Being denied entry because you dont have the track and trace app?

Rudolphian · 27/09/2020 18:54

I haven't downloaded the app due to personal reasons.
I have started hearing stories about people being denied entry to pubs/ restaurants and cafes because they havent got the app.
Is this true?
Now I'm wondering what I'd do if it came into work, or if I'm told its compulsory to have to go to the supermarket?
Pretty sure its not a legal requirement yet.

@keeprocking

I'm 72, what's an app? That would be my reply!
Really?
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/09/2020 09:09

I've been wondering if there's any reason those who object to the app couldn't download it to enter an establishment which requires it, then immediately delete it again?

That’s what I intend to do if somewhere requires it that I really need/want to go. Either that or I’ll just turn off contact tracing.

@Riceandpoppadoms

My DC's sports club says I have to scan my own app when the DC enter the building.

Firstly this seems misuse of the app - surely we shouldn't be using it by proxy for our DC.

Secondly, a sports centre with lots of separate facilities could give a positive alert for someone in the gym that will affect everyone in the building, from those playing badminton in the sports hall to those in the swimming pool. Then no-one can scan again for 2 weeks for no reason.

Thirdly, the parents aren't even allowed in the building. How does it work if I scan to let DC into the building, then go and sit in the car 100 metres away? Plus then I am sitting in the car for 1 hour. What about the parent sitting in their car next door - if they get a positive test do I get told to isolate even though we have been sitting in separate sealed cars?

And all the people inside the sports centre who will get an alert if I test positive - yet I've never even been inside the sports centre. Am I right to think this is stupid and a misuse of the app and won't work properly.

Ffs everyone just download the bloody app and stop acting so entitled. Those that are refusing are just making pathetic excuses just because they refuse to be told what to do. How childish, just grow up and do the right thing...we are all in this together, no exceptions and no excuses.

Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 28/09/2020 09:16

This to be honest seems typical of the British mentality at the moment. won't wear a mask because of reasons won't download the app because of reasons. Won't self isolate because of reasons. Seriously we are currently the most ridiculous lot who only seem to think about themselves and think the rules and guidelines don't apply to them. I bet these people will be the first to blame the government over its handling of covid. I think it is perfectly reasonable to require the app to be downloaded. Incidentally the original app the government started but cancelled took such a beating over, both on here and the media would have worked with more devices.

I wear a mask despite suffering panic when I wear it sometimes.
I have downloaded the app.
I will social distance and follow the rules and guidelines.
I do this because I want to be a responsible member of society during the pandemic.

Thank you for being a responsible member of society and doing the right thing. It’s a shame everyone doesn’t have the same mentality.

I'll PM you my mother's address then, you pop round and give her a brand new phone, teach her how to use it and install the app for her. She's in her 90s, hates technology and has early stages of dementia. Oh and you aren't allowed into the building to visit her - sure you will have no problems managing to sort out how entitled she is being Biscuit

Alternatively fuck off as you don't know what you are talking about. No exceptions or excuses my arse.

Racoonworld · 28/09/2020 09:28

@Ilovemypantry my iPhone doesn’t either. The app needs the latest operating system, but my iPhone is too old to get the latest operating system. I’m not buying a new phone when mine works perfectly well for all other things. I went to a restaurant yesterday and was allowed in without the app, they had a paper trail version as an alternative for people who didn’t have it.

Racoonworld · 28/09/2020 09:30

And I do everything else, mask wearing, social distancing etc. I wanted the app but can’t have it.

Riceandpoppadoms · 28/09/2020 09:30

Is it possible to download these in advance - i.e. is there one standard form? So I don't have to linger and fill in at receptions etc? Then can fill it out in advance and just drop off when entering?
Would seem a sensible idea.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 28/09/2020 09:30

If it's anything like the Scottish version, you need a fairly new iPhone for it to work. I have a few friends whose phones are incompatible.

My phone (not an iphone) isn't supported either but as it does everything I require of a phone, I'm not willing to buy a new phone purely for the app when I'm perfectly capable of writing down my name & phone number.

Riceandpoppadoms · 28/09/2020 09:31

Also my problems with sports centres wanting you to scan on behalf of your DC when you are not even entering the building is made worse when I have a slightly older iphone that doesn't have the right operating system. I am just sitting in the car park in a sealed car for an hour.

Requinblanc · 28/09/2020 09:31

This is not a legal requirement...

I pointed that out when I went out to a restaurant with a friend in Soho, London, on Saturday. Instead we left our names and contact details.

I am not downloading this. I have a crappy mobile to start with and I am not even sure it would work and I don't trust the private company that put it together.

The app and leaving your contact details are two different issues...

TheElementsOfMedical · 28/09/2020 09:32

JFC 🙄

Racoonworld · 28/09/2020 09:33

I’m not sure, they just had one log type form which they wrote everyone’s details in. I’m not sure a downloadable form would work as many people don’t have printers so there would still be issues with people not having access to firms, and also staff having to touch multiple forms and spending time collating them all into one. An online form that you fill in ahead of going could work though!

That must be because no-one you know is sufficiently behind the times to have a 5s, then Grin. As I said in my post, it's ancient. However, it works perfectly well and supports many apps, but not this one. Was also mightily pissed off when my banking app upgraded and I stopped being able to use that Angry

TheWindOnTheMoon · 28/09/2020 09:35

I downloaded the app last night and, since then, have noticed my phone's battery is draining down very quickly. I switched off contact tracing as I'm at home and will only have that on when I go out, but still it's not going to work if my phone's battery drains fast whilst I'm out Hmm

Yes that is true for registering by paper and always has been since they started it . Using the app each person registers.

VivaMiltonKeynes · 28/09/2020 09:38

@FippertyGibbett

I scanned my phone the other day in a restaurant but I didn’t need an app.
That's their own personal one that some places are using and often it takes you to their menu as well .

Of course companies are not going to support systems from years ago Confused .

I haven’t heard of an iPhone not supporting the app?

It's literally been all across the news media. The government have acknowledged the issue. The Android app covers most smartphones going back a number of years, but an awful lot of iPhones in current use are not supported. it doesn't help the matter that iPhones are more expensive than Android, so people might keep them longer and/or buy them second-hand when they're a couple of years old if they can't afford (or don't want to pay the price for) a brand new one.

The government (along with certain people on this thread) don't seem to understand that many people aren't just being difficult by not buying everything brand new each year or two - many of us can only afford to buy used and/or keep expensive things until they're completely used up and worn out.

The car scrappage scheme from a few years ago was a perfect example of this, whereby people with a car worth a grand were expected to be in a position to swap it for a new £25K one if half the VAT on it were effectively waived. They're doing it again now with urging us all to trade in our trusty old petrol and diesel cars for electric ones for the sake of the environment and I really don't think it's crossed their mind that, when people say they're too expensive, they don't mean that they're tight and they'd rather keep all of that money in their bank; they simply don't have it in the first place.

LangClegsInSpace · 28/09/2020 09:40

Venues will very soon realise that the majority of people won't use the app. Take up has been low in pretty much all countries except China and South Korea.

Riceandpoppadoms · 28/09/2020 09:42

I would be perfectly happy to stay home until next spring (always worked from WFH as SE), but now I am encountering this sports centre problem when taking DC to sports centre. I don't have a modern enough phone and I am not mixing with anyone sitting in my car. My DC are only mixing with limited people in their area of the sports centre (very few, completely manageable by the club if anyone were to test positive). I am more likely to get an alert from sitting next to someone in the next car for 1 hour.
