The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

If we have to lockdown to get the cases down then surely schools have to close as a priority. What a joke. What a pointless lockdown and a pointless government 😡

Amytree · 31/10/2020 00:01

Personally, and I know this will be contentious, I think that we should do everything possible to protect those most at risk. That is those with health issues, and the over 50’s. For me there should be absolutely zero contact face to face with anyone who falls into that category. Offices must be told to allow people to work from home if they want to and if it is possible, not the current system of leaving the interpretation of the guidance to the employer. Grandparents should absolutely not have any contact with grandchildren or their own children unless it is absolutely necessary. People are not following rules, even in high risk areas. My local restaurant was packed earlier despite our hospital being overflowing with Covid patients. Why are people being so reckless? If sensible decisions can’t be made then this decision making needs taking off people and businesses need to shut until it calms down again.

Idontbelieveit12 · 31/10/2020 00:01

I agree that it’s pointless if schools don’t close.

I work in a nursery. In Lancashire. I’m starting to get very worried after hearing of staff members at nurseries nearby testing positive. It’s frustrating as there are families at work who don’t believe in the virus, therefore aren’t following the guidance.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 31/10/2020 00:02

I really don't want to go into lockdown again
My DH was made redundant last time and he is currently working for an agency. He will be the first to go.

I have DC who really missed school. My dd is in year 11.

That said
I work for the NHS and it is starting to look like a warzone again
My mum is very vulnerable
And I can see what's coming.

I don't even know what to suggest anymore
I don't want a lockdown
I don't want to continue working the way I have been. I am physically and mentally exhausted.
I'll be forever traumatised by what I experienced in March and April.

lozjay · 31/10/2020 00:02

Should of been lockdown in half term way too late now all these students don't give a damn. I was in hospital today and nhs staff not even wearing masks properly either

Summerfreeze · 31/10/2020 00:02

@MH1111

Adults at schools (with out underlying health issues) being mostly under 60 have a tiny mortality risk from covid. Certainly comparable to other acceptable risks in society.

Any stats for the infection rate or mortality rate in schools on you? No, you actually have no clue whatsoever (because the data is suppressed) how many teachers are getting sick or dying.

By the way, 30% of the UK population is obese which is an 'underlying health issue'. Are you fine with 30% of teachers being at risk?

AdoraBell · 31/10/2020 00:03

Watching The Last Leg and Adam Hills has just said journalists on Twitter are saying level (or tier) 4 for UK by Wednesday.

MaxNormal · 31/10/2020 00:04

You - and all the other long-serving teachers - haven't built up immunity to it.

Most people's immune systems deal with it just fine. Sars1 confers immunity, some other corona viruses confer some immunity.
Scare mongering isn't helpful.

TheFairyGarden · 31/10/2020 00:04

The danger to children from covid is minuscule. We should absolutely prioritise younger generations and keep schools and universities open

Do you think teachers don’t count??

Thewiseoneincognito · 31/10/2020 00:04

We are utterly fucked beyond belief if we don’t Lockdown next week. It’s a pipe dream thinking it will be ok to lift restrictions come December. Once the numbers don’t go down drastically enough they will close schools again. Part of me thinks they should wait a little longer to show the doubters and mask rebels what it is really capable of and why we have to follow the rules. But that’s not fair on the victims yet it’s a lesson some need to learn.

The road gets very bumpy from here on.

ARoseInHarlem · 31/10/2020 00:05

I don’t see why schools and universities have to shut down. The point isn’t to prevent anyone and everyone from catching the virus: that would be impossible. The point is to limit the number of people who need treatment when they catch it. So, best to shut down everything except what’s required to keep the economy ticking over. Children at school is crucial to that.

I also don’t see the problem with kicking the can down the road, as a strategy. Why not, until a vaccine is rolled out? Periodic, scheduled, shut downs that people can plan around (people being schools/businesses/ everyone) to keep hospital admissions stable and to give healthcare workers a chance to breathe and work under reasonable conditions.

OrtamLeevz · 31/10/2020 00:06
@Dawnlassie and that's a good thing is it? Kids stuck at home again? Because of a virus that doesn't affect them? Shall we just feck our kids lives up even more shall we.
My friend is a teacher, and she is currently in hospital fighting for her life. This isn't just about the kids. They have their whole lives in front of them and in time it will be a distant memory.

MercyBooth · 31/10/2020 00:06

Yeah nothing to do with teens doing track and trace No no look there is someone over there without a mask on.

“What about all the people dying from undiagnosed and untreated health conditions ie cancer?“

How are they helped by hospitals being full of Covid cases and staff off dead/sick/stressed/isolating?

Summerfreeze · 31/10/2020 00:06

@Amytree Plenty of parents of school-age kids are over 50! My DP for one. Should we send all parents over the age of 50 to some kind of isolation zone?!

And you do realise that obesity is an underlying health condition that 30% of the population has - can we manage without 30% of our workforce do you think? Plus the percentage that is over 50. Can we run schools on less than 70% staff? Especially considering the partners of all obese or age 50+ staff would have to stop working too. Don't be silly.

LaraLuce · 31/10/2020 00:07

@RedToothBrush

700 cases a day.

Okayyyy then... That proves it will work in the uk.

How long do you think up to 100,000 a day needs to reduce to 0 as a matter of interest?

That's out of a population of 6.4 million though. I don't know how long it would take, but I'm just providing information that lockdown does actually work as there are a lot of comments saying it doesn't and is pointless. That is not true.
ForBlueSkies · 31/10/2020 00:08

There’d better be a vaccine imminent or this is kicking the can down the road.

I really don’t think lockdowns are the answer. We need sustainable measures (and consistent messaging) until there’s a vaccine.

This is just nonsense. It has been explained over and over again why this is not a realistic scenario. For a start, what about those over 50s/vulnerable people with school aged children?

We are fucked either way ... no economy and a new pandemic of mental health
MercyBooth · 31/10/2020 00:09

I havent been abroad since 1986 I wear a mask, i social distance , i use hand sanitiser when out, I wash my hands at every oppertunity. But as a child free by choice woman who is being stopped from visiting family YET AGAIN in an area with low cases (Braintree) im going to be really fucked off if this turns out to be all for nothing.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 31/10/2020 00:10

I'm a very asthmatic 56 year old teacher. And yes, overweight. Even in our rural low risk area I know lots who have been affected in school. I'm really scared. Yes for myself but also because the viral load of my job means I can't see my 92yo dad who lives on his own. Kids don't self isolate.

Numberblock7 · 31/10/2020 00:10

How many over 50s do you suppose work in the nhs? Do we really think sending them all home is a wise move?!

catchingzzzeds · 31/10/2020 00:11

@OrtamLeevz I'm sorry to hear about your friend, I hope she turns a corner soon

Peppafrig · 31/10/2020 00:12

Lots of parents at my kids school are over 50. Who is going to take the kids to school If the parents aren’t allowed to leave the house . Laughable .

MercyBooth · 31/10/2020 00:12

Whats made me really angry is the pretence that its all about protecting the vulnerable, NO Its all about using the vulnerable as a tool to emotionally blackmail everybody else.

Because if it was all about protecting the vulnerable they wouldnt be left for so long to cope with the symptoms and pain of the non Covid illnesses they have
