People STILL not wearing masks on London buses

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 14:09

I had to take a journey by bus earlier. There were about 10 people on the bus, three of whom were not wearing masks. Drivers need to stop letting people on without masks - these selfish passengers are putting everyone else’s lives at risk! Sad

@caringcarer

People who can't wear a mask should wear a vizor. In other countries no exemptions are made you wear a mask or if caught without one get a fine.

I agree no mask or vizor no journey on public transport.

I feel sorry for drivers. If they refuse people without masks to get on bus they get attacked.

What's the point of wearing a visor?

Masks do a bit of good (but they really are not a magic bullet). Visors are totally ineffective.

Which countries are you talking about and what do you know about disability rights more generally in those countries?

HeIenaDove · 27/09/2020 18:55

I wasnt having a dig at parets @ChardonnaysPetDragon I was pointing out that disabled ppl were being seen as one mass. You are still sore because of what happened on a previous thread when i pointed out that ppl on low incomes should be getting masks supplied to them (by the Gov) and despite you being gung ho about mask wear your reply was
"You think people should get them for free?"

It was very telling.

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 18:58

Visors are totally ineffective.

My dentist plus a consultant I saw in hospital a few months ago were both wearing visors. Surely medical staff wouldn’t bother wearing them if they were totally pointless?

@Akire

I do wonder after this is over if the Government will plunge money and research into major studies on amount of people who have had PTSD or Trauma that previously the medical profession had no idea about.

Ditto all the breathing difficulties in the population compared to other similar sized countries.

Interesting, yes it appears to be an epidemic!

And the disproportionate amount of people who appear to be exempt for whatever reason in our country compared to other countries indicate that not all are genuine.

This is not fair on the people who have genuine reasons for not wearing one, so maybe an exemption card is the answer.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/09/2020 19:02

No, I don’t think masks should be free, because that will lead to a big waste and will damage the environment. Make some, buy some reusable masks and be done with it.

Why would I be sore about it? I think your devotion to my posts is quite touching, really.

I can't wear a mask or a visor.

Should I stay at home permanently, not go to work, not go to medical appointments?

PennyDreadfuI · 27/09/2020 19:04

Oh, and visors alone are absolutely useless. All they do is protect the wearer from splashes/large droplets - no use against viruses, and they offer no protection whatsoever to others.

Medical staff wear them to protect against large droplets and splashes. Have you seen a dentist's visor after they've done a filling?

What they're not using them for is to protect against viruses.

HeIenaDove · 27/09/2020 19:06

Italy is providing them for free
Japan have cooling masks for hot weather available in vending machines.

UK ...........make a mask out of an old sock.

Race to the bottom.

I use disposables because i find them better. But i dispose of them at home , i dont throw them all over the street.

Hyperion100 · 27/09/2020 19:08

I witnessed a guy on my train take his mask off to sneeze then put it back on after.

Humanity truly deserves all thats coming to it.

Caring about the environment? How 2019.

Surely cloth ones (i.e. non-disposable) aren’t so damaging to the environment though?

But surely the vending machines sell the masks?

Hmm

And you don't need to use an old sock, new fabric would be preferable, or maybe even a new sock. As you said, it doesn't need to be a race to the bottom.

The pandemic of Judgy Sanctimony is here to stay.

Absolutely, but only if they are used properly and actually reused.

Yep.
SheepandCow · 27/09/2020 19:13

@PennyDreadfuI
This is why we should've done what Australia and New Zealand did. Contained the virus. We need to urgently take measures to do just that. The sooner we do, the sooner we can all return to a proper normality - including no need for masks.

In the meantime, it's unfortunate but we have two conflicting groups. Vulnerable disabled people who are at increased risk of dying from Covid vs a small number of disabled people who genuinely can't wear masks. Add in that everyone is at risk from Covid because of the risk of Long Covid and what do we do? What do you think is the fairest solution? Needs of the majority including most disabled people (and the economy) over a very small minority, just short-term? Taking into account that the sooner we tackle Covid and contain the spread, the quicker things return to normality.

So whats so wrong with Wanksock distributing those masks he bought for the NHS to use to low income homes. They arent suitable for the NHS because they have ear loops (like the ones on sale to the general public) so should be fine to distribute. Easy to locate low income families via DWP records so shouldnt be hard. That way he hasnt spunked all that dosh up the wall for them all for nothing.

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/09/2020 19:17

Whats fascinating is that those accusing others of being judgy are the most judgemental.

That's an excellent idea. Or give them to food banks, refuges, schools to hand out.

Italy learned from March/April. A shame we couldn't have done the same.

Twas ever thus.
Brockwell · 27/09/2020 19:21

Transport worker in London here.

Bus drivers and other frontline personnel can request/advise but not enforce.

We have no legal power to stop a person boarding the bus/train/tube etc.

The public know this. They know only a police officer can issue a fine.

Tube staff have an app to report non-compliance as antisocial behaviour but really, it's only a data collection tool to ascertain where the hotspots are and to deploy police accordingly.

I am fed up of explaining this to people who haven't read the regulations

onedayinthefuture · 27/09/2020 19:21

Maybe stop using public transport? Thank god I have a car.

It isn’t always feasible to drive everywhere in London

How so?

I really don't see what's judgemental about asking people to give those without masks the benefit of the doubt and to not abuse, berate or humiliate them.
