Being denied entry because you dont have the track and trace app?

Rudolphian · 27/09/2020 18:54

I haven't downloaded the app due to personal reasons.
I have started hearing stories about people being denied entry to pubs/ restaurants and cafes because they havent got the app.
Is this true?
Now I'm wondering what I'd do if it came into work, or if I'm told its compulsory to have to go to the supermarket?
Pretty sure its not a legal requirement yet.

For those that refuse to give details - I think you will soon run out of places to go. I think most sensibly minded folk would rather go to a place that insists on the rules over somewhere that doesn't.
Because sitting indoors in a restaurant or pub that is happy to wave you through with other like-minded/potentially covid infested people - sounds a great place to go Hmm
I wonder what other hygiene rules they are breaking?
No thanks.

Riceandpoppadoms · 28/09/2020 09:44

Of course companies are not going to support systems from years ago
I got my iphone less than 2 years ago, but it wasn't the latest version then, but it is by no means outdated, just not the right OS.

I may have missed it but people are not refusing to give details, they are happy to do so using good old fashioned pen and paper.

All people are asking is that venues allow this option as directed by the Government guidance instead of insisting on everyone using an exclusionary app and pretending its the law.

At this stage of the thread, people are not talking about being unwilling to give contact details, they are talking about not being able to download the app.
Riceandpoppadoms · 28/09/2020 09:46

Or the app being used inappropriately and incorrectly in my case.

And I am still in contract for another year so I can't upgrade, even if I wanted to!
GeologyRox · 28/09/2020 09:50

Geez the tantrums because people are being asked to cooperate during this to try and keep things going on some level for the good of everyone.
No one has the God given right to go into anywhere, you are going to a pub or restaurant because you want to, no one's got a gun to your head making you do it. Perhaps if people had taken the initial track and trace seriously and not left lists of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse visiting these places thinking they're clever and edgy and bucking the system then places would be more inclined to do the QR code and the paper track and trace too.
Honestly the virus does not give a flying fuck how clever and edgy you are because you've decided that your 'rights' to go into a particular place to enjoy yourself supercedes any responsibility you have as a member of society to do what's being asked. The answer is simple, if you don't like it then don't go, no one's forcing you to.

HunkyPunk · 28/09/2020 09:51

Indeed, that's because they want you to upgrade every couple of years, like the games console manufacturers. It's called built-in obsolescence. So where does that leave people who can't afford to do that? Confused

No one is throwing a tantrum. I and others are happy to download the app but unfortunately our phones are not compatible.

Therefore rather reasonably we would like restaurants and other venues to allow us to use paper forms that the Government guidance says are an acceptable alternative. If that's the definition of throwing a tantrum then I obviously missed the update... Confused

I’ve actually got a fairly old Samsung android phone and I downloaded the app in a few minutes. You don’t need an expensive top of the range mobile phone to do it.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/09/2020 10:02

Yes that is true for registering by paper and always has been since they started it . Using the app each person registers.

Sorry @VivaMiltonKeynes I think there was some confusion. A post upthread talked about how long it takes for 6 people to give their details using pen and paper.

GeologyRox · 28/09/2020 10:02

If a venue doesn't want to, or has had issues with the paper system before (as I put in the rest of my post) and has chosen not to use it, then that's their call and not yours.
When they're the ones facing the concequences of other people not cooperating they have the right to make that call.
If you don't have the ability to use the QR code, you don't use that particular place, it's hardly a life changing and devastating life event.
Venues don't take this seriously? They stand to lose a hell of a lot more than an afternoon out, loss of jobs, business and beyond.
But perhaps if people just keep whining it's not fair then all this will go away.

It doesn't matter if you can download it onto a reasonably old, cheap Samsung though. If you already have a perfectly functioning mobile you're not going to get a different one just because it supports the app, no matter how cheap it is. Especially when there is a perfectly reasonable alternative option for leaving your details.

I despair!!! I'm seeing some good friends still suffering from the debilitating effects of COVID that they got back in April. I can't visit my 94 year old mum with dementia because her nursing home is still isolated. Small businesses are closing all over the country, people struggling to pay their rent and keep a roof over their head and mumsnetters are bleating on about their human rights - open your eyes!!
thecatsatonthewall · 28/09/2020 10:10

I think by the time people have had to isolate without being ill and losing 2 weeks pay, this app will v quickly be uninstalled.

Testing is the way out of this, not an app or curfews but we need trust restored in Govt, which is sadly lacking.

GeologyRox · 28/09/2020 10:12

I'm a bit confused by your response to my post. Why do you "despair"?
The point of my post is very similar to yours!

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 28/09/2020 10:12

I hope all those businesses that are refusing paying customers because they can’t download the app are not taking advantage of the furlough money...

GeologyRox · 28/09/2020 10:13

my previous post was for @Sundaypolodog

eaglejulesk · 28/09/2020 10:13

It takes SO long!! If there is a group of six doing this, it's not very fair on all the people queuing behind them is it?

Most of the forms here only ask for your name and a contact phone number and the time you enter the building, it doesn't take that long - and most people use their phones, so out of a group of six it would be unusual for all to be doing it manually.

tornadoalley · 28/09/2020 10:14

Can't be the case as lots of people have phones too old to download the app to.

Fine by me.

Not so fine for places that are desperate for my money.

shrug

RedToothBrush · 28/09/2020 10:16

Not that the app protects you mind...

... As ive said before i do love this magic bullet thinking that suggests that if you use the app you are safe.

LondonJax · 28/09/2020 10:16

They had a techno person on the radio last week when this launched. She was saying her phone was too old to download the new app! Out of 4 friends I'm the only one who has managed to download the app - one of my friends has a phone that's younger than mine!

Before this came out we went out for a couple of meals. We filled in an on line form to book so, when we turned up, we hand nothing to complete as the booking had all the information.

The hospitality industry are saying they are on their knees at the moment - well turning away three of my friends because they can't get the app to download would be a very stupid thing to do in that case wouldn't it? Asking them to complete a paper form as an alternative means they can still serve them.

If particular restaurants only want to use the app, that's fine. They won't be in business for long if my friends experience of the download is normal throughout the country. Given the choice between upgrading a phone just to be able to get an app downloaded or finding a restaurant that uses a little common sense I can see a few closed signs going up in the next few months. Owners need to use a few more brain cells in some cases.

They're only required to take the details of one person from each group of up to six people.

Not of you. I agree with your post Having read this thread, I despair of some mumsnetters
