The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

Does your rampant desire to go to the gym or the pub or dorothy bloody perkins outweigh the educational, emotional and mental positives of your children still being able to go to school?

Some people don't have kids, yet you're expecting them to sacrifice seeing their family for months on end so that your kids can attend school.

Remmy123 · 31/10/2020 07:48

@pastandpresent and what happens after that lockdown?? Virus will still be around?!

ivftake1 · 31/10/2020 07:56

@Sunflowers246

How do people not understand that the whole reason schools can stay open is because we sacrifice other freedoms?? Does your rampant desire to go to the gym or the pub or dorothy bloody perkins outweigh the educational, emotional and mental positives of your children still being able to go to school?

Exactly.

We're making sacrifices in other areas SO THAT schools can stay open!

Exactly I find it so simple! I don't even have school aged children

@Dawnlassie and that's a good thing is it? Kids stuck at home again? Because of a virus that doesn't affect them? Shall we just feck our kids lives up even more shall we.

My friend is a teacher, and she is currently in hospital fighting for her life. This isn't just about the kids. They have their whole lives in front of them and in time it will be a distant memory.

This.

pastandpresent · 31/10/2020 07:58

Virus will still be around. It always will. We can't change the fate. But science will progress, we may find the way to co exist with it, like we did with a lot of illness in the past.
Winter is coming. People get ill with regular viruses as well as cv. When truly ill people cannot access the medical help because of overwhelmed nhs, it will be a disaster.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 31/10/2020 08:03

O good. I can see dhs shielding resuming soon. But on the other hand send your kids to school in their bubbled of up to 250 kids or we will fine you!
I to think school is driving transmission and feel for school staff so this will be pointless but reassurring to hear from Ireland that it is helping.
Who knows!

OhTheRoses · 31/10/2020 08:07

The risk of dying from this disease is infinitesimal. The country is already bankrupt. Roll on until Feb and we will be back where we were.

Much of the NHS never locked out come June so my support for them is lower than ever. Dd's MH unit is shut - phone calls only. My step has had cataracts cancelled as bad raised to 70% occlusion yet the consultants response "can do it privately for £5k on Friday," consultant surgeon neighbour was at home on full pay for much of the spring and early summer because his hospital only does elective. It's a national disgrace!

Murfs · 31/10/2020 08:10

I'm surprised people in England are shocked by this news. Most of Europe is going into lockdown, NI, Scotland and Wales have a bit of sense and are already in some form of lockdown. The circuit breaker idea was a good one I don't know why the gov didn't use it. Like 2 weeks short lockdown back the end of September when numbers were clearly rising would avoid at least a month of a lockdown now. I'm surprised people aren't angrier at the government's awful handling of this. Use the billions squandered on private contracts to get a proper track and trace and proper support for individuals and businesses so at least there is financial security for people.

HomerRoberts · 31/10/2020 08:11

What a deliberately goady comment. Everyone benefits from investing in children’s future, whether you have children yourself or not, and you bloody well know it.

Some people don’t have elderly parents.
Some people don’t know anyone vulnerable
What’s your point?

We all have a vested interest in ensuring the NHS isn’t overwhelmed if we value access to healthcare.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/10/2020 08:12

Dd's MH unit is shut - phone calls only.

Not a mental health unit, but the department I'm under aren't even doing that and haven't been since the beginning of March. But yes, I can pay to see my consultant if I want to.

You are right, this is a national disgrace.

Jroseforever · 31/10/2020 08:14

* Some people don't have kids, yet you're expecting them to sacrifice seeing their family for months on end so that your kids can attend school*

If it came to that, then yes.

HazeyJaneII · 31/10/2020 08:14

@cologne4711
They are not doing so. I do wish people would stop saying that they are. Schools were told not to fine until this half term - with a lockdown in place they are hardly going to start from Monday.
We were told in very clear terms by school that if we kept ds off school, that fines would be issued. The school spoke to the attendance officer about us.

Ihaveyourback · 31/10/2020 08:15

I am broadly in favour of this, we can have a lockdown now for up to a month and reopen in time for christmas.

Ok
They spoke to you
Then what happened?

Xenia · 31/10/2020 08:16

There are very strong views on all points on this issue. I favour moving all mandatory rules to voluntary. I would rather increase my risk of death by 10x and that of my children than have the measures in face. I certainly support keeping schools open come what may.

notevenat20 · 31/10/2020 08:17

This is a recent estimate of the IFR. What you say is only true for the relatively young as you can see.

And what do you think the risk of dying (from anything) is when hospitals are so overrun that they don’t have capacity to treat people?

What happens when demand for piped oxygen outstrips capacity to supply it?
The case fatality rate remaining low relies on everyone getting the treatment they need.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 31/10/2020 08:19

My extremely anxious at the best of times dd who struggles with school abd has suspected autism was told on day one as was I by the school that they have to fine for non attrndance.
Dh is ecv.

yomellamoHelly · 31/10/2020 08:20

If schools remain open it will all be utterly pointless and the headlines in a month will be about how little impact it has had.

OhTheRoses · 31/10/2020 08:21

I agree with Xenia. Those who want to lock down should if they aren't key workers. My team have been in half and half since July. Nobody has to go to the pub. Those who do should do so with their eyes open.

We have followed rules so far and are happy to be restricted to an extent but people should and need to be at work.

Rushjob · 31/10/2020 08:21

@Ihaveyourback

But will it just be a month. Look at the last 3 week one in March which was still going on in June.
midgebabe · 31/10/2020 08:22

You xania increasing your risk of death by a small amount increased other people's risk immensely
You doing what you want limits the options of those less fortunate

And the reason they are doing this is because of hospital resources.

And if they had the strength to take action at the end of September it would have been much shorter , much less economic hit. Criminal. They faffed about going ooh the economy, what about the economy and so have missed the boat and are now having to take the much more expensive option

Wasting my money, my daughters future because they are the biggest bunch of idiots ever in government

Bambooble · 31/10/2020 08:22

And what do you think the risk of dying (from anything) is when hospitals are so overrun that they don’t have capacity to treat people?

They aren't treating people now to be honest, plenty of people have been unable to access treatment, doctor's appointments, mental health support, and some have effectively been handed a death sentence because of it. The decision was made to exclude those and condemn them due to covid at the start of lockdown.

Barbie222 · 31/10/2020 08:22

Schools are the elephant in the room, he's showing that he's trying everything else first, but the cases won't fall until we change something about the school environment. Once cases are low, school won't magnify them enough. But they were too high in September. SAGE said full opening without mitigation would raise the R by at least 0.5, and what do you know, it's come to pass. Working in schools without masks, PPE etc will very soon be the most risky occupation in terms of catching / spreading.

Eyewhisker · 31/10/2020 08:23

That chart shows that the risk of dying is less than 0.1% for everyone under 50, and the same as flu for children. It only gets really high for the over 70s, which is where over 90% of all deaths happen. The average age of death from covid is well into the 80s and above normal life expectancy.

This is despite very high obesity in the population as a whole and all the other risk factors.
