Time taken to get test results

I’m really annoyed it takes so long! Surely the government should have this sorted by now. The whole family is on day 3 off school and work. My sons cough was borderline in my opinion. I’m wishing I hadn’t bothered getting him tested so we weren’t in this position! We’ve been tested before and had results in under 12 hrs, so it is possible.

I can’t be the only one thinking like this, surely the delay in getting results is going to put some people off being tested at all.

@Puffthemagicdragongoestobed gives me some faith I might still get them before tomorrow then! Our test was Thursday just gone. Can I ask was the result via email or text?

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 18/10/2020 14:16

@kittlesticks our results came via both email and text. I had thought they'd never come! I myself had done tests when things weren't so busy and always got results within 1.5 days, so I found the wait for DD's result excruciating!

ImSleepingBeauty · 18/10/2020 14:36

My DC was tested once before. I waited a day for the test to come. A day to post to back. 4 days for the result and swore I’d never get any of us tested again.
But then one of my DC came home from school coughing. The cough got progressively worse that night. They also have sore throat. Eventually temp check came back raised and I felt like I had no choice but to get them a test.
So now the whole household is isolating again and waiting for the result. And my DC is fully recovered.
It’s excruciating waiting. The not knowing how long it will be or whether we can make any plans.
Anyone had a result on a Sunday?

popcornsong · 18/10/2020 15:33

East of England. Home test posted Thursday 5pm. Result received today Sunday at 3pm by both text and email.

kittlesticks · 18/10/2020 16:16

So jealous of people who have got their results. 74 hours now 😐

foxysocks · 18/10/2020 16:41

We’ve been waiting 128 hours. It’s torture.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 18/10/2020 16:44

@foxysocks

We’ve been waiting 128 hours. It’s torture.
Do you think we will get them or have you accepted they maybe lost? I've just told my manager I probably won't be in now for the rest of the week as think they are lost so have resided to doing full isolation period 🙁
RiseUpWoman · 18/10/2020 16:50

@Dickorydockwhatthe @foxysocks I definitely think they've been lost. 103 for us.

bootsandcats · 18/10/2020 17:22

We've now been waiting 7 days so we're assuming they've been lost. Really annoying, as one child who has had no symptoms at all will miss two weeks of school now.

RiseUpWoman · 18/10/2020 18:22

@bootsandcats wonder what the process is around retesting or if it's even worth it?

MyPersona · 18/10/2020 18:43

I was tested at 11.45 am yesterday and received my (negative) result at 6pm tonight. I booked the test at 11pm the night before and had 3 options for location within 10 miles, and lots of choices of time slots at the one I chose.

bootsandcats · 18/10/2020 18:49

@RiseUpWoman

We’ve considered it, but the child who we got tested is at 10 days now so it’s too late really, and it will probably be half term by the time we get them back anyway (if we get them back!).

BatSegundo · 18/10/2020 19:30

There has been an issue with the Glasgow Lighthouse lab which means tests have had to be sent to other labs and is effecting UK lab capacity overall.

May be the cause of some of our woes, I don't know. I think DS would kill me if I made him do another test!

hillbilly · 18/10/2020 19:33

We went to a walk in centre in London Friday 3pm and had results back today around 1pm. Both negative thankfully 😀

throwaway100000 · 18/10/2020 19:37

I took a test in July and had my results in 24 hours.

DP received his results today, 11 days after test...

BatSegundo · 18/10/2020 19:56

Crikey, @throwaway100000 I'm amazed it was still valid after that long!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 18/10/2020 20:27

@FiveMoreMinutesPlease I have been so interested in who else is doing it!
We were told if it was positive we'd get a call but otherwise I think email? In this case I feel very relaxed about not getting quick response for negative as I think only the positive for the scheme need to be immediate.

Is your whole household doing it?

The swabs were much bigger this week...

SpideyMom · 18/10/2020 20:29

Abit worried reading through people's wait times. Me and my DS tests were Friday morning and I was really hoping to have our results back by today.

If im positive then fair enough we have to isolate but waiting around and losing wages like many others isnt ideal. Id by fuming to be waiting up to a week (or more) to be told we are negative

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 18/10/2020 20:31

@mumsiedarlingrevolta yes, whole house doing it. Still haven't heard from them re doing week 3 swab though. Should have been Saturday . I have logged a call so hopefully will get A call soon.

Wowthisisreal · 18/10/2020 20:34

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt also taken from the gov website:

If you live with someone with COVID-19 symptoms or a positive test result
Stay at home
Stay at home for 14 days. This is because you may have been exposed to the virus and could pass it on to others, even if you don’t have symptoms. Do not leave your home unless in certain circumstancess_, and only exercise within your home, garden or private outdoor space.
Your 14-day isolation period starts from the day when the first person in your household developed symptoms.

From the NHS website:

When to self-isolate
Self-isolate immediately if:
• you have any symptoms of coronaviruss_ (a high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste)
• you've tested positive for coronavirus – this means you have coronavirus
• you live with someone who has symptoms or tested positive
• someone in your support bubble has symptoms or tested positive

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 18/10/2020 20:54

@wowthisisreal yes it does say that but it is still not legally binding ie you cannot be fined or get into trouble with the police for not self isolating due to family members having symptoms. So its a kind of you can't go out but also noone can stop you going out iyswim. There's also no law against not being truthful about symptoms ie telling the school the dc have a tummy bug, or your employer its a migrain when it's really a fever and a cough. Obviously if it was a 24hr turn around on results then this would massively limit the temptation to be dishonest. 5 days waiting is ridiculous imo when the vast majority (95%) of tests are negative.

Rosehassometoes · 18/10/2020 21:04

128 hours here and nothing. As it’s now night it’ll be 140 hours minimum before I hear.

kittlesticks · 18/10/2020 21:10

78 hours here still waiting. Sad

notanoctopus · 18/10/2020 21:32

Unless it starts getting easier to get a test and results faster, I can see lots of people not bothering with borderline shall I /shan't I tests e.g. a kid has some coughing episodes with a cold one day, tests unavailable or too far away, cough goes next day - test or not? @Sunshinegirl82 that article makes a lot of sense.

Moomin37 · 18/10/2020 21:43

84 hour wait so far... two key workers needing to get on next week.
