Great news about Moderna. Who’s preordered from that one?

TheKeatingFive · 16/11/2020 12:32

It’s absolutely brilliant to have a portfolio for many reasons. There may be significant differences in terms of efficacy for particular groups and/or ease of roll out.

Plus it indicates that Covid is not hugely challenging to vaccinate against.

Yes, really encouraging. I just heard someone on the radio saying that because they all act on the spike protein it's likely that many vaccines will be successful.

They're all doing a press release before publication, it will be interesting to see if AZ/Oxford do the same.

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 12:37

@MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet

Wow - it doesn't look like we've ordered any of that (if I've read the story correctly?) but what great news. I am now feeling anxious/pressure for Oxford/AstraZeneca.....!
Me too
sashagabadon · 16/11/2020 13:26

There was a lot of negative talk back in summer that we had never created a vaccine for a corona virus before implying we couldn’t for this one too. However that doesn’t seem to be the case at all if Covid 19 is a typical corona virus. I wonder if it therefore might be possible to vaccinate against the common cold in the future?
Not sure that is desirable or realistic with this new vaccine technology?
It would be interesting to see in future years if the common cold decreases with the Covid vaccine too ( or is it completely unrelated?)

Ninbuscl · 16/11/2020 13:51

Yes all the people who were adamant that we may never get a vaccine and we needed to just “get on with it” ! Turns out it was a good idea to try and minimise spread as vaccines were on their way

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 13:53

Yep. So many posts saying we’ve never made a vaccine for a coronavirus

Thank god they were wrong, I can say I did feel quite positive when listening to scientists throughout. Still feeling pressure re Oxford one so want it to get good results.

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 13:54

Although I do know it is a big deal for results to be this good, worth talking about

tobee · 16/11/2020 16:02

Monday seems to be the day for vaccine success stories!

Maybe it will always be a Monday!

In a few months time we'll be all blasé and going "oh Monday! Another successful vaccine! Isn't there any other news?!" Grin

Yep. All those "There's never going to be a vaccine. Sorry" from random internet 'experts'.
Jrobhatch29 · 16/11/2020 16:28

I'm not sure how to cope with all this good news Grin

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 16:29

Jr channel excess good vibes into Oxford one Grin

Iced yep at least this totally stops that conversation of doom!

Yes, the scientists always seemed quite positive, yet there were so many 'experts' on here that seemed to know better. Hmm
CornishYarg · 16/11/2020 17:27

All those "There's never going to be a vaccine. Sorry" from random internet 'experts'.

I definitely won't miss those posts. "Sorry, but my sister's neighbour's son's dog's previous owner works in this area and she said there's no way a successful vaccine can be developed, I'm afraid. Or if it can, it will take at least 10 years. Sorry."

And all the instant experts

"Well they've never found a virus for HIV/Sars/the common cold" said without any consideration of the context.

BlueBlancmange · 16/11/2020 17:36

I just can't understand why any one would prefer to think there would never be a vaccine.

Oooh yes, always with 'I'm afraid' and 'sorry', as if that makes the (utterly groundless) statements more true or authoritative.....grrrrrr!

Great news from Moderna today, and fingers crossed now for Ox/AZ.

Huge respect for the amazing scientists who've been working so hard on this.

I think a lot of people think that being pessimistic makes you somehow clever or superior. Granted, being blindly optimistic is silly but nothing wrong with cautious optimism based on facts.

I think the latest update is that we've just ordered some now but we won't get it until the spring...... even so, just knowing a vaccine is on it's way gives light at the end of the tunnel, doesn't it?
Ninbuscl · 16/11/2020 17:43

Exactly icedpurple I think you are right there with that assessment. I feel a bit tearful with all this good news. And so many likeminded people on here glad that we were right to be hopeful 👏

Agree. So thankful for these amazingly clever people.

Ninbuscl · 16/11/2020 17:45

Yes me too thankful for the scientists. I have a scientific degree myself but still can’t imagine how clever these people must be it’s amazing !

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 17:45

Me too

So grateful

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2020 17:48

This thread has been a bit of a sanity saver

I find the rest too aggressive and negative

tobee · 16/11/2020 17:48

There's been a lot of arses on Mumsnet since March, coming out of the woodwork and showing their full colours. Just loving to grind everyone down. Pretending to be so superior to everyone else with their bogus knowledge. Enjoying making everyone miserable. Must be sad, empty souls to get their jollies this way. When we need to look after each other. Not just against the physical effects of Covid and nothing else.
