Nor any of the other shops unfairly dodging the lockdown closure by claiming they are essential (someone on another thread's, local shoe shop, local branch of Next) etc.

It's bloody ridiculous. The more we are out and about, the more this virus has a chance to keep spreading. Don't click and collect from your local business, place orders online from them or phone up and arrange delivery.

Just stop f**king going out. If you don't HAVE to go out for work, essential shopping - ie food or medicine, just stay at home.

If you don't, don't moan when bloody Boris is on our screens on 2nd December saying the lockdown is extended.

Oh go fuck yourself. That's one thing you can definitely do and not catch Covid.

Littlebelina · 07/11/2020 17:01

@Vintagevixen

If you're going to get angry OP get angry for the following reasons:
  1. The government that outsourced test and trace to their mates, resulting in a failing system.
  1. The government that insisted on discharging the very vulnerable they were supposed to protect back to care homes to infect more vulnerable people they were supposed to protect.
  1. The government that is trying to repeat step 2 at present, with plans to discharge care home residents back again into so called Covid zones in care homes - which wont work (see point 5.)
  1. The government that has consistently underfunded the NHS and in particular critical care (I know as am an ICU nurse) beds over many years, reducing the capacity to cope EVERY winter.
  1. The government that got rid of bursaries for nurse training, hence contributing to the shortage of nurses, the same nurses and HCP's who are supposed to look after Covid patients and/or staff these so called Covid zones in care homes and critical care beds.
  1. The government who had no plan for when students returned to uni in September even though they had been pre warned that this was likely to be a super spreading event.
  1. The government who cant even wait to see if tier 1 - 3 restrictions work, who can't interpret figures or take advice from more than a narrow range of scientists, won't release relevant info for scrutiny but just rush us into a second lockdown, seem to believe in Neil Ferguson to the exclusion of all despite the fact he got death predictions wrong on foot and mouth, swine flu and others. Wont even do a simple analysis on the costs of lockdown (including non Covid excess deaths).

But instead you're getting angry at people going to the Range, keeping social distance and taking precautions, and blaming them?!

👏👏👏👏 this

Where in the North is Boyes? Can't remember them

sorryforswearing · 07/11/2020 17:06

Government should get a grip and close these shops.

TurquoiseDragon · 07/11/2020 17:07

Boyes is now as far south as the Midlands, we've had one in our town for a few years.

ancientgran · 07/11/2020 17:12

@sorryforswearing which shops? Just The Range? I'm really glad my plumber was able to get something he needed from The Range to fix my leak, do you expect me to live without water for a month or to just let the leak flood the house?

Lemons1571 · 07/11/2020 17:19

I’ve never been in a Range or a B&M Blush I imagine them to be a cross between Hobbycraft and Dunelm Mill?

The Range is yes, but B & M is more of a cross between Woolworths, Wilkinson’s & Dunelm Mill but cheaper. (I get all my branded toiletries & cleaning stuff from there plus things like crisps, biscuits, chocolate etc)
PinkPiranha11 · 07/11/2020 17:36

Love this thread. Hasn’t quite worked out how the OP hoped has it 😂😂. We’re all just swapping tips as to the best bargain shops and now planning various outings!

@OverTheRainbow88

What has covid done to people?!!!!!!!

Turned people against each other, feel like they can police each other; tell each other what they is essential to buy.

OP please take a look at yourself and most importantly relax.

So true.

So more people can have no income? You do realise that if the owners of these shops aren't on the government furlough scheme then they're staff don't get paid if they close?
WanderlustWitch · 07/11/2020 18:04

*their not they're - sometimes my phone hates me when I'm trying to make a point 😓

You should have waited until after lockdown and done your bit for the greater good!

Nocto · 07/11/2020 18:46

@PurpleDaisies

I’ve been disappointed with Wilkinson’s lately. B and M has overtaken them as my cheapo shop of choice.
Well... it's a good day out if you can do both. I did B and M, Home Bargains and Wilko all in one trip today, and didn't buy much in any of them because Lockdown has made me redundant and I have no money, so mooching around shops is the only thing I can now do to entertain myself.

Agree with PP who have mentioned Boyes. Oh yes. I went there yesterday and bought some essential blister plasters for 99p. I haven't got a blister, but I'm bound to have one at some point.

Dowser · 07/11/2020 19:15

Glad to see Boyes are open as they closed during first lockdown
My locals are Billingham , Northallerton , york but there’s loads in N Yorks

Went to the range today , looking for plastic tubs as a bastard if mouse had been munching on our packs of muesli.

It was mental in there and utter carnage in home bargains next door..this was 4pm on a very chilly afternoon nd the car parks were rammed.

I’m liking this lockdown so much better than the last one.

This one of far more joyous and cheerful for starters.

However compared to London’s lockdown, we are non starters.
Wished I lived nearer, this looks like a great afternoon out

Zoflorabore · 07/11/2020 19:55

I love my shopping Wink and have never heard of Boyes. Am in the North West, just outside Liverpool.

What am I missing?

Rabbitholebonkers · 07/11/2020 20:28

Heads up if anyone is struggling for Christmas presents for the little ones. B&M is selling numerous plastic junk items that your kids will love, 2 for 20 pounds. Absolute bargain.

Chuck in a couple of scented candles, some crisps, and a fluffy towel and you’re good to go!

Lmao at the previous poster who bought some blister plasters because she’s bound to have one at some point Grin.

NullcovoidNovember · 07/11/2020 20:51

Well not the range but roads were utterly chokka near me today! We went to local woods and I've never ever seen it soo busy!
. Utterly chokka block. Heaving.. Huge groups everywhere, no sd at all on paths!.. I've never in 15 years experienced anything like it. Maybe our local range has shut?..

I'm working as usual, dc are in school... I'm linked to hundreds and hundreds every day, doesn't feel like a lock down at all to me.

Nocto · 07/11/2020 21:07

Oh... I can only extend my sympathies.

I used to live in Liverpool, btw, which is where I first discovered Home and Bargains (and Kwik Save, and another supermarket whose name now eludes me).

Boyes has all sorts of stuff. Toothpaste, decorating bits, blister plasters, "homewares", buttons, thread, terrible flammable underwear. You name it, Boyes sells it.

It's a complete treasure trove.

Think you might be making the OP's point for her there...
I totally agree that getting out now and then is therapeutic and is essential for some...but the scene you've described is surely showing contempt for lockdown and the concept of saving people lives.

It’s funny that, because I think I’ve clearly described that if it wasn’t for this ridiculous lockdown, the people that were rammed into the two stores I visited on a cold, foggy late autumn afternoon might just have been more evenly distributed around the town, in the shopping centre, which my dd tells me was quiet ( because most of the shops are closed) , sat in McDonald’s restaurant...or several others around the town, in the cinema, where there were several family films on offer before lockdown, at the local bingo hall, soft play, trampoline , swimming etc

But no, people desperate to get out and about because it wasn’t really nice enough to go walking ..all headed to the same places.

If you think there’s contempt for lockdown, I’m inclined to agree with you.

The reason being numbers were already coming down as shown on the map that was printed just after November 1st

Of course not but the Range isn’t the most obvious go to place for plumbing supplies. People are less likely to go for a trip out or stay and browse at a plumbers merchant. A previous poster has described what it is like in these home decor shops. We need to do everything we can to stop crowds gathering for extended periods or this ‘lockdown’ definitely won’t succeed although I doubt it will anyway.
