@Jeremyironseverything

How can they consider relaxing rules for Xmas and not other religions festivals? They won't, but at the moment they are dangling Xmas as a carrot to get everyone to comply.
Weight of numbers?

But as China cancelled Chinese New Year, I wouldn't be betting on a restriction free Xmas.

I’m guessing because they won’t be able to police Christmas as so many will break the rules to see family?

Tbh, I’m not too bothered about Christmas, happy to stay at home and not visit family, after all it’s just another day, but I understand that many people live alone and don’t want to be alone for Christmas.

Fedup21 · 02/11/2020 07:47

Definitely.

Had they included school closures in this currently lockdown, then no-I think it would have been ended by then.

NotAKaren · 02/11/2020 07:50

I think there may be some easing with perhaps everyone going to Tier 3 - non essential retail open but still not pubs, restaurants and no households mixing. They need to have a plan now for Christmas so people can make plans and mentally prepare for different scenarios. Also now plan is needed now for the return of uni students.

Usernamealreadyexists · 02/11/2020 07:50

Yep with school closures in the next announcement.

Lavenderseas · 02/11/2020 07:51

It will only carry on if people don't stick to the rules.

Schools and hospitals need to stay open, so we need to lockdown other areas until numbers come down.

So please stick to the rules.

Lavenderseas · 02/11/2020 07:55

Yep with school closures in the next announcement.

The Government (along with the German, Irish, French etc Governments) understand the importance of keeping education open. They understand the short and long term costs and implications of closing schools. So I don't think that will happen.

But we may well need a longer lockdown, in order to keep hospitals and schools open.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2020 07:58

Obviously it will.

tortoiseshell1985 · 02/11/2020 08:00

Definitely

Hesnotlocal · 02/11/2020 08:03

I suspect schools will be closed at some point- either mid-November for a couple of weeks (at least) or start of December as a pp has suggested. Then an extension to the lockdown (or maybe Boris will save face and say that the 'tier 4' lockdown has indeed ended on 2 December but we have a new 'tier 5' lockdown including schools as well. Then a week of reduced restrictions over Xmas and New Year (if last time is anything to go on, probably with encouragement for everyone to go to the pub etc then acting surprised that the R rate increases in Jan)

Not just because of spreading in schools but the fact that (at least where I live) it seems that with schools open employers are expecting staff to be in work rather than wfh so there's also more contact going on in work places than the last lockdown.

Jroseforever · 02/11/2020 08:05

Bloody hope not

Hair cut and nails booked for the 3rd!

notevenat20 · 02/11/2020 08:06

That depends entirely on us of course. If we all follow the rules carefully then the lockdown will end on 2 December. If not, it will last longer.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2020 08:06

I'd make alternative arrangements. We are too delicate to be told the truth apparently.
For a party that cares about small businesses, they have a funny way of showing it.
Truth allows business planning. Silly staffed out leaks is what school boys do.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2020 08:07

@notevenat20 , people were , on the whole following the rules in Tier 2 and tier 3. Made fuck all difference. Don't kid yourself.

That is a very good point. Also university students are going to carry on partying throughout lock down.

We all know how the virus spreads. It’s not by magic.

Actually it looks like tier 3 has had an effect if you look at the figures. The problem is that it’s not a big enough effect.

scentedgeranium · 02/11/2020 08:10

I think it will. Because I have a hair apt on 8 December and that's bound to be cancelled!

DeadButDelicious · 02/11/2020 08:12

I fully expect it to carry on past the 2nd. Then Boris will swoop in and be the 'savior of Christmas' giving us a short reprieve where we can meet indoors and then it will carry on till at least February.

BlueBrian · 02/11/2020 08:21

Current headline in the Torygraph:
Boris Johnson raises prospect of lockdown extension

Absolutely no chance of lockdown being finished on 2nd Dec, and they know it.

user1497207191 · 02/11/2020 08:22

Yep. First lockdown was a lot stricter and took 3 months to get the numbers low.

The bigger problem is people ignoring the rules/guidance.

@Classicbrunette

I don’t think Boris will want to be remembered as the pm who ruined Christmas. So it’ll be a normal Christmas and then the Intermittant lock downs carryon all around it. Stupid IMO. We should shut down for Xmas and into the new year. The whole thing is a farce. Don’t get me started 😡
Yes to all of this. They are not prepared to take the tough or even unpopular decisions needed. Individuals too often want to meet their immediate needs, and can not make the sort of choices that are rational in order to achieve longer term goals. Food choices are a good example of this.

So, people will want to see extended family on the 25th and 26th, and because its the 25th and 26th will no doubt play down the risks to justify meeting their immediate desire to see family. Sometimes someone else has to make the seemingly very tough decision to say its not without risk. If lockdown continues over Christmas some will break the rules, some will follow the rules even though without the rules they would have chosen to mix households. With no rules, by January we will be back where we are now, except for some people it won't be data, or death rates troubling them, but maybe regret, and that would be painful.

As for shops and Christmas shopping, Bojo doesn't really give a shit. Every form of support put in place has been about the wider economy, in particular larger businesses, capital investment, investors, land prices, house prices, foreign investment, shareholders, and banking. I looked yesterday at the support for self employment,......nearly choked. Absolutely disgraceful.

Furlough has been misused by many larger businesses. Larger businesses were planning on taking government money to then pay shareholders and CEOs massive pay outs.

Does Bojo care if your small independent business goes, when Bezos can leap into action and deliver Christmas to your door......

Callcat · 02/11/2020 08:35

This lockdown ends this week. There will be further restrictions following, for sure.

Qasd · 02/11/2020 08:45

Yes pretty much inevitable given the fact gove pretty said that last than 24 hours after the initial announcement

Fedup21 · 02/11/2020 08:48

Hmm, but a lot of these other countries people holding up as valuing schools enough to keep them open, also value them enough to give them extra funding so they aren't actually terribly comparable to ours.

If we keep ours open, as before, without an extra penny-it’s likely things here will be very different
