Looking like lockdown is on the cards, but my area likely won't be included.

Cotgrave is Rushcliffe, so wouldn't be included if based on the city boundary.

Nottingham city is a bit unusual in that large amounts of it aren't actually within the city boundaries. It's why the stats for all sorts of things look awful as you have the inner city areas without the suburbs to dilute the figures.

Thanks, Waffle

I'm a student at UoN living in Lenton and currently nearly everybody I know is self isolating, including myself. I just wanted to say please do try your best not to be angry at students; I don't know a single person who has been to a party since we all moved back. Everyone I know of has been following the rules and doing our absolute best to keep everyone around us safe with masks, hand sanitizer, social distancing etc. It's so disheartening for students to be making such huge sacrifices (along with everyone else in the country) and then feeling like we are being blamed for it by the government and by local residents on Facebook! It makes the awful situation that the whole country is going through just that little bit worse as we feel like we can't do anything right.

Jobs are so few and far between that many of us are really struggling for money, especially considering such a huge proportion of students work in hospitality which means their summer earnings have been massively reduced. I usually work full time hours as a waitress at weddings and have around £1500 saved by the end of the summer to help towards uni costs - this year I applied to every single job I could possibly find and still couldn't get any work, meaning I started the term £600 into my overdraft. This means I am £2100 worse off than I usually am this time of year - and I know lots of people in the same position. Now I am having to isolate because my housemate tested positive so am unable to do my usual work as a nanny/babysitter - it's not ideal!

I'm of course not trying to say that students are struggling more than anyone else, this is an awful situation for everybody and there are thousands of people worse off, but I just get so upset when I see people implying that it is because of students partying and being reckless that Nottingham's cases are increasing!

I'm praying that we won't see increases in hospitalisations and deaths and that the rise in cases is mostly among students who will be ill for a few days and recover and that the vulnerable people around the area won't suffer too much.

lilacmoon78 · 06/10/2020 23:18

Of course the increase of cases is due to the fact that 25% of the city's population have arrived back over the last 3 weeks or so from all over the country, but when I say try not to blame students I'm meaning that the huge majority of us are following all the laws and guidelines and not having or attending parties! The majority of the people I know who have fallen ill with Covid caught it from going to work (e.g. 20+ staff members of Mooch, the UoN bar, are currently isolating), volunteering with the SU Welcome Week team to help freshers settle in, or from their housemates.

middleager · 06/10/2020 23:26

I'm in a local restrictions area (Birmingham) and the only restriction is you can't mix with other households in your house/garden or theirs. They relaxed the rules for grandparents who need to look after kids/do the school run.

You can, however, meet them in a busy pub or restaurant.

I know many who either don't know the rules or don't care.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 01:28

I think you can still travel. My friend is in Liverpool and their tourist information is still telling people to come.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/10/2020 06:39

BBC news has just said they are currently considering which local authority areas are going to be included - indicating it will be more than just the city council areas.

JacobReesMogadishu · 07/10/2020 07:33

So it seems the numbers have gone up because the university are running an asymptomatic testing programme.

Which suggests two things.....that firstly the rates in nottingham are unlikely to be higher than other places. If other places did asymptomatic testing they’d find the same.

That secondly for the majority of people they won’t know they have it. I think 80% of students at Newcastle we’re asymptomatic.

So nottingham are looking like they’re going to have a lock down and kill off small businesses for a virus’s which 80% of people won’t know they have it and only about 0.5% of the other 20% will die from?

Marmaladecake · 07/10/2020 07:54

Lilacmoon78 I just feel so terribly sorry for the students, what an awful time you must be having. Please don't think everyone is blaming you. I hope you stay well.

picklemewalnuts · 07/10/2020 08:05

Lilac I'm sorry this is hitting students so hard. I'm angry that so little thought was put into bringing you all back from all across the country, to live in confined spaces with shared facilities. It was inevitable, and any socialising that happened was just the last straw.

I'm cross that so little thought was put into supporting you all when you have to self isolate. I'm cross that you are paying around 9k fees each year, plus huge living costs, for what is inevitably a pared down student experience.

