It is exhausting. I mostly avoid the media now as once you see how they like to ramp everyone’s emotions up and down for sales it’s much better to seek out original scientific information instead.

COVID has dominated for so long and yet there isn’t always much new to say, so the headlines and stories go up a few octaves.

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2020 10:23

There are a few programmes which are very good - More or Less, The Life Scientific, The Long View all R4. I find it easier to not get harassed by headlines if I choose what to read / listen to

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2020 10:23

Oh and ‘how to vaccinate the world’ R4

TheChineseChicken · 29/11/2020 10:45

@Orangeblossom7777

There is some talk about how if some vaccines are more suitable for the younger age groups then that would be OK as could use for the majority and the others for the older groups so that could work OK

Apparently that happens already in e.g. flu vaccines anyway. Also it would be a yearly jab.

Seen stuff about it being rolled out in my area from next weekend! Exciting.

Yes, the flu jab is different for older and younger age groups.

Funny how no one (with a few exceptions and anti-vaxxers excluded) has ever questioned the safety / efficacy etc of any other jab they have received or given them a second though, yet are full of scepticism about this one. Does anyone know the efficacy of any other vaccines? Me neither

LeFluffyPants · 29/11/2020 10:57

Wow that’s so exciting Orange - do you mind me asking what area you’re in, even just the region?

I’m in London, my best friend’s partner is a hospital doctor and she’s had a notice from her hospital that they’re gearing up for vaccines on 7 December!

Thanks so much for this thread by the way xx

We have had very good vaccine news the last few Mondays. So I wonder what tomorrow will bring...

Orangeblossom7777 · 29/11/2020 19:27

I have seen some good news on the exams today.. fingers crossed this happens...

It was saying - pupils given the topics to revise, along with generous grading, exams still to go ahead but a few weeks later in June

Then, as well as this to help pupils who have had more disruption this year, those pupils will get a * next to their grades and more support from colleges due to this regarding their grades

blametheparents · 29/11/2020 21:12

@Orangeblossom7777 - That’s good.
I’d like exams to go ahead. My DD is struggling to make a decision regarding A levels and I think exams will help her make that decision.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/11/2020 21:17

Yes, my dd also has GCSEs and although she is fairly stressed by the prospect I don’t think she would benefit long term from their being cancelled.

Orangeblossom7777 · 29/11/2020 21:32

The thing I liked was apparently they asked pupils what would make it easier and this is what the majority chose....for example another option was increased flexibility but it was felt choosing topics and more generous grading would be more helpful.

Orangeblossom7777 · 29/11/2020 21:33

My DS is struggling with the stress of GCSE mocks 'possibly being the real exam's Jan so this is a relief to us.

30% fall in cases - combination of tiers and lockdown

On average. Even higher NE and NW with up to 50% fall

Still downward pressure needed especially pre Christmas but it’s good to hear

React study

Covid infections in England fall by 30% over lockdown - React study www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55124286

Zahawi has just said on R4 that he expects most places to want to see vaccine status before allowing entry - including pubs and restaurants.

So this will guarantee a huge take up of the vaccine, and a return to normal asap.

That's great. I'm in the NE so that's good to hear.

Was there any indication what would be used to prove vaccine status?
IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 30/11/2020 13:50

Wow, while I think this is probably a good way to encourage vaccine uptake, I'm not sure I would want to be on the frontline of having to ask to see someone's vaccine card before serving them a pint.

tootyfruitypickle · 30/11/2020 14:07

He said vaccine status would be added to the app, but presumably also some kind of certificate.

I do question how enforceable it will be - but then pubs already refuse to serve under 18s, so maybe ....

I agree with their stance generally about not engaging in debate with anti vac and just making the realities of that stance difficult , it will have an effect.

tootyfruitypickle · 30/11/2020 14:09

Sounds like if you want to travel internationally, you will need the vaccine, and that is easily enforceable.

tootyfruitypickle · 30/11/2020 14:10

I’m so excited for 2021 😎

MaxNormal · 30/11/2020 14:24

I assume they'll have some sort of exemption mechanism is place for those that can't have it?

TheChineseChicken · 30/11/2020 14:45

Surely this would only be a temporary thing - once enough people are vaccinated it shouldn’t matter if some people aren’t due to herd immunity? Same as for any contagious disease we vaccinate against

TeaInTheGarden · 30/11/2020 19:35

This is fine by me- happy to take the vaccine for everyone’s sake!
Only thing I’m a bit concerned about is what the stance will be regarding children and travelling abroad. As obviously there are no plans to vaccinate kids- I’m hoping they would be treated as exempt and allowed to travel as long as parents vaccinated?
We hope to go to the US in 2022 (planned for 2021 originally). I’m very glad Trump won’t be in charge when it comes to decisions like this!
