Will you be getting the track and trace app? If not, why not?

I've downloaded it. The only info I had to give was the first half of my postcode. I'm happy to use it, I have nothing to hide! However, I know there will be people who are unhappy to use it. If you are one of them, please tell me why. Is it a civil liberties issue?

@Frappuccinofan

I hope they lose a lot of customers saying that

CornflakeMum · 25/09/2020 18:30

No because my iPhone 6 is too old.

Jennygentle · 25/09/2020 18:30

Tried but my ‘ancient’ iPhone SE can’t handle it.

viccat · 25/09/2020 18:30

I've got it but I don't really understand how it works tbh.
For example what counts as close contact for the app? For example, in theory, if me and my nextdoor neighbour both sat in our gardens near the fence, wouldn't the blue tooth pick that up even though we're not in contact (as there's a fence in between)?

Orangeblossom7777 · 25/09/2020 18:31

It was reported that false positives could be an issue, due to Bluetooth or something. Also I don't always carry my phone.

tornadoalley · 25/09/2020 18:32

My iPhone 6 works with it. I've clocked McDonald's and an ice rink today.

Apparently it uses strength of signal to estimate your distance to other people. So in theory through the wall to next door it would be weak and not see you a close enough to your neighbour. I guess signal through a fence may still be pretty strong, but you can turn off the contact tracing so I would probably do that when in the garden if I were you. Or leave my phone in the house.

BBC website has a good infographic showing how it determines who is a contact when someone reports a positive test. It allocates points based on distance and duration of the contact between your phone and the positive person's phone - 900 points triggers a notification to isolate.

TooManyMuthaUckas · 25/09/2020 18:42

Can’t download onto my iPhone 5S - it has iOS 12.4, apparently it requires iOS 13.5 or later.

Chewbecca · 25/09/2020 18:42

Yes, I’ve downloaded and so has everyone in my household. I see it as something that might help tackle the rising infection rate which is something I want!

Though DS has been to school & on the bus without checking in which are probably our riskiest activities as a family.

HeIenaDove · 25/09/2020 18:44

@Frappuccinofan Im guessing they didnt need to use the furlough scheme then as they are obviously doing alright.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/09/2020 18:44

I don't have it and won't download it. I don't want to be flagged and ordered to isolate at the pain of a massive fine. I mean, why would you?

lockeddownandcrazy · 25/09/2020 18:44

No chance unless forced - work are saying they might mandate it for all staff. Of choice no way, dont trust what they are going to use/keep data for.

FourPlasticRings · 25/09/2020 18:45

Nope. I go nowhere at the moment and my phone is always shouting at me that I'm running out of storage. Seems a waste of memory.

TheGinGenie · 25/09/2020 18:48

I downloaded it - I'm not bothered about the tracking aspect as my phone tracks where I am all the time anyway. I'm unsurprised that it's a bit shit though, having worked with government. I have just realised I don't know what I'm supposed to do if it goes off though, presumably self isolate but do I have to get a test?

Chocolate4me · 25/09/2020 18:48

I'm going to let it get up and running for a while before using it... I'm a bit concerned about being in close contact to people if they have a false positive... Although in theory, I'm only ever that close to my family and friends so I should know about them having a positive result anyway. I'm also a bit worried about if it makes mistakes whilst being so new, don't fancy self isolating for 14 days if they mess it up!!!! I'd rather give my details verbally

Pikachubaby · 25/09/2020 18:48

Too many possible glitches, I don’t want to have to self isolate over and over, just because:

  • a bus with someone with Covid stops right next to when I walk along the main roads
  • someone has Covid abd puts their phone in the locker close to mine, and even though we never even see eachother or are in the same room, I have to isolate
  • I don’t want the government to track and trace me for any reason anyway

I don’t TRUST the government and the app to use the data sensibly, there will be lots of false alarms and needless quarantines

trappedsincesundaymorn · 25/09/2020 18:48

Nope. I don't have a smart phone and won't be getting one just for 1 app.

Pelleas · 25/09/2020 18:51

No, my phone isn't 'smart'.

winetime89 · 25/09/2020 18:51

Nope don't have it and don't plan to get it.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 25/09/2020 18:52

I have it (the Protect Scotland app) however it requires you to have your bluetooth and location on all the time and so drains my battery quickly. So I switch off bluetooth and location, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I get how it's useful, people might forget to check in to places (if this is how I understand the English/Welsh one works) and so our one basically follows your route as you go about your day and alerts you if you've been close to anyone. But yeah...my battery!

Todaythiscouldbe · 25/09/2020 18:54

No, I'm working from home, going shopping where you don't need to check in anyway and watching DS play football where we have to check in using the FA app. If I go anywhere else DH can check in for us.

Sillysop92 · 25/09/2020 18:56

No I have an iPhone 6 and the App won’t work. I’m not buying a new phone 🤷🏻‍♀️

TinyMetalBirds · 25/09/2020 18:56

No. My ancient Samsung Galaxy can barely manage WhatsApp, I have to regularly delete everything else to keep that going. There's no way it will download anything else.

MadameBlobby · 25/09/2020 18:58

I haven’t downloaded the Scottish one. No privacy or civil liberties issues. I just don’t want to.

HeIenaDove · 25/09/2020 18:59

My phone is too old

I can see this affecting people in flats. Because someone next door or elsewhere in a small block has got Covid the resident will be told to isolate.
