The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

So again, no democracy in another national lockdown, parliament are nowhere to be seen in any of these decisions.

And whilst my mental health suffers to 'protect the nhs' and protect total strangers, I won't have the option to remove my DC from school, and protect my parents, the people who along with my DC mean the most to me in the world.

Schools should remain open. But the useless incompetent arsewipe that is Boris fucked up utterly I'm not allowing people to choose whether to send then back or not.

CeeJay81 · 31/10/2020 07:07

Why couldn't they do it the same time as Wales? National lockdown not English, although there is some overlap I now fear our hard work here will be undone. when Wales opens up on 9th i bet the English who live close to the border try and come here for shopping/pubs etc. They better stay at home.

Should have made it clear- we live with my parents- I can't keep my DC away from them.

Half a lockdown, or set of restrictions, if schools remain open. If you are closing things, universities other than medical degrees perhaps should be online only, and for next term as well. The increase in Covid 19 cases would have been much less if universities had been online this term, and possibly some of the now Tier 3 areas would be tier 2.

HeronLanyon · 31/10/2020 07:09

I realised I am really tired of our model of ‘leadership’ - the need for government spokespersons to say confidently x on day 1 (and we all approach that cynically not believing them) and the drip feed of ‘discussing/planning y’ on day 2 then wild speculation days 3-5, then announcement day 6.
It’s exhausting. Why can’t those who are making decisions say eg ‘it’s fast moving, we are relying on expert scientific, health service and economic advice and Will make announcements when anything changes’.
Sick of the apparent need for false certainty about things ‘No national lockdown envisaged’ trotted out when we all know it’s complex and may change. Not the type of posturing ‘leadership’ we need now. I don’t believe much of what Hancock/sunak/Patel/Johnson say. This isn’t a time for a ‘party line empty sound bites’

@maddiemookins16mum

Good but you only need to read MN to see no devil will stay at home.
And who came blame them, it's a complete fuck up.
Napqueen1234 · 31/10/2020 07:14

I think primaries and nurseries should remain open so parents can work with secondaries online and universities definitely all online. I teach in HE in a practical subject but my god we can innovate something for a month or two.

Lavenderseas · 31/10/2020 07:20

Germany and France are keeping schools open.

majesticallyawkward · 31/10/2020 07:20

At the point where we give up on educating the children is when we give up on the future of country.

This is spot on. If the schools close it's telling our children we've completely given up on their futures. They are already going to be paying for this long after most of us are gone.

Personally, I just wish BoJo would do something without the week long build up. I don't care what it is at this point, a national lockdown a few weeks ago would have been better than one in a weeks time but what we'll see now is people rushing out 'while they can' which defeats the point.

katienana · 31/10/2020 07:23

I'll cope, I'm one of the lucky ones (SAHM, dh good job, nice house and garden, tesco slots booked weekly till end of November) but I absolutely don't want this because it fucks over the poor yet again.
Everything this government does is performance, always acting too late. Last time the NHS didn't get overwhelmed only because people died at home instead. This was in the Times last week.

Lavenderseas · 31/10/2020 07:24

They can't insist exams go ahead whilst closing schools.

Children are not affected by the virus much and may well build up some immunity. They will be the very last to get any potential vaccine.

Remmy123 · 31/10/2020 07:25

@Dawnlassie err yes I do know they 'can' just close them 😂

I'm saying it's wrong and they shouldn't - loads of schools have had no cases at all!! .. - we have to learn to live with this you can't stop the nation because there are a few people in hospital. Life has to keep moving forward.

Threeweirdsisters · 31/10/2020 07:27

@Remmy123 it's really not a question of a few people in hospital!! I can't believe this attitude/misconception has become so widespread, it's so worrying.

This from the bbc this morning:

Another document, based on NHS England modelling from 28 October, warns that the NHS would be unable to accept any more patients by Christmas, even if the Nightingale hospitals are used and non-urgent procedures cancelled. The document warns that south-west England and the Midlands will be the first to run out of capacity, potentially within a fortnight

@Littleposh

How do people not understand that the whole reason schools can stay open is because we sacrifice other freedoms?? Does your rampant desire to go to the gym or the pub or dorothy bloody perkins outweigh the educational, emotional and mental positives of your children still being able to go to school??
^This all the way^^ whilst the phrase "contact budget" sounds stupid,it's such a basic and easy idea to understand, but appears to be overlooked as inconvenient
MushMonster · 31/10/2020 07:32

I hope they keep the schools open indeed.
But secondaries too. It is no easy for them to learn from home at all, and not sure the school has managed to make some proper material...... last time it took them a while to get there. Though I suppose they are ready now that they had time to prepare. But the children did not like it the first time, so it has negativity associated to it.

MushMonster · 31/10/2020 07:34

Plus these years are really important for them.
Hopefully people will give up throwing partiesHmm this time!

Bambooble · 31/10/2020 07:35

tesco slots booked weekly till end of November

Even if we lockdown, you can still go to supermarkets? Last time a lot of people had slots cancelled whilst they worked out how to prioritise, or because others ordered too many loo rolls to fit on the vans and your orders got bumped.

Remmy123 · 31/10/2020 07:35

So after we all lockdown again including schools. Whst happens after that?

Lockdown doesn't work abd most of these predictions were wrong last time.

Even a good friend who worked in ICU for covid patients doesn't want a full lockdown.

I am in a teir 2 area .. I do not know one person that has it!! I lost my job over the last lockdown!!

RedRiverShore · 31/10/2020 07:38

I have Tesco and Waitrose slots booked as I don’t fancy queueing in the cold, they won’t all be bumped or cancelled, the other shops being shut put more pressure on the supermarkets

Sunflowers246 · 31/10/2020 07:38

Exactly.

We're making sacrifices in other areas SO THAT schools can stay open!

Veterinari · 31/10/2020 07:40

England is not the UK Hmm
You may want to ask MNHQ to edit your title

speakout · 31/10/2020 07:43

I agree.
THis is not about the UK. It is about England.
Not Wales
Not Scotland
Not N Ireland.

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 07:44

@Beebityboo

Can they really prosecute parents for not wanting to send their children to school in these circumstances?
They are not doing so. I do wish people would stop saying that they are. Schools were told not to fine until this half term - with a lockdown in place they are hardly going to start from Monday.
CousinKrispy · 31/10/2020 07:44

That's a great point and I'm happy to keep making sacrifices in order to keep education going.

I think the fines for nonattendance ought to be dropped however, but I've always thought those were crap.

pastandpresent · 31/10/2020 07:44

Remmy123, I live in tier1, and I don't know anyone who had this either. But I know it's serious. England need some wakeup call. Just because we don't know anyone, it doesn't mean it's not happening. I'd rather have full lockdown, including school closure for short period of time, rather than prolonged half assed lockdown.
