Not really a lockdown is it?

I'm confused, thought it was a repeat of March apart from schools but then I hear garden centres are remaining open and open gardens like RHS etc. Surely these are non essential journeys? I can see why they are open but not really a proper lockdown is it?

They need as much of the economy to function as possible.

I view it that anything that is enjoyable and makes life worth living is banned but the other stuff isn't.

Lockdown Light

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/11/2020 19:17

Boris said it wasn't a lockdown like we had in March. If they shut everything again the economy will tank even more.

MummaPI · 03/11/2020 19:18

Yes I agree, it seems the people with businesses classed as non essential have spent so much money making their business safe, only to be closed. Doesnt seem fair. Plus they are saying we need to do this for the sake of the numbers but surely it won't be enough and will drag on?

Everything crowded, indoor or close contact and non-essential is closed. Outdoors has lower transmission, there is no reason to stop someone going into a quiet outdoor space. The rules changed based on information known about likelihood of catching the virus, while keeping the economy open where possible.

DenimDrift · 03/11/2020 19:19

Dobbies garden centre has a small sainsbury's in it

MummaPI · 03/11/2020 19:21

So the general doom and gloom of a lockdown isn't quite as bad as before then! I'm a teaching assistant so nothing changes for me, just good old hand gel and open doors to keep me safe Wink

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 19:22

'Stay Home' is the message apparently. But then apparently trips to the Garden Centre can be good for wellbeing/mental health.
Outdoors/exercise=good. Shopping for non essential items=bad.

Qasd · 03/11/2020 19:25

I suppose it feels proper to those of us with friends and families we care about and want to see and yet having my mum sit in my sofa is illegal but if it feels like normal life to you crack on!

Tallalisa · 03/11/2020 19:27

Define a lockdown.

It's just a made up name for closing things. A ridiculous one at that.

Peppafrig · 03/11/2020 19:31

Yeah nothing will really change for me .Will still be working , doing schools runs. Shopping as normal. I didn’t eat out or go to the pub anyway. I won’t visit family but we all don’t live near to each other anyway.

Stay Home

Makes my teeth itch.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 19:36

I think the closing of pubs/restaurants/cafes makes sense (although terrible for the hospitality industry) as they are places people congregate and sit close with no masks.
Also not going in and out of other people's houses makes sense.

Not sure about kids sports. Mine are all grown up, but I assume they are still doing sports at school? Problem with junior football etc is people cramming into cars and all the parents gathering on the sidelines shouting presumably.

Smelliethenelephant · 03/11/2020 19:40

Totally no logic to these rules. Garden centres OK but you can't have a game of tennis in the park?

Tallalisa · 03/11/2020 19:44

*Pisses me off they have stopped kids’ outdoor sports

So yet again we e sacrificing our kids’ health physical and mental tp protect the elderly and vulnerable*

Yep.

Pathetic, and people wonder why we are a nation of obese

Tfoot75 · 03/11/2020 19:46

I think the closure of non essential shops is madness to be honest, I can't see them not opening in December (as missing December sales would be catastrophic for the high Street) but when they open the pent up pre-Christmas demand will create massive crowds. Very poorly thought out.

The essential journeys only message of last time so as to avoid emergency services pressure turned out to be complete nonsense, as the NHS was never particularly pressured, so spinning that one now is not going to be taken seriously. Perhaps when/if A&E is actually full we might not drive to exercise in case of a freak accident HmmConfused

What a charmer.

The Others matter.

And - guess what. The Vulnerable includes children. Lower risk than adults - but what a message to give these poor disabled kids...the attitude towards the disabled aka The Vulnerable.

Oh - and lots of children have vulnerable parents. Losing a parent has a dreadful mental health impact on children.

Meanwhile young healthy children don't need organised sports in order to exercise.
Indeed many kids hate them and prefer the more relaxed unpressured type of exercise that is walking.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 19:47

Are children not doing school sport either? They could still go for a walk/run or a bike ride etc at the weekend. They shouldn't get obese in 4 weeks.

CoronaIsWatching · 03/11/2020 19:51

Nothing's going to change for me apart from non-essential shops shutting

Personally I'd like to protect our under pressure traumatised doctors and nurses and other health and social care workers. School staff and all other frontline workers too.

Then there's Long Covid. It's affected many younger previously healthy people. They often had an initial mild case with no need for hospitalisation.

Get Long Covid and you might find yourself becoming one of The Vulnerable.

mrscampbellblackagain · 03/11/2020 19:54

The children's sports thing is annoying. Since my DC re-started club hockey this term there have been very strict rules about no spectating and in fact parents are not allowed out of their cars so pretty low risk.

Well it would be if people could follow the rules but that seems very very hard for some people.

Cuddling57 · 03/11/2020 19:54

I don't understand the garden centres. Stay home, only go out for essentials. How is a garden centre essential?
Are any of you involved in kids sport? I can see both sides of the argument but kids football involves a lot of households mixing from different schools which can spread the virus. Not involved with other sports so can't comment on them but I can see how they have decided on a blanket ban.

freddosfrogs · 03/11/2020 19:55

Yet I can't play tennis despite being socially distanced by default. I can go to the garden centre and whisper sweet nothings to an illicit companion though
bigbluebus · 03/11/2020 19:55

A number of non essential independent stores in my local towns are doing click and collect - something else which is new this time.
