It is very misleading of the Government to refer to positive test results as "cases" - they are not "cases".
- The PCR test is a screening test - not a diagnostic test.
- The rate of false positives has been estimated as possibly as high as 90%
- Increased testing means that there will be an increase in positive results - but it is impossible to know whether there has been a significant increase in people who actually have Covid-19, let alone a "rapid rise".
The missing information to get a more accurate estimate of the real prevalence of Covid-19 is the expected rates of false positives and negatives from PCR testing.
However, the false positives will likely highly outnumber the false negatives.
This can be estimated from the fact that rises in hospital admissions for Covid-19, of ITU admissions for Covid-19 and deaths from Covid-19 are not showing anything like the same pattern of increase.
Taking into account the time-lags between infection, appearance of symptoms, etc. the figures only make sense if a high level of false positives is assumed.
The Government needs to publish the information that would enable a much more accurate estimate of the actual prevalence of Covid-19.
They also need to stop calling positive test results "cases", so that people who have tested positive without symptoms are not falsely reassured into thinking that they have "had Covid" and are now immune.
If you get a positive result, it is possible that you have Covid-19, maybe just a 1 in 10 chance that you have Covid according to some estimates.
Please see this Petition asking the Government to release information about the rate of false positives and negatives from PCR Pillar 2 testing - without this information the "case" numbers published by Government are likely to be wildly misleading:
