The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

As long as schools are open that’s hundreds of thousands of kids and parents on public transport everyday .

  • its the 'to save christmas' that annoys me!

why?? christmas is ONE day and overrated anyway.....far too much importance placed on some biblical fairy story! sod christmas.....but no, people want tinsel and turkey at all costs!*

It's being reported that it's to avoid a spike in deaths peaking on Christmas Eve, it's to save the Tories from (even more) bad headlines.

kittensarecute · 30/10/2020 23:15

I just hope they keep support bubbles, I can't go a month without seeing my dad.

RedToothBrush · 30/10/2020 23:16

@Mintychoc1

Lockdown is a waste of time. It didn’t work before and it won’t work now.
You assume the purpose of lockdown is about the health crisis alone.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately depending on your views) this isn't just about health care. Its about Johnson's political crisis and how to save his political skin.

Of you work out how much stuuf is done with this in mind it starts to make more sense...

ilovesooty · 30/10/2020 23:16

Something stringent needs to happen but there is no real point to these measures unless schools and universities are closed and they stop people flying in and out of the country.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2020 23:17

"why?? christmas is ONE day and overrated anyway.....far too much importance placed on some biblical fairy story! sod christmas.....but no, people want tinsel and turkey at all costs!*"

People want to see their families, more like.

catchingzzzeds · 30/10/2020 23:17

Boris backed himself into a corner when he stupidly said that schools will remain open. It's clear that schools and universities are driving the spread. Now he can't close them again without losing face.
He's a dick.

Remmy123 · 30/10/2020 23:17

@imjustbxx you are the one sounding stupid.

MiaMarshmallows · 30/10/2020 23:17

The government will present it as 'If we lockdown now, you can all meet for Christmas.' Only for everyone to do just that and set the infection rate soaring again.
People will ignore the rules. Our neighbours have from the beginning and will do the same this time around. This time it will be worse as they will be indoors. If you've got people ignoring the rules then this will carry on for god knows how long. I don't know what the answer is. Confused

RedToothBrush · 30/10/2020 23:17

@ConfusedcomMum

Tanith

He should have done this last week!

What on earth is the point in locking down and not including the schools? An extended half term was the perfect time to do it.

It wasn't implemented this week as Labour had asked for it. Simples. Playground Politics.

Yep. I think theres an element of Johnson not wanting to look weak and obey / copy Stsrmer...

I would agree that these 'leaked' stories from 'government sources' are becoming increasingly accurate, as is the trend of announcing major changes late at night/before the weekend. I'd be surprised if the story isn't pretty close to the truth. Brace yourselves folks.

Pomegranatespompom · 30/10/2020 23:18

People aren’t even sticking to the local restrictions, I’m not sure how they can enforce anything and many people have reasons why they won’t comply - some understandable.

Bridecilla · 30/10/2020 23:18

GCSE November re-sits start next week. Hopefully they'll still happen

Quaagars · 30/10/2020 23:18

Nothing's been said about support bubbles going, so far with all the tiers, even in the most strict ones such as tier 3 you can still keep your support bubble so hopefully the same with any new lockdown too

Universities will be fine teaching online in most subject areas. (not all I know).

The impact on young people's mental health of closing schools will be visiting us for a long long time. The school work is the very least of it.

Absolutely.
Remmy123 · 30/10/2020 23:20

The only way to keep rates low is to keep everything shut and 'stay home .. save lives' until there is a vaccine!

But that ain't happening anything soon is it .. so - we need to live with it. Lockdown does not work!!!

Hospitals were not overwhelmed last time - nightingale had 40 people in it!

Yes, people want a happy few days with their families.
NRJ688 · 30/10/2020 23:22

@imjustbxx whatever

Pomegranatespompom · 30/10/2020 23:22

@Remmy123 some hospitals were overwhelmed.

Abracadabra12345 · 30/10/2020 23:22

@Aragog

They cannot shut schools etc why are everyone on this site wanting this to happen!!! Ffs

I don't think people do want schools to close, but the reality is - if they are open it's not lockdown.

There are still 31+ household mixing in small overcrowded, poorly ventilated rooms with no social distancing. Those children and staff then go home and spend time with their own households.

Regardless of what the media is saying Covid is spreading in schools, even in primary schools. The children, especially the youngest ones, might not be showing symptoms but parents and staff are catching it despite no close contact between them. Children often don't show symptoms so are not being tested very often, especially little ones.

The only place I had close contact, other than with Dh, was school with children. I was being careful as vulnerable but still caught it. I had no close or prolonged contact with any of the other staff. My role means I am not in a bubble as I teach every child. So I ate lunch on my own and I didn't sit in a staff room. Staff meetings took place over zoom away from other staff. The only close contact was with children.

Subsequently we had 10 staff test positive in less than three weeks plus some parents in those classes. Speed across bubbles where staff are distanced. Coincidence?? Parents do not know how many staff are affected, let alone local media.

So the worst happened, you are vulnerable and despite all your best efforts, caught Covid. Has it been as bad as you feared?
TheGinGenie · 30/10/2020 23:22

I don't give a fuck about Christmas but I can't bear the thought of another lockdown. I am so angry at this utterly incompetent government.
