Good idea for a thread, OP. I live in a university town and usually welcome the return of the students in the autumn, as they bring so much to the town, but I am really nervous about the impact of them all coming back this year. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on the national picture.

DominaShantotto · 24/09/2020 13:52

De Montfort haven't started back yet OP. Induction isn't till next week and teaching isn't until October so if there's been cases there the only students around really are either very keen freshers, or international students who have or are doing their quarantine.

prettygreenteacup · 24/09/2020 13:54

I work at Nottingham and we've just closed off our main car park on one of our campuses to set up a testing centre for all students and staff to help catch the asymptomatic cases. We will all be tested regardless of symptoms. It looks like Area 51 out there Shock

TheeStallion · 24/09/2020 13:56

@DominaShantotto

De Montfort appears to be on the Art foundation course which started on 1st of September. ucudemontfort.wordpress.com/2020/09/22/reported-covid-cases-in-vj-patel-letter-to-vc-and-new-dmunionise-issue/

Rules for students in Scotland being tightened in light of the recent outbreaks.

'Scottish university students banned from going to pubs'

'Students are to be ordered not to go to pubs, parties or restaurants in a bid to stem a spate of coronavirus outbreaks at Scottish universities.'

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-54285720

This whole experiment is surely doomed to fail.

GCAcademic · 24/09/2020 19:04

I know for a fact that one of those with the larger outbreaks is four times larger than is being admitted to the press.

CovidChristmas · 24/09/2020 19:04

I think students in Scotland have been told they must not go home as they are now in a new household bubble and households can’t mix. I wonder if this will apply at Christmas?

GCAcademic · 24/09/2020 19:11

Sorry, that wasn't very grammatical! I meant that the outbreak is four times larger than is being reported.

TheeStallion · 24/09/2020 19:45

I think like the UCU said, Universities will be the next care homes in that they will be the next epicentre of the virus, just without significant deaths.

OP posts:
flowerlessorchid · 24/09/2020 20:32

Cases at Gloucestershire as of yesterday.

TheeStallion · 25/09/2020 09:40

University of Hull reporting a small number of cases

PrincessForADay · 25/09/2020 19:54

Does anyone know why Glashow Uni have so many more cases?

gnomeisland · 25/09/2020 20:02

Falmouth Uni have reported a 'small number' of positive covid cases on campus this afternoon.
1st Years returned for 14th Sept, everyone else 21st Sept.

pmac62 · 25/09/2020 20:07

Glasgow Uni had their freshers week last week.

BigBlueHouseBear · 25/09/2020 20:08

The student accommodation that is in isolation is some 12 people flats with shared communal areas. I assume cases just spread that way.

I do think the way student are being treated just now is awful and I hope a middle ground can be found. I work in student wellbeing and the beginning of term is always tough for some, I just really worry the effects of the isolation and not being able to go home will have.

BigBlueHouseBear · 25/09/2020 20:08

Sorry that's Glasgow uni I'm referring to.

gnomeisland · 25/09/2020 20:09

@TheeStallion

I think like the UCU said, Universities will be the next care homes in that they will be the next epicentre of the virus, just without significant deaths.
They may well be the epic-centre, but it'll be like the eye of the storm, where the Uni cohort are barely touched, but it'll spread out into the staff still on campus (and there are a surprising number in different roles) and the wider community.
SoUtterlyGroundDown · 25/09/2020 20:10

Those poor students. First time away from home for many, paying a fortune to be stuck in their rooms with no face to face teaching and no chance of a social life. Added to that, people are taking about them as if they’re filthy disease vectors.

georgedawes · 25/09/2020 20:12

2 halls at Manchester Met Uni isolating with cases.

I really feel for the uni students, this is awful.

Ethelswith · 25/09/2020 22:10

Warwick is one hall (Rootes?) affected, with students living there all restricted. That was yesterday (not heard an update today)

Numbers at Manchester Metropolitan strikingly high!

Wilkolampshade · 25/09/2020 23:51

Few kids isolating at PCV, (halls for Royal College Music) . Otherwise all v normal...
