Corona virus is the 24th cause of death in this country.

We are not reacting this way to the other 23.

Locking healthy people up is insane.

OP posts:
Drowninginwashing · 28/09/2020 17:15

... or maybe it's only 24th BECAUSE of lockdown...

Pachonga · 28/09/2020 17:17

Where would it be on the list if we hadn’t locked down?

Eckhart · 28/09/2020 17:20

But lockdown actually, factually, worked. Coming out of lockdown (ie where we are now) is going to take some trial and error.

Flaxmeadow · 28/09/2020 17:26

What do you think would have happened without lockdown?

MsWarrensProfession · 28/09/2020 17:26

In weeks 16 and 17 of 2020, when the people who were infected immediately prior to the initial lockdown were succumbing to the disease, not only was Covid 19 the leading cause of death in the UK, it was probably killing more people than every other cause combined. Now it’s not.

I’m failing to see your reasoning OP.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/09/2020 17:28

It isn't working in two ways. First it postpones the problem to another time (if cases go down)

Secondly in many cases they don't fall, or not by much. Look at the local lockdowns in the UK. those areas did not have sufficient falls in the main UK lockdown, and not cases are continuing to rise, despite restrictions.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/09/2020 17:30

If coronavirus continued to be the leading cause of death following the lockdown you would have a point, which you don't.

annabel85 · 28/09/2020 17:31

Lockdown does NOT work

Corona virus is the 24th cause of death in this country.

Are you really that daft? If it was near the top then lockdown doesn't work.

You can disagree with it, but it works.

MummyPop00 · 28/09/2020 17:32

Lockdowns don’t work in terms of virus’ eradication that’s true.

What lockdowns do, depending on your viewpoint is buy time for science to come up with a solution or kick the can down the road & delay the inevitable.

mamamia2020 · 28/09/2020 17:35

I think you misunderstand the purpose of a lockdown. The lockdown was supposed to achieve two things.

The first was to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed, this was achieved.

The second purpose of the lockdown, as in all countries, is to pause and slow down the spread of the virus. The time in lockdown is then supposed to be used by governments to put in place effective track and trace schemes. This should enable governments to extinguish 'fires' as they erupt.

This is where the UK Government has failed. Other countries used their lockdown time to put effective track and trace processes in place and many are succeeding. The UK Government has taken far to long in achieving this, outsourcing to Serco and best chum, Dido Harding.

The lockdown did exactly what it was supposed to do. The problem was we were not prepared for coming out of it.

Mum2threejs · 28/09/2020 17:36

Nationwide lockdown worked, it brought the numbers of infections, hospitalisations and deaths down by reducing the r number. The new local lockdowns are not as effective as there not “hard” lockdowns. People in local lockdowns still go to work school, the pub and on holiday.

ShouldWeChangeTheBulb · 28/09/2020 17:37

Local lockdowns aren’t working because no one is adhering to them. The national look down we had works very well. We likely avoided thousands of deaths.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 28/09/2020 17:39

Of course it worked. It reduced the numbers who caught it which was all it was ever intended to do. What did you think would happen? The virus would magically disappear?

Popcornriver · 28/09/2020 17:42

OP please find some evidence that deaths wouldn't have spiralled even more than they did without the strict lockdown in March and I'll believe you.

Pachonga · 28/09/2020 17:49

Just because you personally are inconvenienced by lockdown or partial lockdown, doesn’t mean they are not effective

AriettyHomily · 28/09/2020 17:52

Lockdown DOES work but as soon as you come out CV is still there. Lockdown won't make it go away.

DamitJanet · 28/09/2020 17:52

Are you trying to prove that they don’t work to suppress cases/deaths by telling us how cases/deaths are suppressed following lockdown?

CoffeeandCroissant · 28/09/2020 18:12

How on earth is cherry picking the month with the lowest deaths following a lockdown evidence that lockdowns don't work? If anything it suggests the opposite!

But in case you need any more proof that lockdowns and suppression measures do work:

nber.org/papers/w26906

Or just look on ourworldindata at how the case number curves fell in the UK, Italy, Spain etc in March, April after their peaks.

By the way, Covid-19 is on course to be the third leading cause of death in the USA this year, after cardiac disease and cancer, and that's with suppression measures.

As others have said, lockdown isn't intended to eliminate Covid-19 (unless you go full Wuhan), but to suppress it and bend the curve, allowing healthcare services to cope and to provide time to enable setting up of adequate testing, tracking and tracing systems. It was also a measure of last resort when the UK had lost control of rapidly growing case numbers and didn't yet have adequate test, track and trace procedures in place.

Varjakpaw · 28/09/2020 18:14

It suggests exactly the opposite.

lunar1 · 28/09/2020 18:18

What doesn't work is pretending schools as they are right now are safe. Pretending that children don't pass on covid and that we should reduce testing in children.

What we need is the same attitude to school as has been shown to the economy. We need to throw money at it so that children can be socially distancing inside and we have to accept that there needs to be changes.

School pupils and staff need the same weekly testing we have in care homes.

BatShite · 28/09/2020 18:22

Lockdown works as a pause button, not much else. But I dont think it was originally supposed to be anything else. It was about flattening the curve to let the NHS cope. The 'people are still getting it!!!!' people..just don't understand the point of lockdown and seem to think it can/should go on indefinitely because even one person is still ill.

CoffeeandCroissant · 28/09/2020 18:23

Corona virus is the 24th cause of death in this country.

But only for the month of August! (which is the month with the lowest number of deaths since the April peak, having declined gradually over those 5 months to reach the August low.)

gypsywater · 28/09/2020 18:24

Causality OP, causality. Worth learning about.

Chloemol · 28/09/2020 18:29

Here we go round the mulberry bush, again

CrunchyNutNC · 28/09/2020 18:30

Please go off and stir up trouble somewhere else OP.
