Not really a lockdown is it?

I'm confused, thought it was a repeat of March apart from schools but then I hear garden centres are remaining open and open gardens like RHS etc. Surely these are non essential journeys? I can see why they are open but not really a proper lockdown is it?

@Sparklingbrook

Are children not doing school sport either? They could still go for a walk/run or a bike ride etc at the weekend. They shouldn't get obese in 4 weeks.
This.

Remember too that lots of kids hate school PE. My cousin was one of them.
Despite this he was always a very fit and healthy kid - because our families walked. A lot. All seasons.

They could but if that's not their sport then they are suffering. DS and I play tennis together the courts are going to be closed. He plays tennis with his friend several times a week but now can't do that, it's how they relax from the stresses of GCSEs.

To answer your question OP.
No it's not a proper lockdown. Not least because we're going to continue to import Covid. The ban on unessential travel only applies to outbound travel...

mrscampbellblackagain · 03/11/2020 19:58

There was a good article in the telegraph today about the importance of physical exercise for children. Many schools do no offer anywhere enough PE/Games.

My DC are very lucky as attend a school where sport is a priority but they have spacious grounds etc. Not all schools are the same.

SundayReilly · 03/11/2020 20:01

Are dentists closing this time?

MissClarke86 · 03/11/2020 20:02

By law schools should offer 2 hours of physical activity a week.

Anymore than that and something else has to drop - less reading, less maths, no art. As a teacher, I think it’s enough and a good balance. They don’t need to be doing organised sport to be active. I’m glad they still get PE in school though, and it makes the cancelling off outside sports a little easier for them.

The collection point for operation Xmas child boxes in my area is a non-essential shop. They might be able to still take the boxes but it's a maybe and we'll find out soon. I'll be so upset if I won't be able to give a box, those poor children Sad

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/11/2020 20:04

just good old hand gel and open doors to keep me safe
I also work in a school. I'll be curled in a corner with advanced hypothermia by the time this all over.

DenimDrift · 03/11/2020 20:09

garden centres can sell food
home bargains sells food

@SundayReilly

Nope.
Emmie12345 · 03/11/2020 20:10

Dentists are open

My son plays a lot of academy rugby- it’s not replaceable with 2 hours of school sports

why is operation christmas child still going!??
DrizzleandDamp · 03/11/2020 20:11

They can’t close garden centres, last time was a massive mistake, plants don’t just stop growing and they ended up throwing away a load of bedding stock etc. If they do that to the growers again they won’t re-open simple as that. Same really as essential food chains, while garden centres aren’t “essential” for consumers, actually fresh chains can’t just stop or they fall over.

Emmie12345 · 03/11/2020 20:12

And yes it’s a huge relaxation from gcse for year 11 as someone says on the thread

NannyGythaOgg · 03/11/2020 20:12

@SheepandCow
You are the 'charmer'

Kids die of flu every year - healthy kids die of flu every year - not a lot but too many. Kids with health issues die of flu every year - again not a lot but more than die of Covid. They also die of other things that can be treated BUT aren't because fucking Covid.

Life/Illness/Death is not just a one trick pony - even if you are.

Long Covid - post viral syndrome - been around forever

Suicide is terminal - far more than Covid is

cantdothisnow1 · 03/11/2020 20:17

There is no logic in banning outdoor sports but keeping the Garden Centres and shops like the Range open.

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 20:18

I agree, it doesn't sound like a 'proper' lockdown nor is it long enough but neither was the last one. However people would complain to high Heaven if they had too many more restrictions, even members of the government are moaning to and about Boris over it.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 03/11/2020 20:19

Is there a new slogan yet?
Stay Home
But Go To School
Don't Take The Piss.

HolidayLetter · 03/11/2020 20:21

From my perspective, it's a lockdown. I am crying as I write this.

I haven't had any income since March. I have teenagers to house and feed.

It might not be a lockdown to some, but it definitely feels like one to me.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 20:22

Dentists are staying open around here. Some still not doing check ups but are there for emergencies and problems and hygienists.
The one I go to has a very good set up, all very safe, and they are PPEd up to the eyeballs.

The range stayed open the last time too. I've not shopped there since before lockdown as I strongly disagreed with their tactics to keep open.
nosswith · 03/11/2020 20:22

It was never a lockdown in March. Though I agree it is a less onerous set of restrictions than between March and June. They would have been even less and for a shorter period if it had begun in late September.

SheepandCow · 03/11/2020 20:24

Yes @NannyGythaOgg
Suicide is indeed terminal. It's often triggered by deep trauma - like PTSD or bereavement.

You'll see the link in my previous post to an article about the ICU nurses who have been sectioned due to the trauma of the first wave.

We've long needed better resourced mental health services. Now there's a newfound widespread public concern, something not seen before the pandemic, perhaps we'll finally see some improvements.

As for Long Covid, you'd better let the world's medical and scientific experts including those at the WHO that you know more than them.

Completmentfille · 03/11/2020 20:26

Yes, you're right, it's definitely not a lockdown. Anything bringing any joy to anyone should be banned as joy is a non essential commodity, the supermarkets should sell only cabbage and gruel, children should be banned from going out and the rest of us should be forced to stay inside with ten foot steel fences erected outside every dwelling.

HolidayLetter · 03/11/2020 20:27

Seems that nobody is reading my posts.

Ah well. We evidently don't count, which says it all.
