Leaving the nation hanging around for his words of wisdom is not going to boost his popularity.

My concern is the army being brought in to distribute and administer these tests and ensure self isolation.

Bitbusyattheminute · 31/10/2020 19:51

"So do they have to learn all that before they go on telly?" Dd
"Nope. They just make it up as they go. "
Dd, mind blown.

@Wakemeuuuup

I'm assuming my kids won't be playing their field sports with their teams in Nov (except tomorrow). Am I right?
Sean Ingle of the Guardian just tweeted that regulations for U18 outdoor team sports are still "unclear". As a hockey mum I really hope that they can continue, the club has worked so hard to make it safe. Indoor sports definitely off until December.

I've just rewound and sat through the whole of his speech. The bit about the army was about rapid turnaround tests ('many millions') which people can use themselves with results back in 15 mins. This is what he said regarding the army (typed verbatim):

'Over the next few days, weeks, we plan a steady but massive expansion in the deployment of these quick turnaround tests, applying them in an ever-growing number of situations, from helping women to have their partners with them in labour wards when they're giving birth to testing whole towns and even whole cities. The army has been brought in to work on the logistics and the programme will begin in a matter of days. Working with local communities, local government, public health directors, organisations of all kinds to help people discover whether or not they're infectious and then immediately to get them, to help them to self-isolate and stop the spread of the disease.'

Well thanks for the company wims. I’m off to binge watch West Wing on All4, and pretend we live in an alternate reality where Jeb Bartlett is POTUS. Maybe Hugh Grant is PM (his Love Actually character, not actual Hugh Grant, who I’m on the fence about at best). Ta-ra!

Army have already gone in - so it wasn't an announcement, it was an admission. I think the devil will be in the detail - will the army eventually compel tests, then force isolation?

@SpringerJS - I'm also a hockey mum and I really hope outdoor sports for kids are allowed to continue. England Hockey have been brilliant at issuing guidelines for clubs to run safely and our club has worked really hard to implement them too. All the doctors I meet are keen for outdoor kids' sports to continue even in lockdown.

I agree, EH have been fantastic. Hockey has been a lifesaver for my two throughout. I have so appreciated the chance for them to have some normality every week.

My only comment from the whole briefing is that I'll happily buy that sign language bloke a pint. He was ace and did a Sterling job.

BlueStethoscope · 31/10/2020 20:53

Sadly, I can't imagine that kids' extra curricular activities are allowed to continue during lockdown as the new rules state that people are to stay at home. Taking kids to training or music lessons contradicts this. Sad

Even t3 carries an exemption to restrictions for childrens education. Youth groups are definitely an unknown area at present ("i know several people waiting on clarification on whether they can continue to run past Wednesday.

I don't think its a definite no yet for that reason.

JamieLeeCurtains..ditto with my son...and I agree re Kickstart

WhiteChocTwix · 31/10/2020 21:01

@Cwenthryth you and I need to go for drinks! Grin Chris Whitty is still my weird lockdown crush.
Got sausages, potato wedges and beans on the go. Off to drown our sorrows and watch Strictly. Just had an hr on the phone with DM about everything Confused

Getthekettleon2020 · 31/10/2020 21:02

Did BoJo not get the memo. The great British weather has already got us in lockdown. Been rather stormy in the NW today. Sent DH out in car to local shops when the sun made a short appearance.

I'm guessing someone's remembered Remembrance Sunday and firework parties hence the panic for Thursday- do we know if it'll be 9am Thursday or 6pm? Car going for mot Friday or was Confused

Haggisfish · 31/10/2020 21:19

@Enormouscroc I think so as it’s work that can’t be done from home. You should stay as far away as poss and open windows I imagine.

VanGoghsDog · 31/10/2020 21:34

I think it will be 00.01 Thursday.

BlueStethoscope · 31/10/2020 21:46

I really hope you're right @RedToothBrush.

BlueStethoscope · 31/10/2020 21:57

Alas

Some youth services may be able to continue, such as 1-1 youth work and support groups, but most youth clubs and groups will need to cease for this period.

  1. Mortgage survey very likely to be allowed.
  2. My son's long awaited optician app. (he has eye issues) ina week I assume can go ahead - medical).
  3. I read in the news after school clubs would close. I think that is terrible given child minders, nannies, au pairs and nurseries can continue and given we are trying to ensure parents can make a living so we can afford to pay nurses and doctors. However we need to wait until Parliament debates and passes the regulations and then read those before Thursday.
  4. I don't think you are allowed in England to fly abroad on holiday and I presume hotels shut in England even if they are hosting a business meeting (business things usually are allowed to continue) and I presume restaurants and clubs will have to stop serving even business lunches.

Oops - saw the link just above about children's clubs - yes that tallies with what I saw.

Xenia · 01/11/2020 08:44

Actually that link is better news and means my point 3 is WRONG.

"8. Childcare and children’s activities

Parents will still be able to access some registered childcare and other childcare activities (including wraparound care) where reasonably necessary to enable parents to work, or for the purposes of respite care.

Early years settings can remain open. Parents are able to form a childcare bubble with another household for the purposes of informal childcare, where the child is 13 or under. As above, some households will also be able to benefit from being in a support bubble, which allows single adult households to join another household.

Some youth services may be able to continue, such as 1-1 youth work and support groups, but most youth clubs and groups will need to cease for this period."

I don't think a before and after school club for those at primary age would have to close.
