The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

What seems to have made a significant difference in Ireland is a total ban on mixing in homes.

Maybe we need to stricter about this in England?

Everything needs to be done to keep hospitals and schools open.

I hope we see a continued fall in cases among 11-19 year olds, as this seems to be happening recently:

In Wales we cannot get a grip on infections within hospitals which are adding to our deaths hugely

SamsMumsCateracts · 31/10/2020 17:29

@Sonnenscheins

There has been no social distancing adhered to at pick up and drop off at most of the schools I know

Maybe we need staggered start times for different year groups?

Maybe have police around schools to ensure better social distancing?

We have staggered starts and finishes, they all do, but that hasn't stopped most parents hanging around on the paths just outside the school to have a chinwag and catch up with those picking up at different times. All that it's done is created traffic jams on paths as we all try to get round the large groups gathered there.

Why should people be banned from seeing loved ones for an indefinite period of time ?

Feminist10101 · 31/10/2020 17:41

@Versace104

Because the virus needs people moving around to progress through the population...........
Feminist10101 · 31/10/2020 17:41

And “loved ones” often don’t stay at safe distances.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 17:44

I dunno. Perhaps so that other people aren't permanently stopped from seeing their loved ones...because they'd be dead.

In any case, they shouldn't be banned for an indefinite period. We should do one proper lockdown instead.

Xenia · 31/10/2020 17:44

People take different views. Since March I have been against all mandatory measures even if I die.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 17:46

With Ireland. Their borders are shut aren't they?

Wise words from one of the scientific advisers to the Scottish government, Professor Devi Sridhar (my bold):

Oh - to be an island in 2020.

And

On 22 June- given we had largely crushed the curve- we could have maintained this through expanded testing & tracing and strict checks for re-importation of cases. That was the time to push numbers low & have a strategy of how to maintain them.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 17:49

More words of wisdom from Prof Sridhar (again, my bold):

Back in late Feb, a Chinese colleague said that with early action & an elimination strategy (stop transmission within borders), we could be past the worst by June. The UK response was ‘costs are too high.’ We are now into November & 2nd lockdown - cost with this approach?

And

On a panel with several CEOs yesterday and their message was clear -> it's the virus impacting consumer behaviour & their businesses, not just restrictions. Already clear that controlling the virus with a clear strategy is best route to economic recovery.

colouringindoors · 31/10/2020 17:51

bbc just said it will be around 6.30!

colouringindoors · 31/10/2020 17:52

would be interesting to be a fly on the wall...

can only meet One person outside?!

Ferries still running, from Europe, Wales, England, Scotland. So they are not a new zealand type lockdown.

What I don't get is that of course "crushing the curve" was difficult to maintain, given the measures needed to achieve that. Wasn't the initial aim simply to "flatten the curve" rather than crush it? To keep cases at a low level that IS maintainable, rather than reduce to almost nothing only to shoot back up as soon as you reopen?

Professor Devi Sridhar was just on the BBC.

Talking a lot of sense. As usual.

Thankfully you're not in charge. If you were we probably would even have an NHS.
Xenia · 01/11/2020 08:47

I am not against having the NHS. I think it is cheaper than systems in other countries with insurance instead.

Parker231 · 01/11/2020 08:59

Hopefully the only benefit of Covid is that everyone will now realise that the NHS needs much more funding so that it can provide the services we all want and need.

And then they’ll shoot themselves in the face (again) by voting Tory. Hmm
Jroseforever · 01/11/2020 10:23

Will the shops and hairdressers open on the 2nd OR the 3rd?

Versace104 · 01/11/2020 10:25

Probably gonna be extended beyond then :(

Jroseforever · 01/11/2020 10:27

Yes but I’d look to book an app

Parker231 · 01/11/2020 10:29

From Sky News. Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove tells Sophy Ridge on Sunday the government could extend the national lockdown if data shows the infection rate has not fallen enough

speakout · 01/11/2020 10:30

These harsh lockdowsn concern me. People go crazy for a week before they are implimented and as soon as this one ends people will be panic buying again.
Thankfully I don't live in England.
I live in an area with a level 3 lockdown and it works.
Life is bearable, no one is panicking.
