People STILL not wearing masks on London buses

579 replies

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 14:09

I had to take a journey by bus earlier. There were about 10 people on the bus, three of whom were not wearing masks. Drivers need to stop letting people on without masks - these selfish passengers are putting everyone else’s lives at risk! Sad

I recommend wearing the full head dinosaur mask in situations of many unmasked people. It might just scare them off (more because they'll think you're a weirdo than dangerous but it achieves the goal).

Here's a slightly cheaper one. I have a feeling I'm going to spend far too much money on silly masks but nevermind.

A bus driver should not have to deal with non mask wearers. It is dangerous to confront people like this. Sorry, you just have to ignore.

HeIenaDove · 06/10/2020 20:43

Im incredibly proud to be half Italian. DM is Italian Dad is British.

In Italy they didnt get told to make masks out of old socks. They have been distributed free outside pharmacies. Instead of comparing the Italian people (while treating them as one homogenous mass) to British people.........why are you not comparing the Italian Gov to the British Gov?

"Here in Italy, the rule is "wear a fucking mask or stay at home"

Ive been told there are exemptions. Im quite happy to check that with my uncle and his family who lives in Molise.

Meanwhile here in North Essex Not sure how a homeless woman having to pick up and use a discarded mask so she can access food and medicine is classed as protecting the vulnerable. Which is what happened to someone i spoke to last Friday.

If I was exempt and couldn't wear a mask you wouldn't get me on public transport or in a shop for love nor money. I would do anything and I do mean anything to avoid that. Not wearing a mask isn't a lovely freedom. A perk. It's risking your life and that of others. If you can't you look at ways you can, for example trauma therapy for rape victims especially emdr which will stop the fear of having your face covered. I don't understand the idea that some people so desperately want the right to go out into crowded environments in a global pandemic with a highly contagious possibly fatal disease without protecting themselves or others

JESUS WEPT

@HelenaDove
More immediately urgent than masks is that no-one should be homeless - particularly (but not only) during a pandemic.

HeIenaDove · 06/10/2020 20:54

Some young ppl in Italy see themselves as invincible too.

@MarriedtoDaveGrohl
There are some brilliant masks out there!

HeIenaDove · 06/10/2020 20:58

@SheepandCow i agree. Id like to see test and trace work that one out if (God forbid) it turns out to be Covid,

Re. public transport. Our bus turns up when it feels like it. People on our estate are getting fed up with wasting expensive disposable face masks on buses that dont show up.

TheSeedsOfADream · 06/10/2020 21:06

You don't have to wear a mask in Italy if you have a disability that precludes you from being physically able to wear one. (Govt order from May)

There are! Some of the fashion brands go really nice ones and the shape is great as they fit well. I'm still going for the trusty n95 ones though as they are supposedly most effective. And they are actually better than shit disposable ones to breathe through. I use them several times but rotate them and leave it a few days before picking them up again. My lovely local pharmacist (whose brother died of it) sold me some of their stash. He had randoms in sll the time trying to buy them to flog on eBay 🙄. Back in the day when it was like an apocalypse with literally no one around.

I did trying making them once but they are surprisingly difficult! And supposedly the hepa filter bags used by Henry and Miele are 98% effective and will filter out the very tiny Covid particles. So I bulk bought and found I couldn't breathe through them. Maybe good for filters for cloth ones?

And breaking news from the Times (believe me I don't go looking for it) the damp and rain render them ineffective!

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 06/10/2020 21:11

YABU.

  1. Not the bus drivers job
  2. Highly unlikely anyone's life was in danger. Really, really unlikely. First someone without a mask would have to be infectious, then they'd have to pass it on to someone (unlikely on a short journey where they aren't close, then the person would have to be very susceptible to it and die). Plus masks are only weakly effective anyway.
  3. Absolutely non of your business why someone isn't wearing a mask. These things can be very personal

And very fair that is, and only right. I don't think anyone here disagrees with that. I've seen some utter hysteria about how places like Spain are discriminating against the disabled but I think they are just a LOT more definitive about it and if you can't it's ok. But it has to be a proper cant not a cant be arsed. A proper cant means most of the people wearing them and that means the very few won't be exposed to it or creating risk.

When it started we had Italians over (from the Veneto and Lombardy) all very blasé. Our news was going nuts and they were saying it was no big deal. I've probably already had it 😁

SheepandCow · 06/10/2020 21:50

With the rain issue. Perhaps the full head latex masks aren't such a bad idea afterall?

I've found mine.

He looks familiar but I don't know. I bet it's someone I know well! I'm tired - that's my excuse.

MadameBlobby · 06/10/2020 23:13

@MarriedtoDaveGrohl

Madame blobby you live as far away from London, and its buses as it's possible to. A crowded commuter bus with teenagers not wearing masks is just a living nightmare. This place is full of people, mostly from abroad, not wearing masks. I thought I'd pop into my local Tesco again but no, again, full of people not wearing masks. One middle aged lady look like she wasn't really the type to just not care. But my god that's some risk taking on her part. I won't go near it with a mask let alone without.

The government measures will have to be either lockdown or having mask wearing everywhere enforced. But there will be a lot of screaming and wailing over that too. All could have been averted if some people weren't pricks.

But that's human nature for you. Everyone's special. Or wants to do their own thing. God do I even care? For me, I get to work at home, lose no money, spend weekends with my mate (we alternate houses) and walk my (pre covid) dog. Instead of driving 2 hours a day and paying a fortune to park.

Wear a mask don't wear a mask. This country is being dragged down by the stupid and the selfish and really you can't afford to think about it. I'm going to book my Ocado slots and not give a fuck, I think. I'll leave Tesco's and public transport to it and reflect on Darwin's theory which is playing out quite nicely. But I do feel so terribly sorry for the elderly. They don't deserve this.

I don’t live in London but there are other densely populated cities outside London with high Covid cases. I live the vicinity of one of those. I wasn’t aware not living in London meant your views and experiences weren’t valid/
