this and we've had these for years. I would have thought that they could even cope with this with the three podiums (podia?) as the big screen they show will have multiple USB ports.

Maybe Boris and co are too ham fisted with the clickers and they'll be always accidentally fast forwarding and then not knowing what button to press to get it back so they need a competent adult in control of slide advancement?

MrsMariaReynolds · 05/11/2020 15:28

How the hell long is this lockdown going to last if furlough is being extended to March?!?

CovidClara · 05/11/2020 15:30

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Prince Charles and Prince William are doing the same but helicopter tours. They are offering London, Norfolk, Scotland and Cornwall on their Covid tour of the UK.

Spaces are strictly limited.

kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 15:31

@MrsMariaReynolds

4 weeks as we were told.
SleepingStandingUp · 05/11/2020 15:32

@MrsMariaReynolds

It'll cover for a Feb half term lockdown
ForTheLoveOfSleep · 05/11/2020 15:35

The r-rate is 1.1 - 1.5 over the regions so Nightingale hospitals have been told to open/reopen ASAP so there is that to talk about. Maybe they will also announce the successful vaccine that they are to start rolling out to NHS staff in December and to the general public in January.

WindChimeTinkle · 05/11/2020 15:38

I had a very vivid dream last need that the vaccine was ready. Sadly I woke up to reality.Sad

ListeningQuietly · 05/11/2020 15:41

He's been watching V for Vendetta and wants an excuse to not be in the House of Commons tonight at dusk?

Blobby10 · 05/11/2020 15:47

Is that normal people's 5pm or BoJo's 5pm?! Grin

Viv0321 · 05/11/2020 15:49

Wales’ restrictions have been lifted so it shouldn’t go on longer than 2nd December

Fizbosshoes · 05/11/2020 15:56

I might wait for the Matt Lucas version.

Btw the £1000 bonus was for employees earning above a certain amount so not all employees would be eligible.

Splodgetastic · 05/11/2020 16:05

I suppose the furlough extension might be just to give confidence to workers, but I’m not sure it will have that effect, and it could be because they now foresee the need for lockdown until March. The first one was stated to be only three weeks and it was only the clinically extremely vulnerable who were told it would be twelve weeks.

secretrugbyfan · 05/11/2020 16:06

BJ cannot win.....either he speaks too much or doesn't speak at all!!!

One thing is for sure....if the lockdown extends beyond Christmas there will only be one lot responsible...the people who cannot follow the rules !!
It's not the fault of the government....I wouldn't have their job for all the money there is and they have made some mistakes, because, let's face it, covid was, and still is to a degree, an unknown entity.

It's a fine balancing act between the economy and lockdown, and one which (IMO) has been managed well so far, but it's the PEOPLE that have f**ked up here. Those that flout the rules, having all these bloody parties and not observing social distancing when they should be.

I'm neither pro or anti-Johnson but cut the bloke some slack, adhere to the rules and try to get the numbers down so that Christmas isn't written off.

If we don't, it will be the people's fault, not the government.

The guidance is quite clear and easy to understand....if you have to ask 'Can I do this/that etc?' just don't do it. Stop trying to work round the rules!!!

kittensarecute · 05/11/2020 16:11

Everyone needs to stop talking about the lockdown being extended, it will seriously affect my mental health if it is. We were told 4 weeks, people!!
