People STILL not wearing masks on London buses

579 replies

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 14:09

I had to take a journey by bus earlier. There were about 10 people on the bus, three of whom were not wearing masks. Drivers need to stop letting people on without masks - these selfish passengers are putting everyone else’s lives at risk! Sad

Some people cannot wear masks
We need to work out what happened in the UK. Was it something in the water? Why are there so many more of these people in the UK than elsewhere?

Akire · 27/09/2020 17:34

Think for me, I’ve been in shops where 4/10 people are not wearing masks. At least if we had proper research and guidance that actual 30% of people really are exempt it will make it easy for them. Plus it helps the rest of us who are struggling with wearing masks to see that mast majority of non mask wears really can’t. This is new thing for all us. It’s nit unreasonable for people to think many more people could wear them.

While of course some can’t, it’s naive to argue that 20million people in the county are to ill to wear them either.

RegularHumanBartender · 27/09/2020 17:34

Those with genuine exemptions are in a tiny minority. I’ve seen a couple of people over the past 3 months with lanyards on which identifies the exemption

It doesn't identify the exemption at all. Shall I attach a picture of my husbands exemption card and lanyard? You have no right to the medical business of other people. Honestly, if you are that scared then YOU stay at home. The fucking disabilsm on these threads is sickening.

PennyDreadfuI · 27/09/2020 17:34

@Oliversmumsarmy

Oh great another opinionated idiot with no empathy who thinks those with exemptions should all lock themselves away and never go out

Dd was on the tube a few day’s ago and of all the people not wearing a mask, not one was exempt.

She knows this because the police came onto her carriage and handed out fines for those not wearing a mask and not having an exemption.

Just because a person isn’t wearing a mask doesn’t mean they are exempt. They could just be entitled a**holes

Did they all tell the police they weren't exempt? Did the police ask for proof? What exactly happened?
custard6543 · 27/09/2020 17:34

You cant tell who is or isn't and therefore unless there is a 100% fool proof method developed by the Government then it's not up to the poor driver to make the decision on who they permit onto the bus.

Well there should be a fool proof method, because until then selfish idiots who aren’t exempt will continue to get on the bus without a mask and put other people’s lives at risk - including those with genuine health conditions who are particularly vulnerable.

And don’t tell me that every single person in London not wearing a mask is exempt. Honestly, some people on here are so naive Hmm

I dont recall as much concern for disabled people to be able to get around when they were losing their DLA/PIP/ Motability.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 27/09/2020 17:36

I'm so sick of 'if I can make the effort, so can you' bollocks. Some people cannot wear masks. The end

Yep. And plenty of people can wear masks but don’t. Also the end.
It’s a never-ending argument in the current shitshow in which we find ourselves 🤷‍♀️

@RegularHumanBartender
Which type of disableism?
The one saying the millions of vulnerable disabled people at increased risk from Covid should stay at home or risk their lives unnecessarily because people aren't wearing masks?

PennyDreadfuI · 27/09/2020 17:37

There are 16 million people living with disabilities in the UK. One in four people will suffer PTSD at some point in their lives, a proportion as a result of rape or DV. Many millions live with health conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, severe skin conditions, respiratory conditions and so on. There are millions of people with sensory issues or autism.

Is it so difficult to imagine that out of such huge numbers of people, a large proportion will be exempt, and yes, that will run into the many millions?

loulouljh · 27/09/2020 17:38

Good for them!!!!!

bengalcat · 27/09/2020 17:38

I try and sit as far away from others as possible , upstairs tends to be less crowded and tend to open the window if not already open when on a bus . Social distancing even in a mask is still important . I tend to be less concerned with what others do and don’t do and look to protecting myself as far as I can .

Underhisi · 27/09/2020 17:38

"I can’t believe people are still trotting out the “if you don’t like a mask you won’t like a ventilator” nonsense"

It does provide the important information that they don't have a brain.

TinySleepThief · 27/09/2020 17:39

I don't think anyones said everyone not wearing a mask in London is exempt, we're merely pointing out you have no idea if those 3 people were.

No excuse for people to become aggressive towards and abuse those who are maskless though, is it. This has happened to me more times than I can count now.
SheepandCow · 27/09/2020 17:41

@HeIenaDove

I dont recall as much concern for disabled people to be able to get around when they were losing their DLA/PIP/ Motability.
That's because too few genuinely care about disabled people. Still now most people aren't aware that disproportionate numbers of disabled people died during the first wave. The media don't seem bothered. Most people also seem unaware that not all care home residents are elderly.

And look at all the posts across threads saying (incorrectly) that Covid is 'only' a risk to The Others aka The Vulnerable aka The Disabled.

HeresMe · 27/09/2020 17:42

I wear a mask but I will fight for those who cannot. It's disgusting how people are being treated.

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 17:44

No, but YOU have no idea if they were either. Also see my clarification above.

Some people are awful full stop. Flip side - certainly based on what I saw today - is that the young men not wearing masks on public transport know full well that people won’t challenge them, so they continue to behave selfishly. I would happily put money on them not being exempt

Chestergirl39 · 27/09/2020 17:45

@HeIenaDove
“The woman who confronted Alice cant have been that worried about Covid or she wouldnt have got so close.”

How can you have sympathy for one person feeling stressed and anxious (the lady who didn’t wear the mask), but have no sympathy for the other lady who could have been feeling the same way! Obviously it’s not a rational response by a calm individual to confront someone in their face!

You obviously don’t understand how stress and anxiety can make people behave if they feel threatened. Both ladies felt threatened by the other, none behaved well, but both were obviously feeling overwhelmed.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/09/2020 17:47

I am assuming they asked for proof that they were exempt but couldn’t produce anything so they got a fine

SheepandCow · 27/09/2020 17:47

It's deeply deeply offensive using rape and DV as a justification for no masks. There was another thread a few weeks ago where several survivors posted about their wish for people to wear masks. As one of them said, they'd survived rape and DV and therefore had no desire to let Covid take them. It was the lack of mask wearing that was triggering their PTSD.

HeIenaDove · 27/09/2020 17:48

Would you be willing to tell Georgina Fallows that she is being offensive.

PennyDreadfuI · 27/09/2020 17:50

There's nothing for them to 'produce'.

I'm exempt. I don't have any proof I could produce if challenged by a police officer because none exists. GPs do not issue proof and there is no exemption card/certificate. Therefore the police could not have asked for proof, because there is no such thing.

SheepandCow · 27/09/2020 17:50

Separately, this issue is not unique to London.

In fact I'm sure I've read that more Londoners are wearing masks than some other parts of the UK.
