Not really a lockdown is it?

I'm confused, thought it was a repeat of March apart from schools but then I hear garden centres are remaining open and open gardens like RHS etc. Surely these are non essential journeys? I can see why they are open but not really a proper lockdown is it?

Dh works in manufacturing, his work place are staying open. I’ve seen a fb post from our local shoe shop (who Had to close last time) are still able to open. So apart from hospitality and sports/clubs, I’m not sure that very much will be Closed.
The biggest loss to most is not meeting up with friends/family. I can manage with no restaurants/pubs/coffee shops, even without shops as long as the internet and postman carry on. But I will struggle without my friends for a month. It’s going to proper shit.

JamminDoughnuts · 03/11/2020 20:28

thanks for the thread.
my national trust visit prebooked can still go ahead Smile
i thought they might stay open. out doors

MrsJBaptiste · 03/11/2020 20:28

@nosswith "It was never a lockdown in March"

Not seeing family & friends, most shops shut, pubs/restaurants closed, streets empty, barely any cars on the roads, WFH... It felt like a lockdown to most people!

myrtilles · 03/11/2020 20:28

Stopping children’s non contact sport is ridiculous. Not sure how people are supposed the practical part of GCSE pe when sport keeps getting closed down and doing sport boosts immunity and lessens obesity and is good for mental health. No evidence sport or non essential shops spread covid. Restricting socialising indoors is what the focus should be on as well as further safety measures for schools. It is also madness that university non academic activities have been shut down as that will just encourage students to depart en masse to parents in lower risk areas.

DenimDrift · 03/11/2020 20:28

the range do sell 'essential items' though

lightbulbs
screwdrivers
pet food
screws/nails
elec sockets
washing machine hoses
padlocks
etc

dingledongle · 03/11/2020 20:29

peppafrig same as me Smile

Kids at school, me working at home as usual 🤷‍♀️

DenimDrift · 03/11/2020 20:30

@HolidayLetter

From my perspective, it's a lockdown. I am crying as I write this.

I haven't had any income since March. I have teenagers to house and feed.

It might not be a lockdown to some, but it definitely feels like one to me.

how have you coped with no income?

I hope this is the right one
I must admit I am getting sick and tired of all the drama about kids sacrificing their health , education, wellbeing, futures for the elderly and vulnerable.
As @SheepandCow said the vulnerable do not necessarily fit the sterotypical frail 82 year old in a care home.
The ECV and vulnerable groups range from kids to the elderly. My middle aged dh is one who has worked throughout. He shielded at the start and me and dc shielded as much as possible.
School is a risk of course but our 3 dds must attend in their bubbles of up to 250 or we will be fined.
So this lockdown imo is all about the kids education and they are being priotised.

I hardly think going to garden centres stops it being a lockdown, it's hardly a rave substitute is it

gingerwhingerwife · 03/11/2020 20:32

The garden centres near me sell about 2% plants in the winter and 98% Christmas decorations and gifts. I wonder if they will be able to continue to have their grottos?

GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea · 03/11/2020 20:32

Try telling my son it isn't a lockdown. His business is now closed again with no income to support his family properly and no savings left.

Temporarything · 03/11/2020 20:32

You know there so much whataboutery going on here. Is what it is. Not all of it makes sense. Just wear a mask and do your best to get on with life. If we all try and comply things might improve.

Emmie12345 · 03/11/2020 20:33

We need to let our kids live their lives in a free and full way

They should be our priority , not those who have lived their lives already

Completmentfille · 03/11/2020 20:34

What about my family who work in arts and theatres who are going to lose their homes? Are they allowed to be upset or is that just drama too?

The only things cancelled for us is our childrens sports. Horse riding (outside and obviously distanced) swimming fair enough as there is 6 in her group. Gymnastics ( completely distanced with temp checks and hand gel after each station)

I know the government can't go through every thing one by one and ok it but its a shame there isn't a common sense approach. I'm really feeling for these small company's and local shops.

@HolidayLetter that must be really hard.

HolidayLetter · 03/11/2020 20:38

10K Hospitality and Leisure grant in April for people who have SBRR.

Absolutely nothing since then.

Normal earnings are around £36k, so are fine for one adult and two teenagers. No other income, having left XH who abused the children.

This year's tax return will show 13k (including the Hospitality grant). All the outgoings on the hol let and my own house remain unchanged. Plus the expense of having the DC at home over lockdown (food, heating, water).

I have coped by using credit cards (MSE recommends cards with 0% interest).

I can't claim benefits as I own the hol let property.

It is unspeakably crap.

As far as I can see the non-essential shops round here have been very carefully stocking a few things so they have now got notices up saying why they're essential. The crafting shop is selling antibacterial wipes, some of the clothing shops sell handgel, and the sweetshop is also stocking some DIY things.
Not sure if they'll get away with it, but they're trying it.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 03/11/2020 20:43

@Completmentfille no of course not. I reslly feel for anyone eho has lost out financially or suffered any ill health or bereavements etc.
I just feel that some people are putting all the blame on the wrong people.
The elderly and those with medical conditions are constantly being told that they should be locked up or stay home temporarily and leave the rest of us to get on with it. Or are blamed for every single measure our pathetic Govt have taken.

They could still go for a walk/run or a bike ride etc at the weekend. They shouldn't get obese in 4 weeks.

It’s not going to be 4 weeks because 4 weeks won’t make enough difference. This will drag on.

And yes- even 4 weeks adds to health problems, especially with kids who have disabilities like CP like my Dd. She needs to keep active and fit or the CP gets worse.

It’s dark by the time they get home. Give us an idea of how to keep active all crammed up in tiny flat after dark.
