Boris JOhnson is in real trouble with this - he is likely to need Labour to get this lockdown started and I imagine there will be discussions over the exit plan. They are hurtling from one idea to the next without ever really seeing what is happening with the plan they chose

There is a reason it is starting on Thursday and not right now - the March lockdown was started under emergency provisions but it was agreed I think that any further ones would be done with the agreement of Parliament not the government.

Plus we are now so far from a UK led agreed approach it is unreal

monkeytennis97 · 02/11/2020 08:57

Yes of course ... 10 million people are mixing more than the last lockdown as schools are open. Schools will limp on until staff:pupil ratios are unsafe. It's a disgrace.

notevenat20 · 02/11/2020 09:03

Isn’t there quite a lot of additional funding ?

A one-off £650 million premium for the 2020/21 academic year to help pupils make up for lost teaching time (DfE, 2020a).

A £350 million National Tutoring Programme (NTP) to provide additional, targeted support for those students who need the most help.

WanderingMilly · 02/11/2020 09:04

Well, I can't see how we're going to get the numbers down quickly enough in 28 days, given the time it took last time....and that was with the schools shut and (at first) other things closed like construction etc.

Repetitive locking down and then opening up (for everyone to infect each other at Christmas) is not the way to go anyway. And the only reason they're really doing this is not for our direct benefit but in order not to overwhelm the NHS; what a shame they hadn't poured all the billions into healthcare long before this started, so that we could deal with things differently.

I suspect they may well shut schools down early in December to protect Christmas and then allow people to meet for Christmas itself. Heaven knows what will happen in 2021.

We will get some vaccine news, good or bad, by then.

But none of that is to help make class sizes smaller, improve ventilation and pay for cleaners.
Brunt0n · 02/11/2020 09:13

Probably until the new year since they’re insisting on keeping schools open. Went past the local primary school today and big groups of parents chatting, no masks, no distancing etc. Glad the economy and everyone’s mental health is being totally fucked to keep that going 👍

mam0918 · 02/11/2020 20:59

@Dinocan

Yes, last time it was 6 weeks wasn’t it? So it will be at least that again I should imagine as we’re expected to see a bigger peak this time.
6 weeks... where you under a rock on mars?

because thats the only reason I can think that your quarantine was so short lol

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/11/2020 21:12

I think it will be pretty much like this until March and maybe then there will be signs of the vaccine.

Can’t see them relaxing at Christmas as January cases would be horrendous and the strain on the NHS too much.

CoffeeAndCake3 · 02/11/2020 22:02

Surely, surely, they can't allow NYE celebrations to go ahead? There's no way to police numbers and it's unfeasible to kick people out of venues early. It would be madness to let new year be a free for all

Christmasfairy2020 · 02/11/2020 22:05

Yup and as soon as students go back to their little villages from the likes of sheffield university halls of residence it will be rife. I personally think once students go home they shouldn't return as uni is online anyways !!!

Beebityboo · 02/11/2020 22:12

I definitely wouldn't return if I was a student in halls. I'm a mature student in my thirties taking all classes online from my house until Easter at the earliest, but it is herartbreaking talking to the 18 year olds all locked up in their rooms like battery hens, missing their parents in unfamiliar surroundings. One even whatsapped me via the group chat to tell me that they were having suicidal thoughts. It's just a horrible horrible situation for these young ones to be in and they should never have gone back. My course has one hour face to face a week, which less than five students go to. Try to manage it responsibly, but let them go home.

Crunchymum · 02/11/2020 23:01

I think we'll have current restrictions until mid December and then schools etc.will be closed down for 4 weeks (so an extra two weeks off for state schools)

Viv0321 · 03/11/2020 00:41

Wales have lifted a lot of their restrictions so maybe England will after the 2nd.

Quaagars · 03/11/2020 00:47

Don't know, and just taking it as it comes.

dangerrabbit · 03/11/2020 00:49

Boris said lockdown is definitely going to stop on 2nd December so I'm thinking lockdown will definitely continue.

I think that most likely we'll see a return of the "rule of six" or similar for the Christmas week. So we can have small gatherings only. Allowing massive NYE parties would be ridiculous but people will still have them, allowed or not.

Yep, you're right. Add to this Gove saying it could be extended and it's a no brainer on what's going to happen.
orangejuicer · 03/11/2020 03:36

@Viv0321

I was going to say that the English govt will have the benefit of seeing Welsh data post firebreak so there is a slim chance of restrictions being lifted in England, however there would likely be another lockdown in January as pp have said.

Not sure who said it but students are not partying under lockdown. Quite the opposite.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 03/11/2020 03:47

If this Government spent as much money on the NHS and reopening all the wards and beds they shut over the last 10 years, like they spent on Furlough etc, we would not need to lockdown in the first place.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 03/11/2020 03:51

Very true, only the University have conned thousands of students paying rent up front for their halls of residence, when they all knew they would be working online.
orangejuicer · 03/11/2020 04:13

Galaxy I think conned is overstating it just a little?

What would people prefer, that unis go under?

Temporarything · 03/11/2020 05:46

I think they would prefer a government support package for universities.

Temporarything · 03/11/2020 05:50

Xmas us such a huge part of retail that I can’t see they won’t open it up a bit in December. Unless cases are soaring maybe.

Bit of relaxation rules for Xmas then back in lockdown in Jan? Who knows.

JacobReesMogadishu · 03/11/2020 06:09

Yes, the govt refused a support package for universities leaving them no choice. They’re businesses at the end of the day and the govt left them high and dry when supporting all other businesses. Universities would have gone bust if the students hadn’t come back to pay for halls.....some may still go bust.
