@Summerfreeze

Then again if you are the sort of person who buys a second home in a rural area, making housing unattainable for the local community, then you are a selfish arse anyway.

As I suspected, a lot of this is about people with chips on their shoulders about second home owners, who don’t really understand how these things work. Me buying a house didn’t make the rest of them unattainable for other people. Just bought a house same as everyone else.

We used local builders, plasterer, plumber, etc. We ate in the local pubs and cafes. Bought stuff on the market.

All to do up a derelict cottage that had been on the market ages.

I wonder if the locals thought that selfish.

Summerfreeze · 01/11/2020 13:23

FWIW it was people using what they thought was "common sense", based on their previous experience and ignoring the rules that led to, amongst other things, the Challenger accident...

Anyhow enjoy your outings to your second home....

I’m really sorry for people that have more faith in this government than in their own common sense.

I will enjoy my time at my house, thank you. Pretty sure it won’t lead to any catastrophic accidents in space.

You all enjoy your rule-sanctioned haircuts and eyebrow appointments and meals out and gatherings with friends. Whatever you think of my actions, it’s just a fact that your legal actions will cause more infections. Which is what we should really be worrying about.

Aridane · 01/11/2020 13:23

The problem with "this" government is they very effectively sanctioned "Normalisation of Deviance" from their own rules by not sanctioning Cummings.....

I think it’s difficult to over estimate the impact of Cummings in so many ways

Splodgetastic · 01/11/2020 13:32

People go away in November to fit around other deadlines and because it is not school holidays and, as we know, only people with children are allowed to have those off.

If my friends can comply with the legislation you dismiss and @OverTheRainbow88 has now reassessed the situation in the light of recent developments it's pretty appalling that you can't in my opinion.

So,you buying a house where you don't live didn't take one house away from local people who want to buy in their home location? It didn't reduce the number of houses available for local people to actually live their lives in? 🤦🏻‍♀️ OK... 🙄 It's not that difficult to grasp - do you really not understand how supply and demand works?

And no, my thoughts about people trotting off to a second house (it's not a home) has nothing to do with a chip on my shoulder.

I really don’t care about your opinion. I care about reducing Covid and I live my life in a way that helps towards that goal.

Given that you don’t know anything about the area my second home is in, including about the demand for housing or how many sit empty, your opinion is irrelevant.

And no, my thoughts about people trotting off to a second house (it's not a home) has nothing to do with a chip on my shoulder.

Your use of ‘trotting off’ and ‘it’s not a home’ make your chip clearer than ever.

Agreed. It takes away a house from local housing, leaving it empty for most of the year. Meanwhile prices rise and there's nothing to rent for people who actually want to live there. They always bring out the 'jealous' card too - that old chestnut. If they haven't got it in 12 pages of people telling them that their lockdown breaking behaviour is selfish and disrespectful they never will. They're a lost cause.

No I didn't expect you to care about the opinion of someone who disagrees with you. You've been at pains to demonstrate that throughout the thread.

If you're planning to break the law and have no qualms about doing so you have no right whatsoever to sneer at other people performing activities which are lawful when they take place.

KiposWonderbeasts · 01/11/2020 13:47

It's people like @Summerfreeze that cause this situation in the first place - their "that bit doesn't apply to me" attitude to civic duty.

It's an international health crisis. Stay put, do your bit.

Summerfreeze · 01/11/2020 13:52

It really isn’t. I’m at the opposite end of the spectrum from the illegal ravers. In the middle of the spectrum are the rule following spreaders. At my isolated end I drive to and from two isolated properties and nothing else.

People mixing and feeling virtuous because it’s a legal group of 6 from 6 households in a legal pub are way more problematic.

Summerfreeze · 01/11/2020 13:56

I’m not sneering at anyone just pointing out what’s more risky.

AnotherSlice · 01/11/2020 13:57

Summerfreeze

Your use of ‘trotting off’ and ‘it’s not a home’ make your chip clearer than ever.

As an observer of this conversation, it really doesn't.

Deal with the discussion, not ad honinem attacks, which tend to make you look defensive.

Be careful: The parish council where my ILs live are preparing to report second-homers who arrive. And the police will be patrolling (nothing better to do where they are, so not an empty threat).

Summerfreeze · 01/11/2020 13:58

Stepping out now as this is getting repetitive. I am confident that my choices haven’t and won’t put anyone else at risk and that’s all that matters to me.

You have consistently sneered at the legislation and people performing activities that were lawful at the time but of which you disapprove.

You have no justification for breaking the law.

Yes I'm not surprised you're stepping away having failed to justify your law breaking and your conviction that the law doesn't apply to you.
Toothsil · 01/11/2020 14:02

@Yorkie127

It's really really clear. No holidays - second home or no second home! Slightly gutted about having to cancel ours but hey ho, we will survive!
Exactly!! We've cancelled two UK holidays this year but we've all got to do our bit, or there's no point to any of this if some people are still just going to move around the country, possibly taking the virus with them.

And you're right, the rules are crystal clear.

AnotherSlice · 01/11/2020 14:28

Sumerfreeze - I actually agree that, based on your account of your life this year, your COVID-Risk Footprint is very light.

But the point of rules and laws is that sadly people can't be expected to rely on the conscience and conduct of others. And what you are saying is "I know I am right, and I have no need to abide by the rules that guarantee for other people that I am right".

friendlycat · 01/11/2020 14:42

The thing is there really is no point in arguing with people like SummerFreeze as I previously said they think they are “special” and the rules and restrictions simply don’t apply to them.

They will twist and turn to suit themselves as shown by all their comments. It would be interesting to be a local neighbour at her second home location where she is part of “the community” due to her paying council tax on her second home. They may well not be as welcoming to their community spirited neighbour this time round. But presumably SF won’t care much anyway.

She'll presumably care if she gets reported.
Toothsil · 01/11/2020 15:26

@TiddyTid

That's one hell of an assumption. Some of us with second homes have worked for 40 years in public services, are perfectly able to assess risks and live a quiet life they have earned through sheer hard work

Good for you. You're still not welcome if you're thinking of joining a Tier 1 area with limited medical infrastructure.

Yes, in our area we don't even have enough hospital capacity for locals without being taken over an hour to a bigger hospital.
justgeton · 01/11/2020 16:58

I absolutely agree. First sign of trouble I'd be home in just over an hour.

Same as if I had toothache

Jungfraujoch · 01/11/2020 17:07

OMG why don’t people just read the advice and information on the government website?! It’s really not hard to understand.

It clearly states no travelling to second homes. What bit of that is not clear for fuck’s sake.

And those of you that are going to go against that what happens if you. break down or have an accident on the way to your second home? You’d be putting a number of other people at risk that’s what!

Hands, face, space and common sense!! Not this, self absorbed, entitled attitude.

Oh, and before anyone says I’m just jealous - I’m a second home owner too but certainly will not be visiting.

justgeton · 01/11/2020 17:26

The truth of it for me is I'm so torn. I do understand the rules. I haven't broken one yet. I have been really cautious, not been socialising much at all.

But I'm human. I see others doing so much more. If not blatantly flouting rules then doing things just because they can. I have despaired.

We really wouldn't be increasing the risk for anyone if we went, other than as some have said if we crash on the way. Local healthcare isn't an issue.. we'd just come back.

You don't know the whole story of why I'm so keen to go... it's not for a holiday. But the reason doesn't fit in with the rules.

The bottom line is we probably won't. But those of you so keen to judge really shouldn't.
