Have just had the call and am going tomorrow. Very excited. Anyone else doing this?

Excuse the daily fail link but this is intriguing even though I can’t find anything else about it
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8891223/German-Pfizer-vaccine-ready-Oxford-AstraZeneca.html

Also intriguing is how pessimistic Kate Bingham is although I think it’s probably a better message than being overly optimistic. You don’t want people to think that this will all be over by Christmas!

That said when Dr Baxter talked to us all about the vaccine trials in a general sense, he said there was enormous optimism. He said he expected at least one vaccine to get the green light by very early 2021 and that a few could get there by the spring.
Although the novavax trial lasts a year it is hoped there will be enough information in the first quarter of 2021 to get it approved. He seems to have little doubt that it is safe and will work to some degree, just to what degree and for how long is the questions.

Actually if you google there are more very recent articles about the Pfizer vaccine news but all behind a paywall Angry

Looks like they are recruiting for more volunteers for this trial. I have just had an email about it.

pennee · 29/10/2020 17:29

Is anyone in a Wales trial who could help me please? I received a booking in telephone call last night and was told I would get a follow up email. The email hasn’t arrived and I need to check the date she’s given me as the day and date don’t seem to correspond. I need a telephone number, if there is one on the email, to contact them. I’ve tried the local research team at the clinic and they said it was the Cardiff team and would pass a message on. (Still not heard back)
Thanks

Woventabby · 29/10/2020 17:45

I had my first jab earlier in the week at a London hospital where 600 volunteers participate in the trial. My arm was slightly sore, but that was it. I was looked after really well, and thanked again and again by the staff there. I could feel some camaraderie among them, and there was a good vibe, a sense that they are all working towards something positive!

Daftapath · 29/10/2020 18:07

@pennee the same thing happened to me and I didn't receive an email either. Luckily I had an email address from having been sent paperwork to read through. Do you have similar? If not, could you call the hospital tomorrow and ask to be out through to someone?

Unfortunately I am not booked in to Cardiff

I’m booked into Wrexham so tried calling there.
I replied to the email telling me I was to expect a call and where the research centre is and still not heard back. It’s going well 😆

Torvean32 · 29/10/2020 21:03

Sorry @pennee, I'm in Scotland so can't help with a phone number. When i was booked i then got the email that had the first 3 appointment dates.
If you've still not heard tomorrow could you call back and ask for the number of the study centre where you will be seen.

My consultant told be similair to what yours did @Frazzled2207. I wonder if ppl will drop out of the study if an other vaccine is approved sooner.

Frazzled2207 · 29/10/2020 21:07

@Torvean32
Yes could happen. Although even if approved some of us (I’m healthy and 42) will probably be somewhere down the list of priority groups. According to some government sources we might not get it at all!

@pennee I’ve signed up to the Wrexham trial and not had an email either. I’m booked in for my first appointment on Monday afternoon (they rang me on Wed afternoon) but have no details. Was planning to try to sort it on my day off today.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 30/10/2020 07:29

The phone call I received was from a withheld number so it’s not possible to ring back.

I’m in the trial. My understanding, and I’m happy to be corrected, is that participation in a trial puts you into a priority group for the vaccine when /if it comes.

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 07:39

@JosephineDeBeauharnais
We were definitely not told that! That would be cool if so. We were told we would be unblinded If it became available, that’s all.
Obviously half of us will have already had it. And the other half could then join the queue.

OP posts:
andadietcoke · 30/10/2020 07:40

@JosephineDeBeauharnais fingers crossed! The lead investigator at my trial said he hoped that might happen, and it was something he was asking for but would know more further down the line. No guarantees by any stretch. Saying that though in the US participants are being paid $400 so hopefully Novavax would see it as a small price to pay to vaccinate the other 50%.

pennee · 30/10/2020 08:10

@Bearsbearsbears40 oh crikey. Glad it’s not just me then. If they would just confirm the appointment that would be something. I’m confident on the second appointment time and date but not the first.
I will ring the research centre itself again this morning and see.

pennee · 30/10/2020 08:18

@Bearsbearsbears40 it’s just arrived now. She’s booked me in for the wrong date as suspected!

Bearsbearsbears40 · 30/10/2020 08:33

@pennee yes I just had mine too, the second date they gave me on the phone is now the date of the first appointment and I have a random date for the second appointment. The lady who rang told me that she was about an hour into her job, so looks like an error in booking in the first appt. At least there’s a contact email. I might see if they need help from someone who can work the calendar!

pennee · 30/10/2020 08:44

@Bearsbearsbears40 ha, the computer was making a lot of “dinging” noises when she was on the phone and she said as you can hear the computer doesn’t like me 😀
But like you say at least we have a contact now.
Good luck 🤞

We (in Leeds) were told that if we got the placebo we will be offered the vaccine at the end of the study as a thank you for taking part.

In addition, if an alternative vaccine becomes available and we're eligible, if we want it, we can leave the study and find out our status. If we had the placebo we could have the available vaccine.

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 15:44

Another interesting article - no paywall. Novavax gets a mention!

I have also heard this rumour (that those of us given a placebo could be offered it) but not been told this directly. Perhaps I previously read it here though!

This would make more sense than what @JosephineDeBeauharnais is suggesting (being put in a priority group for any vaccine? given that novavax is not likely to be the first to get to the finish line). But happy to be corrected.

I've got my medical for this next month. Feels like I'm doing something useful.

andadietcoke · 30/10/2020 16:56

@Frazzled2207 I took @JosephineDeBeauharnais'S comment to be about Novavax rather than any vaccine. Fingers crossed either way though! When is your next dose? I'm going on Sunday.

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 16:56

yes perhaps that's what she meant. I am going on tuesday and I hope it to all take a bit less time than last as I have a busy day!

I'll report back. I think someone said 20 mins in and out!