Many student courses could have been delivered virtually this year, allowing accommodation to be less densely packed.

The finances of universities make no sense.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2020 08:20

My area of Lenton is pretty quiet usually anyway. But I haven't seen any students breaking the rules. There were no big groups in the Rose and crown the other day. From the email that NUH sent out yesterday. It looks like it could be announced any minute.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/10/2020 08:23

I've just spoken to a client who has been told it is likely to be announced today.

LittleMissLockdown · 07/10/2020 08:27

How are these things usually announced? I've had a quick Google and can't see any dedicated website or twitter page etc? I have family in Notts so just wanted to oeep an eye out, is it best to just to keep checking the local news sites?

PleasantVille · 07/10/2020 08:37
@PleasantVille we can probably still travel but if we can't meet indoors then I can't see my dad as he is housebound. Not sure if only being able to see my mum would make it better or worse. My daughter is nearly 2 and they've only ween her on a screen for the last 10 months, they are missing all her growing up...
Again just based on my family experience but whether you can meet inside depends on where you are not where you've come from so they can come ino my home but I can't go theres. Unless they have misunderstood their restrictions that's what they are going by.

Is that what you mean?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/10/2020 08:38

I think they're often announced on Twitter, maybe the council page or the mayor's page?

custardbear · 07/10/2020 08:43

I'm in west bridgford and work at UoN (wfh thankfully!) I'm in two minds, may be better if we do go into some sort of lock down ... albeit we've got a trip away booked in half term up in the lakes 🙁

violetfern · 07/10/2020 08:47

I wonder how much the university’s asymptomatic testing programme has influenced this? More research needed but until we know at how long PCR tests remain positive for example could some students be forced to isolate when they may not necessarily need to? Should this testing programme which isn’t happening nationally lead to local lockdown restrictions sanctioned by the government? 🤷🏻‍♀️ And I don’t think certainly that all students are acting irresponsibly, Lilac I have such sympathy for you and those in a similar situation. Surely the government knew this was going to happen...

jackstini · 07/10/2020 08:48

Thanks @FATEdestiny - that page is really useful

I'm under Ashfield here so low at the moment, but niece is at Trent Uni so worried about her

WaffleCash · 07/10/2020 08:49

I'm expecting it to be city only. And then also expecting loads of people complaining about wealthier areas such as West Bridgford avoiding it despite high numbers as some sort of conspiracy when in fact it's just geographic boundaries

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/10/2020 08:54

They had the public health director from the City Council on the news this morning and she was talking about the other local authorities in the Nottingham area so it really doesn't sound like it just going to be restricted to Nottingham City. if you look at the map West Bridgford is very dark (high cases) and so Rushcliffe is likely to be included

WaffleCash · 07/10/2020 08:58

I've not been following too much, but have other local lockdowns always been on a district basis, or have some been at electoral ward level? Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling all extend a long way from Nottingham.

violetfern · 07/10/2020 09:00

Sorry brain not in gear and hadn’t registered you’d already mentioned this when I posted 🤦🏻‍♀️
HasaDigaEebowai · 07/10/2020 09:03

Broxtowe, Rushcliffe and Gedling all extend a long way from Nottingham.

Yes it would bring in loads of outlying villages if they were blanket restrictions for the borough

Feellikedancingyeah · 07/10/2020 10:09

Tbh it's really quiet here in Sheffield. I am in the heart of the University area and very few students out and about

Alwaysfrank · 07/10/2020 10:10

My second year ds at UofN has just tested positive. Last week he said he couldn't understand why Nottingham was not a hotspot as he knew so many people who had tested positive (all with cold like symptoms, nothing worse). Turns out it would have been if the data had been correct Hmm

He personally has barely seen anyone, and hasn't broken any rules. He went out as a group of 6, 4 of whom (living in same house as each other) tested positive a few days later, so that's probably where he got it. He had a slight runny nose then a very brief loss of taste/smell. Rest of his household are all fine but could well have it asymptomatically, it is a very small house.
