People STILL not wearing masks on London buses

custard6543 · 27/09/2020 14:09

I had to take a journey by bus earlier. There were about 10 people on the bus, three of whom were not wearing masks. Drivers need to stop letting people on without masks - these selfish passengers are putting everyone else’s lives at risk! Sad

IntermittentParps · 28/09/2020 16:27

My experience of this is not the same. Admittedly I don't get the bus often, but the few times I have, everyone has had a mask on except one person on one occasion. This is on journeys around residential bits of Hackney, into the West End and into the City/South Bank, so a range of journeys.

@LangClegsInSpace

That’s an interesting idea, it may help some to comply if it was seen to be for the “greater good”. I suppose keeping 2m is easier as you can just jump out of the way. Mask wearing is not as comfortable or cool, and it involves being organised enough to remember a mask- so may not work as well?

100% agree with the second half of your post though.

Theworldisfullofgs · 28/09/2020 16:29

This is a round and round thread. Instead of going around accusing people of things how about a more productive discussion about getting those who can comply to actually, you know, comply.

Yes, but does nothing. Yes of course there will be exceptions and as the word implies that some people not many people.

I suspect we'll be having exactly the same discussion at the next ok down as the economy tanks, people with appointments for other health issues...
I know langclegg disagrees for all sorts of reasons but all the evidence shows that societies that work together have done better.

And I'm sure many of the responses to this post will be 'yes, but' and round we go, just like a mirror image of what is happening in society.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 28/09/2020 16:29

@HeIenaDove

But they made masks mandatory so they could encourage us to cram back onto public transport and back into shops. They don't even care if the mask you are wearing is effective. Any old bit of crap strapped to your face will do. It was all about making people feel 'confident' to get back out and spend money

THIS with fucking bells on.

Yes, this is all true. Even taking the arguments for masks at their absolute highest, I would imagine everyone agrees that it's quite possible to wear a face covering (bear in mind the law doesn't actually require masks per se) in a way that doesn't do anything for safety.

"These posts don't exist. Find one, just one where the words 'all people not wearing masks' or 'banished from public life' are used."

There was a poster a week or so ago arguing that those who couldn't wear masks shouldn't be allowed out of the house at all no matter how distressing that would be for some people.

There are also a number of posters saying that the needs of the majority should come first which doesn't fit with the Equality Act.

Yes, this post a couple of pages back is a good example:

Most of the reasons people list for not being able to wear a mask are made up nonsense. It's not nice - ok get on with it! We pander too much to this sort of thing in this country, it's the "every body's special" pandemic. I have every empathy for those afflicted with some genuine issue but it is theirs to deal with not everybody else's. That may sound harsh but it is undeniably true, there is so much talk about rights we forget about individual responsibilities.

Theworldisfullofgs · 28/09/2020 16:46

On a different thread. Are we all clairvoyant or something Hmm.

And round we go again.

As I get the second letter is less than a week from school to tell me someone has covid.

Theworldisfullofgs · 28/09/2020 16:47

I think many people just enjoy being outraged.

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 17:02

Does no-one else have ugly days when masks come in very handy?
Just me perhaps.

Then again I'm a bit strange. I love my masks. I'm slowly building up a nice little collection of fun animal face masks. (Unfortunately one of my favourites only seems to come in a child size and I'm no good at sewing.)

Theworldisfullofgs · 28/09/2020 17:27

Me too. But I make ours. 3 layered.

DS needs loads for commuting and school.

Proof that there are people who think that even those who are genuinely exempt are pisstakers.

And don't lie, you have absolutely no empathy whatsoever.

I have a few friends like this. One has her own salon and matches the masks to her outfit and gets everything as bright as possible, photo every morning of the current combo. I have yet to see her use the same mask twice.. She brightens my day tbh, the positivity in such a shitty situation.

This is very shallow of me but one of the reasons I wish I could wear a mask is that I think they can look very stylish and hide a multitude of too lazy to put makeup on sins. Also, DH noted on Saturday that his face was lovely and warm even though it was freezing and blowing a gale. I can't even wear a scarf that touches the lower part of my face so winter is miserable.
PennyDreadfuI · 28/09/2020 17:40

I would wear a Vampire's Wife one if I could.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 28/09/2020 17:41

This dude is the absolute king of it though.

@OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer
I love that! He looks brilliant.

@PennyDreadfuI I like the mask you linked to too. I'm sorry you can't wear one (it's definitely good for lazy makeup days).

I want to go mask shopping now.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 28/09/2020 19:08

I do agree with you Batshite. I think some kind of system along with a bit of enforcement. The system so that those people who are exempt are less likely to get hassle. The enforcement so the chancers are less likely to take the Mick.

I hate the idea that people with genuine disabilities and reasons get a hard time when out. But while no one knows who's who and what's what I guess they will. Human beings are difficult to control and don't always behave very well.

But if you can be 90% that the person not wearing a mask has a good reason it's different for many. But track and trace is one of those ideas that's GREAT in theory. In practice......

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 28/09/2020 19:12

Wow check out James! That is colour dedication.

Mind you Africa is all over that mask thing too after Ebola. They had/have low rates because they know how pandemics can go.

I've been wearing masks now for ages. Wore one for over 5 hours a few weeks ago. Always glad to take it off but it's not the worst thing ever. Be nice to get a stylish one though instead of an 'effective' one.

MarriedtoDaveGrohl · 28/09/2020 19:14

Also have any of you girls noticed you do that 'Arabian Nights' thing of using your eyes more with it? I've managed to flirt in mine reasonably well....

MaxinesTaxi · 28/09/2020 19:37

I’m usually wrangling a toddler and a baby while wearing mine. Flirting couldn’t be further from my mind

Yes, lots of African countries can teach us a lot about controlling outbreaks of infectious diseases thanks to what they have learned during recent ebola outbreaks.

Nothing to do with masks, everything to do with contact tracing and isolation.

Good post a few pages back @BatShite, thank you.

@OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer you keep on not giving a damn about people like me having to put our lives (and those of our families) at risk because there are selfish idiots out there who refuse to wear masks on buses with no good reason. I can only guess you’re privileged enough not to use public transport on a regular basis - lucky you. But don’t preach to the likes of me who don’t have that option.

Whilst we've all established some people without masks on will be selfish idiots what do you propose those who cannot wear a mask do if they too don't have the luxery of using other transport?? I appreciate it will make you anxious that there is someone on your bus without a mask but surely they have just as much right to be on the bus as you do ?

Guess again, and you can shove your hypocrisy too. While you have every right to argue that the welfare of your vulnerable group should be prioritised above the welfare of other vulnerable groups, you don't get to pretend that's not what it is. You are doing exactly what you complain about others doing here, the only difference is that you're deluding yourself that you aren't.

And for all the fulminating, you still don't have a clue whether 2 (if I'm being generous, and possibly all 3) of the people without masks were legally exempt or not. The premise of the thread remains ridiculous.
