Following from another thread really...

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-areas-ranked-worst-coronavirus-4637950.amp

Why, if Bristol has such high rates, is it still in tier one? Maybe because surrounding areas are lower.... but wouldn't that be a reason to increase the tier to stop other areas increasing?

I'm so confused as to reasoning why Hmm

Does anyone think it was done on purpose allowing students back? It was inevitable that it would spread like wildfire. Was it a tactic?

No. The universities are just massive bloated bureaucracies these days and need constant and increasing income to keep afloat.

notevenat20 · 26/10/2020 21:09

What matters is hospital cases and how they are coping. If hospital admissions reach a certain point then there will be further restrictions.

Yes. The pessimistic but probably realistic view is that first all the students get infected and are not very ill. Then with thousands of infectious students wandering around the city they infect the rest of the population and eventually it spreads to the over 60s who start appearing in the hospitals. If I had to guess I say that whole process would work its way through by Christmas. Only time will tell.

Just keeping an eye on this as live in the area.

Bristol now is on 328 and Bath on 172 per 100,000

Still Tier 1. Really busy here this weekend in Bath, queues for e.g. Primark and generally busy, guess it is half term. More cases in students

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/10/2020 13:58

Most recent news on Bristol I found here...

www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2020-10-26/david-wood-blog-rising-coronavirus-infection-rates-sees-calls-for-bristol-and-plymouth-to-be-moved-into-tier-2

"The weekly infection rate in Bristol has now moved up to 264.6 per 100,000 people - well above the England average of 201.1 per 100,000.

The city has seen a significant number of cases amongst students at the city's two universities, however there are now concerns that the virus is spreading within the community and not just in the student population.

Public Health England has confirmed it is looking at the transmission in the city and whether more action should be taken.

As I understand it a regular meeting between Government and local health teams took place on Friday, 23 October, and the decision was made to leave Bristol in the first tier for now.

The hope is that extra enforcement could make the difference, especially as the majority of the new cases are centred around the city centre.

However it is worth noting that other parts of the country that were added into the second tier last week have rates below Bristol"

Bristol is moving to "Tier 1 plus" Confused

Ooooer, it's like premium economy.
Do we get an extra pillow?

AriettyHomily · 28/10/2020 14:34

My office in Bristol has just been closed because of confirmed cases.

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/10/2020 14:39

It’s worrying. I’ve stopped eating out again as 4 local Restaurants have closed for 2 Weeks with workers ill.

I’m worried about the numbers Then I do wonder if it’s the students. Bristol uni has 1300 cases UWE about 500 that’s 1800 of students alone

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/10/2020 14:43

I think it's like a Last Chance Saloon Wink Bath cases are high too now, on 190 today.

Saranvenya · 28/10/2020 14:45

The majority of my students either have Covid or are in isolation because their friends have it! This is Bristol Uni.
I had something in December and was really ill, my breathing is still crap from it! GP said at the time it was really bad flu.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/10/2020 14:47

2 emails from our Bath school about cases in last two weeks, nothing before. To talk of 'plus' here yet it seems though!

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/10/2020 14:47

No talk I mean

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 28/10/2020 14:52

I'm in Bristol too ( @Orangeblossom7777 maybe it's an orange thing?!)
I actually overlook one of the hall of residence and they're nuts. The students are constantly grouping together for kitchen parties (definitely more than 6) and of course they're interacting in the local community, using shops, pubs and cafes etc. Of course it will get out into the community in the next week or two.
I'm not quite sure what Marvin's 8 Covid Marshals are going to do to stop it?
Surely it's just a matter of time until tier 2?

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/10/2020 14:53

@Orangesarenottheonlyfruit

Maybe we are neighbours as I also overlook a students halls where they are partying!! We’ve started not shopping in our local food shop as it’s full if students and going to the next area for food!!

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/10/2020 14:55

In Bath we've got lots of stuff going on, film festival planned, marquees for the students to drink and have comedy clubs in, and a mini Christmas market...they seem keen to keep us in the first Tier I feel. We'll see.

We've never really had a 'first wave' don't think Bristol had either so maybe it is a bit new.

laughoutquiet · 28/10/2020 14:57

But what does one plus actually mean? Some extra wardens?!

Me too.

My daughter lives in the student area of Bath and it's not easy going there. I end up walking in the road half the time.

MarcelineMissouri · 28/10/2020 14:58

So the grand plan to streamline things and help people know where they stand with 3 tiers is now introducing a tier 1 plus, a probably 4th and 5th tier coming soon, different rules for different places in the same tier.... yep clear as mud!

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 28/10/2020 14:58

@OverTheRainbow88 maybe!
Yes, it's all feeling a bit real. I am back to having food delivered because nipping to tesco metro certainly has an increased risk.
Tricky to stop my 13 year old from meeting her mates in Cafe Nero though.

Yes! Exactly!
MustWe · 28/10/2020 15:05

And tinpot local mayors inventing their own tiers as they go along.

I look forward to somewhere deciding they’re in tier minus 3 and can do whatever the fuck they like now.

Keepdistance · 28/10/2020 15:09

Thing is to help universities which could have been online (and schools) we now have an outbreak in all these areas (n somerset/bath/bristol).
It could be that it might drop a bit next week as schools are off this week.
I dont feel like the increase is being publicised enough. And it probably doesnt help that bristol has been kept as tier 1. Surely anywhere with a uni should have gone higher a few weeks ago.

We also had something nasty in dec. But then got probable covid in apr.

With 2 unis it's probable it was more here earlier than it seemed.

BarbaraManatee · 28/10/2020 15:14

I'm in Bristol & know 6 people who've had it recently. One of them works in a restaurant in a student-y area but no other uni links, AFAIK. It's freaked me out a bit. One of them is someone who works in the same building as me, although our paths don't cross enough for me to have to isolate. I only knew one person who had it in the first wave & that was a care home link so it's suddenly seeming rather close to home!

knittingaddict · 28/10/2020 15:15

We visited our daughter in Bristol on Saturday because I was convinced they would be in tier 2 soon. What the heck is tier 1 plus? I mean, I know what it is because I read the report, but really...

EasterIssland · 28/10/2020 15:52

@AriettyHomily

My office in Bristol has just been closed because of confirmed cases.
@AriettyHomily Wonder whether you’re working where I’m thinking My office used to be in the city centre. I have 3 emails in the last days from that building. Someone tested positive on Monday and their colleagues have been tested and some have been positive. And on another floor another person has tested positive as well.
