The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

I remember people having a go at me months ago saying why am I complaining, it's only temporary, just for a little while, just a small sacrifice....
Here we are then.

So thankful that schools will be staying open. I am not in support of lockdown in any case but at least locking down everything except for schools will reduce community transmission and therefore fewer cases in schools enabling education to continue with fewer interruptions. Online schooling is no substitute.

Sunflowers246 · 31/10/2020 10:30

Wondered if I should go against this and keep my children at home whilst this virus is extremely bad. At least they'll be safe out of the way of this. They can do school work online

If your child is lucky enough to have the technology and support at home, and if your child of family member is vulnerable, then yes.

But if your child has GCSE or A level exams coming up, if they don't have a laptop at home, if both parents are working (for primary children) and, most importantly, if nobody in your family is vulnerable, no I wouldn't deprive my child from education at school.

That's also assuming that schools will provide an online learning facility if the classrooms are open

@Bambooble

tesco slots booked weekly till end of November

Even if we lockdown, you can still go to supermarkets? Last time a lot of people had slots cancelled whilst they worked out how to prioritise, or because others ordered too many loo rolls to fit on the vans and your orders got bumped.

I know this, last time I didn't get one slot so went shopping throughout. It took ages each time though and meant leaving the kids with dh while he was working. I tried going in evenings but there was less stock. My 8 year old is currently isolating so the slots have been a godsend this week.

Will dentists close? My son has an apt on Tuesday - rearranged from April!!

Also, do we think primary schools will stay open?

Noideawottodo · 31/10/2020 10:34

I've just done a huge Lidl shop. It was packed.

Rukminy · 31/10/2020 10:37

We've got a family funeral at the end of next week that we need to travel a long distance to. I'm worried about what will happen with that.

I wonder if the panic buying has started yet.

Ber84 · 31/10/2020 10:37

We have been in level 5 lockdown for a week now in ireland, not allowed travel more than 5km from home unless its essential travel, I.e food shopping, doc app, schools. This is in place until the 1st of December, it's Halloween break from school at the minute, it was rumoured that they were going to extend this break and keep the children off for another week but I don't think it will happen. Its such a strange time and a lot of dispute to clothes not been essential here, as all retail shops are closed, you can only buy clothes online. Halloween Hmm happy Halloween to all

Feminist10101 yes I know - I'm in Wales. Looks as though England will be going into lockdown just as we are exiting.

fetchmemyparasol · 31/10/2020 10:46

If you oppose a lockdown here is a petition to sign.

Me too.

Everyone saying schools should stay open. I agree but what about school staff and their families?

Lavenderseas · 31/10/2020 10:48

Also, do we think primary schools will stay open?

All schools will stay open.

That's why we're locking down, in order to keep education and health services open.

Lavenderseas · 31/10/2020 10:50

Everyone saying schools should stay open. I agree but what about school staff and their families?

Vulnerable pupils and teachers should be able to stay at home and be supported financially.

In Germany and France schools are staying open during next months lockdown. Not sure how they're dealing with vulnerable people?

GreyishDays · 31/10/2020 10:52

@Feminist10101 On account of Wales, Scotland and NI already being on lockdown.

Scotland isn’t in lockdown. We’ve got tiers. Highest being used is three.

Bemorechair · 31/10/2020 10:54

We’re meant to be moving house. Praying they don’t stop that. It will have such a minimal impact of spread of the virus but huge huge problems for us if our move is delayed.

TheKeatingFive · 31/10/2020 11:00

I agree but what about school staff and their families?

Schools are essential services, like hospitals, police, food production. Lockdown produces a safer environment for schools to operate within.

DBML · 31/10/2020 11:11

How stupid. Well done for wanting to transfer your high risk on to your friends and family! You're soooo clever!

@ivftake1

You’re right. I definitely should go down my option 2 route. Stress leave it is!
That’s one more teacher out for now then - and my tight chest is already feeling a little better just thinking about not going back on Monday.

TheKeatingFive · 31/10/2020 11:17

Does anyone think all European governments are banking on a vaccine being ready end of this month? France, Germany etc it’s all for a month.

Yes. I hope they’re right.

Tanith · 31/10/2020 11:17

"Where is the personal responsibility though? Exercise, essential shopping, school, work and emergencies aside people need to stay at home."

Most people were compliant back in March. The mixed messages and contradictions have all taken their toll.
Then that idiot Cummings flagrantly broke the lockdown rules and nothing happened to him.

"Go out and save businesses!"
So we did.
"Don't go out - you're spreading the virus!"
But didn't you just say...?

OrtamLeevz · 31/10/2020 11:21
@OrtamLeevz I'm sorry to hear about your friend, I hope she turns a corner soon
Thank you, she has pneumonia on top of Covid, it is a waiting game.

Nellodee · 31/10/2020 11:25

Schools are not essential in the short term. We manage without them for 13 weeks of every year. They are vitally important, but not at all on a par with things like bin men, A&E staff, farmers, nuclear power station workers, etc.

MH1111 · 31/10/2020 11:33

Lockdowns don’t work. Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing and expecting a different result?!
We lock down then the virus does what virus’s do - surge back
Then what another lockdown?
What happens when the government can’t afford to pay the public sector in a lockdown and provide furlough. Still happy to lockdown?

TheKeatingFive · 31/10/2020 11:34

They are vitally important, but not at all on a par with things like bin men, A&E staff, farmers, nuclear power station workers, etc.

Children have severely disrupted schooling for most of 2020. Closing again would be ridiculous.

No european country going into lockdown again is closing schools for more than an additional week. Why would England go out on a limb? Especially as early data clearly indicates that it isn’t required to get the numbers down.
