The Times is reporting that we are headed for a month long lockdown until Dec 1st.
No details yet...
Why do they always announce things on the drip feed - makes it all even more stressful

'Teachers just have to hope they get a mild viral load'.

I've heard it all now. I'm sick of the constant bile and hatred directed towards school staff on Mumsnet. I guarantee the people making comments like this would not want to step foot into any classroom in a tier 3 area right now, let alone spend a week in a bubble of 200 plus children.

The government have not made things safe for school staff, nor are they likely to either in a lockdown. They should be ashamed, and so should the people making throw away comments like the poster above..

I am a teacher (SEN so smaller classes but closer interaction). In a large secondary school.

Teachers aren’t an amorphous blob. Some of us have our own opinions too.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2020 00:12

That's out of a population of 6.4 million though. I don't know how long it would take, but I'm just providing information that lockdown does actually work as there are a lot of comments saying it doesn't and is pointless. That is not true

Lockdown isn't a way out once you have a certain level of cases. It can only aid suppression not cause elimination.

We are way past the point at which lockdown alone gets us out of this mess unfortunately.

HomerRoberts · 31/10/2020 00:14

Payday today + news of an imminent lockdown = shops rammed tomorrow.

Pugdoglife · 31/10/2020 00:15

I don't want schools to close, I'm far happier at work (teacher) and my children are far happier at school, it's much better for our mental wellness.
However we can't keep denying that it is spreading in schools at a far faster rate than any where else and from there into the community.
Unless something changes with schools there is absolutely no point in ruining businesses even more, it pains me to think of the job losses that will come on the back of this.

I agree. It’s just going to be a cycle of lockdown/easing of restrictions /lockdown indefinitely. It isn’t the answer.
jomartin281271 · 31/10/2020 00:17

According to SAGE's own data, it's schools and universities that are spreading the disease, so all a lock down will achieve is to kill the economy. It's a mercy that kids don't seem to get as ill, but if eight million kids and one and a half million adults are being herded into overcrowded schools every day, with no PPE or proper ventilation, this virus is going nowhere. Every day, they'll bring the virus home with them and at the end of the month we'll be no better off than we are now. Either shut everything down and set up a decent track and trace, or let us all take our chances.

HarryBlackberry1 · 31/10/2020 00:21

Leflic, of course you are entitled to your opinion, and I mine. I love my job. I don't remember at any point calling teachers an amorphous blob.

I am, however, very concerned for vulnerable colleagues, and for those of us who are caring for very sick relatives. I am entitled to have concerns about passing the virus onto my sick mother.

blue25 · 31/10/2020 00:22

Schools will have to shut again at some point. We can’t get on top of it with schools running as they are.

AldiAisleofCrap · 31/10/2020 00:22

No point if they don’t close schools!

GoldenOmber · 31/10/2020 00:23

It seems to be working in Scotland without closing schools, it's definitely working in Ireland without closing schools, so yes there is a point without closing schools.
Siepie · 31/10/2020 00:25

@JS87

It’s too late to close universities now. All teaching can go online but you can’t send all those students in halls of residences back home as loads of them have covid and it will just spread it further.
I agree. If unis hadn't gone back in person, cases would be lower now. But they did open, so it's too late to go back.

I'm a lecturer but currently on maternity leave. Most of my colleagues seem to think the in person teaching is fairly safe. The students are in masks, 2m apart, and wiping down their desks before and after the seminar. I would be surprised if there are many outbreaks from in person teaching at the university.

There are, on the other hand, plenty of students who have covid from outside of class. If all teaching moved online, or students were encouraged to leave halls, they would be spreading it all over the country. At least at university they're mainly living with other young people, who are generally less likely to be seriously affected than their parents.

This.

Although trust this government to miss half term when this has been looking inevitable for a few weeks. What a fuck up that is unless they are planning to close schools.

DBML · 31/10/2020 00:26

Scotland’s numbers are going up!

Staffy1 · 31/10/2020 00:27

Oh bugger, does this mean it'll be impossible to find bog roll in a day or two?

Peppafrig · 31/10/2020 00:27

Scotland’s numbers are going up in areas who have been under similar restrictions for a month or more .

Gcgjiut · 31/10/2020 00:28

It is absurd to say that schools must close - get real, it will destroy the economy if parents can’t work properly and will again force countless women to quit their jobs, setting us back decades. I can only assume those advocating for it either don’t have jobs or are teachers.

What’s more, everyone needs to forget about Christmas - honestly who cares given that the economy and livelihoods are at stake. If everyone had just complied with guidance we would not be here.

GoldenOmber · 31/10/2020 00:28

No, they're not.

That’s deaths @GoldenOmber

Cases are rising and it is a matter of time before deaths do to.

SpongeCake23 · 31/10/2020 00:30

Will we still be allowed support bubbles?

GoldenOmber · 31/10/2020 00:30

@Burpeesshmurpees

What I don't understand is why do they always leak big changes like this before the announcement. It's the worst most unprofessional way of doing things. If they've decided on a plan why not just announce it rather than leaving everyone to just guess at what it will be?
And leaking it to friendly papers, where it sits behind a paywall, and then letting people worry over it until Monday. It is beyond ridiculous. They insist on treating the virus like it's an opposition party they can outflank with spin and they have STILL not learned from this not working!
GoldenOmber · 31/10/2020 00:31

No, it is cases. Look at the key. Blue = new cases. Red = deaths.
Thisisneverending · 31/10/2020 00:31

@MH1111

The danger to children from covid is minuscule. We should absolutely prioritise younger generations and keep schools and universities open
What about the teachers though? No I am not one I just feel bloody sorry for them...
Peppafrig · 31/10/2020 00:32

That graph will have covered the school holidays so could be why it went down and now schools are back it will rise again .

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2020 00:33

I should add that victoria had an aggressive trace and track system which could keep up and on top of the number of cases.

Again we are way past this point where this proves effective enough to help a great deal.

The government have changed policy. Johnson moonshot 15 minute mass testing seems to be the focus now. The trouble is this has been oversold as a tool which will be available in the near future. Trials still are ongoing but they are miles off the numbers needed to even make a dent. This option is at best a medium term one which is only likely to start rolling out in spring at the earliest. Which will be too late for this wave unfortunately.
