Following from another thread really...

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-areas-ranked-worst-coronavirus-4637950.amp

Why, if Bristol has such high rates, is it still in tier one? Maybe because surrounding areas are lower.... but wouldn't that be a reason to increase the tier to stop other areas increasing?

I'm so confused as to reasoning why Hmm

Both Bristol city centre and Stoke Bishop have high student populations,

The student numbers are not representative of the general population, both because of the testing regimes the unis have in place (I'm sure Bristol is no exception) and also the lower impact on hospitals because young people are less likely to have severe symptoms.

knittingaddict · 25/10/2020 19:19

It's the students. They won't go up a tier until it is spreading in the wider population.

Relative lives in Bristol and works at the uni.

laughoutquiet · 25/10/2020 19:20

Thank you both, I hadn't thought about it that way.

I think as others have said it’s mainly cuz of uni. When we’re at 3k infected last week half of it was uni students (1.5k).

Also still the numbers are lower than other areas of the country so that’s why they’re focusing there rather than in Bristol.

PicsInRed · 25/10/2020 19:22

Anecdotally, Bristol had "something" nasty - similar to covid - sweep through late last year. Who knows.

NaturalLight · 25/10/2020 19:23

In my area, I signed up to Covid updates from our councillor. These have been fantastic at explaining where the cases are. And why at the beginning we didn’t move into tier 2. It was only when they saw transmission outside the students that there was concern. Have you got something similar in Bristol that would explain?

PicsInRed · 25/10/2020 19:23

Which is to say - perhaps there is enough residual immune response that it isn't able to transition out of the student population into the general Bristol population.

LST · 25/10/2020 19:23

Same where we are. We have Keele Uni which is taking the rates up but our tier level hasn't gone up. Whereas Stoke and Cheshire have

My son and husband had some nasty flu during the Xmas. I didn’t catch it of them or had symptoms. I had a fast blood test for the covid and tested negative in may.

Yep, quite a few of my friends, all in good health usually and keen on keeping fit and eating well were really poorly. All with a similar thing, that sounds suspiciously like covid does, but some were bedbound, and one nearly a year on is still quite lethargic. It could obviously be a number of other viruses that do the rounds, but it does seem odd, and wasn't like anything theyd had before.

Keepdistance · 25/10/2020 19:49

It's gone from 26 per 100k in sept to over 220 per 100k.
N somerset and bath and s gloucester all also rising.

A lot of schools affected but seem to only maybe be a few kids/teqcher rather than large outbreaks

Bouncycastle12 · 25/10/2020 20:03

Exeter has a student driven bounce a few weeks but they seem to have got it under control. Could be same thing happening in Bristol now.

This is really interesting as I was really ill end of last year and end of January (&I'm in Bristol!) it was v similar to covid symptoms.
year5teacher · 25/10/2020 20:34

There’s big student halls in Stoke bishop, and tons in town. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was it.

year5teacher · 25/10/2020 20:34

My dad was poorly in December with a chest infection and loss of smell. No point speculating but it makes you wonder... I’d be pretty happy if he had already had it!

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 25/10/2020 20:40

In Bristol. DH had chest infection, loss of taste in mid February. He called NHS 111, but the options were not important has he hadn't visited Wuhan or Italy. Just Spain...

Arcadia · 25/10/2020 20:42

Oxford has gone completely crazy, looking at the figures we should be in some form of local lockdown, it's quite alarming how it's gone up in recent days (I follow the Zoe app). Mainly students but I know personally of at least three non student cases now from different sources 😱

Jellykat · 25/10/2020 20:55

Thats interesting about 'something nasty' in Bristol late last year.

DS1 who lives in Bristol, came home for Christmas.. shortly after DS2 was really really ill to the point i nearly took him to A&E a couple of times. I then got it 10 days later, i coughed up blood and struggled to breath with flu like symptoms, then my DM caught it, no taste or smell for 4 days..
I was convinced i had pleurisy but the GP said it was a virus...

OverTheRainbow88 · 25/10/2020 20:57

We’re in Bristol, it’s the students I think.
Bristol uni has 1100 cases alone, not including the other uni UWE.

My son had a virus at the end of January; the cough lasted for 8 weeks after he felt better. Interestingly he also had nausea which I subsequently read is a symptom in children with COVID.

notevenat20 · 26/10/2020 20:23

Essentially all the students are getting infected. The big question in all uni towns is will they infect the rest of the city.

NotAKaren · 26/10/2020 20:27

What matters is hospital cases and how they are coping. If hospital admissions reach a certain point then there will be further restrictions.

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 26/10/2020 20:31

I'm in/near Bristol. My mum had that sort of thing too aound the same time - particularly the cough. Others seemed to as well. I have wondered.

Hugosmugo · 26/10/2020 20:32

Strange. Also Bristol and also had the worst illness I've ever experienced end of November last year. I had time off work which isn't like me at all.

Does anyone think it was done on purpose allowing students back? It was inevitable that it would spread like wildfire. Was it a tactic?

cushioncovers · 26/10/2020 20:50

Bristol here as well and lots of us at work had a nasty virus in Dec/jan recently we all had blood tests for antibodies (key workers) but have all tested negative, indicating that we haven't had Covid. 🤷🏻‍♀️
