Following from another thread really...

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-areas-ranked-worst-coronavirus-4637950.amp

Why, if Bristol has such high rates, is it still in tier one? Maybe because surrounding areas are lower.... but wouldn't that be a reason to increase the tier to stop other areas increasing?

I'm so confused as to reasoning why Hmm

I understand that and wouldn't want them to close completely but they need to make sacrifices like anyone else. They are making money out of students whilst providing little of the services for their money they promised. Instead they are responsible for much of the spread of COVID. I find it hard to believe they don't have any cash reserves and would go out of business if students went home. That would be a completely irresponsible way to run a business. The head guy should take a pay cut and they should sell some assets if they really need to to avoid closing. I imagine most large universities have enough cash reserves to see this through. I feel the council is pandering to them as they are too powerful.

It doesn't make sense that they are left to their own devices if the government is serious about reducing numbers.

What would you do about courses that actually require practical teaching time? Lots of the sciences, medicine, dentistry? All of which we rather need more professionals in, sooner rather than later. Not to mention arts courses - very hard to do acting on line or anything creative involving materials. A lot of second year students in these subjects will have already missed a good chunk of anything practical between March and June, so really need time in labs/studios/workshops to catch up.

notevenat20 · 30/10/2020 15:45

Looks like tier 2 is coming soon to Bristol. Tier 3 unis seem to be doing no face to face teaching. What is the rule for tier 2 unis?

studychick81 · 30/10/2020 15:45

That's a tricky one, yes. My course requires practical teaching time, I have to do it 1-1 with that person and then film myself, same with the assessments I have to carry out.

I guess it might have to be postponed just like they have done with school exams.

Or switch the elements of the course around so the more academic part is done first and then the practical parts later- hopefully when/if things have calmed down. Again, this is what they have done on my course. This is the first year they have done it like this. Much of the practical elements are being posted out to us to practice on our partner- someone else on the course, all via zoom and needing to be recorded. It could be done.

studychick81 · 30/10/2020 15:46

When do we predict tier 2 is coming? I keep looking up when an announcement is likely to be made.

OverTheRainbow88 · 30/10/2020 16:32

I think tier 2 by next Monday... if there isn’t already a national lockdown!

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 30/10/2020 16:50

I think tier 2 by Wednesday to give a week for the +1 to (not) take effect.

studychick81 · 30/10/2020 16:56

Eek! As in Monday or Wednesday next week?

I work from home which requires clients coming into my house. How do I stand on this?

OverTheRainbow88 · 30/10/2020 17:01

My next Monday was literally a total guess!!

Edujaded · 30/10/2020 18:36

Bi-weekly report late. The positivity rate on Tuesday's report was 14%. If it gets much higher, it seems inevitable that Bristol will have to move up through the tiers.

HesterBlue · 30/10/2020 18:51

Our no of cases per 100k has jumped from 365 per 100k on weds to 399 per 100k today, almost as high as Leeds. I'm amazed we've not been moved up the tiers already.

HesterBlue · 30/10/2020 19:05

Re UWE, they started term with an online intro teaching block so their students only moved into halls 2 weekends ago. So their numbers are probably a couple of weeks behind Bristol Uni's atm

notevenat20 · 30/10/2020 19:09

The thing to track is number of infections by age of infected person. I don't know if that is available somewhere for a single city.

JamminDoughnuts · 30/10/2020 19:19

dd is in bristol and was ill much earlier in the year, perhaps february. she insists she had the virus then

Edujaded · 30/10/2020 19:21

@notevenat20, the PHE surveillance graphs break down the age profiles for the South West. It shows all age groups are on the rise. It even breaks down the profile of educational ages showing the university and college cases are dropping but school and nursery age cases are increasing.

www.gov.uk/government/statistics/national-flu-and-covid-19-surveillance-reports

Edujaded · 30/10/2020 19:50

Bi-weekly report out now from Bristol city council:

'Bristol is currently a Tier 1 area in the new national assessment system. This week we announced additional measures that we are taking within Tier 1
to reduce the rate of infection. The situation is extremely challenging and we anticipate that additional measures will be needed in the very near
future.'

Positivity rate 14.7% (1 in 7 tests)
384.9 cases per 100 000
Test and trace reaching 45.6% of contacts

notevenat20 · 30/10/2020 20:02

Test and trace reaching 45.6% of contacts

That is terrible! Do they give a clue why test and trace is failing so badly?

notevenat20 · 30/10/2020 20:05

It even breaks down the profile of educational ages showing the university and college cases are dropping but school and nursery age cases are increasing.

I can't dig out the data on my phone. What does it have for over 60s?

Edujaded · 30/10/2020 20:40

All age groups are rising (increasing rate) including the over 60s according to PHE report. Bristol bi-weekly report makes this summary:

'While the majority of our cases are in younger age groups, and reflect schools returning and universities opening, we are also seeing a rise cases among
adults, including those 60+.'

EasterIssland · 30/10/2020 20:44

8 cases in Hargreaves Lansdown

I’d have hoped / expected they were wfh !

Tier 2/3 here we come, in that case.

EasterIssland · 30/10/2020 20:46

Re: unís

This week, UWE recorded a rise of 53 cases on Monday, 35 on Tuesday, 43 on Wednesday and 45 on Thursday.

In comparison, the University of Bristol recorded 32 cases on Monday, 52 on Tuesday, 46 on Wednesday and 45 on Thursday.

Between 350-400 casas in the uni this week!

Keepdistance · 31/10/2020 01:05

Lots of grandparents still collecting from school here
Many kids going to each others houses after school too
Not 1 person recently hand sanitising after using playground equipment.
Everyone's kids back at gymnastics and rainbows.
There are several places like the zoo and slimbridge i think that you need to go through inside to get into and obviously children wont be wearing masks. If the uk rate is say 1 in 100 there would be many unmasked infectious kids going through these places.

With n somerset it went hot early maybe sept and most secondarys had a case but seems to have gone quiet.
I think n somerset and bath and n somerset need to all be considered with bristol as for work and leisure people go across. And the bristol bus for eg goes all the way to wsm.

Hopefully it could drop due to half term??

Dc had a covid test in sept and i was shocked when dp admitted it was inside a tent/building as that seems a bad idea as many might cough/gag and obviously maskless at that point.
Having a 1/7 was it changeof being next to an infected person in a queue doesnt sound great.
There were no postal tests or drivethrough.

But if you imagine only 1/10 students had symptoms at one uni when they had covid then the 70 cases in school would be 700 really and 630 of which asymptomatic.

OverTheRainbow88 · 31/10/2020 07:13

Looks like national lockdown going ahead from next week!

Hopefully our schools won’t close.

notevenat20 · 31/10/2020 07:45

They can’t send the university students home so what will happen to them in any lockdown?
