Thank you to those who have contributed to the good news thread over the past few weeks. We are at 40 pages so here is a new one to continue sharing good news stories :)

@PatienceVirtue I find it fascinating too. I have realised that a lot of people I know (this is a surprise with some, and less so with others) cannot help but dwell on the negative. I have also been surprised at my own ability to twist the same information to the positive. I am a Type 1 diabetic and hence it could go potentially tits up, for example. However, the other side of this is that I will also be closer to the front of the queue when it comes to any vaccine so it's not all bad.
Granted not the best example but it's a positive spin nonetheless. It also helps that I live somewhere semi rural, if I still lived in a city I might be more anxious about the current situation.
I do think the light at the end of the tunnel is certainly getting bigger and I genuinely think that things will start to change, for the better, very quickly and very soon

www.thejournal.ie/pfizer-vaccine-95-effective-5270673-Nov2020/

Better and better.

Will they be first out of the block?

Deliaskis · 18/11/2020 13:08

You beat me to it @TheKeatingFive , I was just about to come and post the additional Pfizer news.

Stat have more: www.statnews.com/2020/11/18/pfizer-biontech-covid19-vaccine-fda-data/?utm_source=STAT+Newsletters&utm_campaign=377073e675-RO_COPY_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8cab1d7961-377073e675-150186853

They had 170 cases of C19 in the study, 162 were in placebo group.
Of the 10 severe cases, 9 were in the placebo group.
No serious safety concerns, fatigue in 3.7% and headache in 2%.

This is really as good as it gets for a vaccine.

TheKeatingFive · 18/11/2020 13:09

Wow, that’s amazing

CornishYarg · 18/11/2020 13:53

@PatienceVirtue Yes, I'm sure the psychologists and behavioural scientists are going to produce some interesting studies on people's behaviour throughout this!

People have different coping mechanisms; some like to latch on to the positive and can cope with some of it not coming true as it's more important for them to remain optimistic, and others prefer to wait until they have definitive proof of good news because they can't bear their hopes being dashed. Neither is wrong or better than the other. But the people who wind me up are those who join a positive discussion and not only pour cold water on it, but do so by making up shit about having inside knowledge.

MarshaBradyo · 18/11/2020 14:32

Such great news re Pfizer! Especially the age group part. God I’m so bloody grateful and relieved.

PatienceVirtue · 18/11/2020 15:37

I wonder what makes people into positivity-huggers as opposed to negativity-clingers.

I really don't mind that others want to wallow, that's up to them. But I really resent them coming onto here when there are plenty of other threads on which to hang out with your people. There also seems to be some judgment - that we're all happy idiots. In fact, this thread contains some of the most educated, logical and well informed commentary that I've seen anywhere.

Deliaskis · 18/11/2020 16:10

@PatienceVirtue I also see a lot of phraseology that is passed off as authority, and used to support the 'happy idiots' idea. For example 'there is no evidence that...' (as in no evidence that immunity will last, or that a vaccine will work), is often used to imply, in effect 'therefore it definitely won't', as if the absence of evidence is evidence of absence. It really isn't. We're learning all the time, and there is a lot of data yet to be revealed, but it doesn't mean, in the meantime, that it is in any way rational or balanced to assume that a lack of evidence of a thing means that it is not and will never be possible.

I think this starts to connect to the statistical literacy thread a little as well. It's really interesting how distorted a story can become.

Good news on immunity - ' could last for years'

If that's behind a pay wall, here's the report from the La Jolla Institute;

Re:Oxford vaccine. All my colleague's husband knows is that they are making preparations for the news teams arriving on site soon. Exciting!!!

Arcadia · 18/11/2020 20:34

I've so been positive throughout. Well mostly! I've discovered a massive optimistic streak in myself having been a bit doom and gloom at other times of my life.
I was on a positive news thread back in March/April/May on here... we used to post the daily telegraph positive news, haven't seen it for ages. Did someone resurrect it?

FuzzyPuffling · 18/11/2020 20:45

Thank goodness for this thread. And thank you all for keeping my spirits up.

We've had a very low few weeks (CEV) and it's hard...but oh my, the news is sometimes so bloody exciting!

(And I have just bought some mouthwash - it has to have a specific ingredient in it, but I've forgotten what. Anyway, I made a note that Corsodyl, Dently and oral b are the ones with it in!)

FuzzyPuffling · 18/11/2020 20:45

Dentyl not dently!

cathyandclare · 18/11/2020 20:46

I think this may be the continuation of that thread- which shows there has been plenty of positive news since then.

Layladylay234 · 18/11/2020 20:52

I remember you (or your name at least!). That was the thread I would check in March and April when all the other threads had terrified me. I was 7 months pregnant when we went into lockdown and my son came down with a cough and temperature the day of lockdown. The people on that thread talked me down massively. So nice that the positivity has continued x
chri55ie · 18/11/2020 20:57

That has made my day! @Arcadia

Fleshlumpeater · 18/11/2020 20:59

And mine! Now wondering how much prep one needs for news teams...

2020CanDoOne · 18/11/2020 21:51

Yes, excellent stuff! It’s been reported (can’t remember where) that the news from the Oxford Vaccine team will arrive “pretty soon” which left me wondering what the definition of pretty soon is... days?

chri55ie · 18/11/2020 21:53

I would say pretty soon meant days....suspense is killing me!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2020 21:55

@Fleshlumpeater

And mine! Now wondering how much prep one needs for news teams...
I am imagining them moving chairs around and sending someone out to buy Hobnobs.
TeaInTheGarden · 18/11/2020 22:52

So do we think the Oxford team have unblinded the data and are just getting ready to announce..?! The suspense is ridiculous!

If it does work and we have 100 million doses.... how amazing. Do we know how long it would take to get all the doses?

Smallwhiterat · 18/11/2020 22:56

They said 30m of Oxford ready by September. In reality it might be 4m by Christmas according to Kate Bingham. Still, that’s 2m people potentially covered by then, which is 2m more than before.

TeaInTheGarden · 18/11/2020 23:39

That’s a bit of a difference..?!
But anyway, it will just be amazing to get the vaccines started this year, as then we will be on our way back to normality. Even if it’s a long way, every journey starts with a single step.
I’m imagining a new set of daily stats reporting how many people have been vaccinated each day...!

tobee · 19/11/2020 00:27

Re the mouthwash I've been wondering and wondering exactly how one would need to use it? When I went to the emergency dentist soon after lockdown 1 was lifted they made me rinse for some time with what I was told was particularly effective in killing viruses and I thought "ooh, is that true? Or is to just hopeful?"

Reading a thread earlier about 5 days for Christmas "if we're good boys and girls" it made me so happy to think how brilliant the 2 vaccines News is so far!!! 2/2 how good is that? That's 100% so far, guys!! Grin So sucks boo and nerr nerr nerr to you Vaccine pessimists with your "I'm afraid"s and "sorry "s. Who's looking like the village idiots now? Eh? Eh?

Yeah. Going a bit loopy here in lockdown shielding mode. 🤪
