People will not comply if the restrictions are only social

I really believe that if the restrictions are only social (no more than 6 people, no mixing of households inside,...) people won't comply.

If you are being told to take a packed train or tube to go to work and there mix with your colleagues, will you really not see friends or family at the weekend?

If you see people going to the pub down the road every evening, will you really refrain from inviting a couple over to yours for dinner?
Basically, if you can afford to pay you can socialize, otherwise you can't.

Right but not all grandparents are vulnerable are they? And maybe some grandparents would choose to see their grandkids over being locked away forever even if they are vulnerable?

Thank god the government are for once letting people make their own judgment call on that instead of forcing one draconian rule onto everyone.

SecretSpAD · 21/09/2020 23:26

Im NOT saying all parents are like this...................but it does happen a lot. So some of those without children may well say No. Enough. A step too far

Yes, this. The people I know without children (and my husband and I are in a weird situation where we adopted ours as teenagers when their mother died but are very much childfree otherwise) are in their 40's and 50's. They have worked constantly and contributed to society with no complaints. They have built their lives around their partner and social groups, mostly. Others are widowed amd live alone. Some have stayed single.
it is fundamentally unfair for these people to be deprived the social contacts that they need -in pubs, in restaurants, in private dwellings because some parents cannot be bothered to ensure their children and themselves stick to the rules.

SecretSpAD · 21/09/2020 23:31

My 14 year old is already anxious over the fact that she may give the virus to her grandfather (my father) who is her best friend and rock because she knows that there are kids at her large secondary school who are being irresponsible, along with their parents. We've decided to pull her out of school for her own mental health - after dealing with the meltdown yesterday from a random nightmare where her beloved grandpa was on a ventilator.

Amd we live in Cornwall. We have few cases here.

Worriedmum999 · 21/09/2020 23:55

Hopefully everyone will continue to be selfish (very likely), cases will continue to go up and the unsafe schools and pubs will finally close. Then we can have a proper lockdown for a month over half term while furlough is still running and then hopefully get on top of track and trace for when we come out.

Nat6999 · 22/09/2020 00:05

Boris is doing another one of his we must all pull together, hands, face & space press conferences tomorrow at 8.00pm. Judging by what is on the front pages of tomorrow's papers, it is going to be wfh if you can, everything closes at 10.00pm from Thursday, nothing about schools even though we are heading the same way as when we locked down in March, it won't change much, just kill off even more people & leave more vulnerable people at risk because he wants to be Mr Popular.

Nat6999 · 22/09/2020 00:16

neveradullmoment from what was said this morning, cases are highest in women age 20-40 at the moment, that is most likely mums stood at school gates, teachers, teaching assistants, nurses, careworkers, shop assistants, a hell of a lot of women in low pay jobs who don't have any option but to work or take their children to & from school, the kids taking the virus home won't help either. When will this government realise that they aren't doing enough to protect all of us?

Heffalooomia · 22/09/2020 00:29

After the war we had rationing of food and goods I think from now on we will have to have a rationing of social interactions, or rationing of transmission events

Juststopswimming · 22/09/2020 07:21

I literally cannot believe I have just read "I hope cases go up and then they shut schools" - I am literally lost for words.

I have read a lot of ridiculously selfish shit on this site the last 6 months but that genuinely has to top it.

Worriedmum999 · 22/09/2020 07:27

It’s actually not selfish at all. People in schools are being forced to work in completely unsafe conditions, conditions that most people wouldn’t find acceptable if it was in the workplace. If schools shut then maybe the government would be forced to actually spend some money to make sure that all children got a safe education whilst also keeping school staff ‘Covid safe’. I would argue that it’s all the people shouting for ‘school as normal’ that are the selfish ones.

OverTheRubicon · 22/09/2020 07:28

@Nat6999 so tested positives are going up among women 20-40... But I think this also reflects the massive difference in women being more likely to seek medical care and to do the right thing by isolating (round the world it's blokes getting the majority of fines for breaking quarantine rules, most for social Vs work reasons). It's probably equally high among young men, but they are not testing out of misplaced machismo, lack of bothering to refresh the test website for 24 hours to get one, or not wanting to quarantine.

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 22/09/2020 07:29

Our world beating track and trace system is bollocks, trusting people who have had a few pints to scribble their name on a bit of paper and put it in a box in Wetherspoons and similar isn't world beating, it's utter shite. Why should we believe anything these idiots say to us and any of the rules?? People are fed up and fucked off. We are a laughing stock.

Yes because the government have always been so keen to throw money at schools.

If you dont think schools are safe then take your kids out and let the rest of us get on with it.

Wanting for cases to go up so that the outcome that you want? I'm sorry but I find that so distasteful I'm not even going to acknowledge it properly.

Worriedmum999 · 22/09/2020 07:42

Well they aren’t safe. Mainly because of selfish arseholes who want life to carry on as normal so increasing community spread.

Apple222 · 22/09/2020 07:49

We are in an area of local lockdown. Our head basically told us that not only is it our moral duty to comply with all the Covid legislation but also to limit our social activities within what's still allowed. (In other words - don't go down the pub.)

However, if the parents are going to think like some of you on here that if schools are open then they can do what they like then we are well and truly fcked’

This.

I work in the care sector and believe that I have a responsibility to restrict my social contact for the benefit of my patients and colleagues. However it frustrates me when I see other people going about their normal lives, socialising and gathering in groups.

If schools close, the impact on jobs, and businesses, let alone children is huge. It’s unlikely we will have another furlough scheme which puts people at risk.

EOHO gave a lot of people the impression we were back to normal and gave the message that socialising was to be encouraged. It’s hard for the hospitality sector but if we have to sacrifice something then yes, close the pubs and restaurants because it seems to be the only language some people understand.

and what about the selfish arseholes who think that covid is king and trumps everything else? That mental health and poverty arent important? Those selfish arseholes who seem to conveniently forget that the covid fatality rate is LESS THAN 1%???

I utterly, utterly despair.

IloveJKRowling · 22/09/2020 07:51

How about just have a modicum of safety measures in school? Like masks? Costs nothing and sends a clear message.

Problem is, schools are sending out the message covid has gone - both kids asked me after their first day back 'is coronavirus gone now, Mummy?' so I say no and they say 'why is school back to normal then?' good question

IloveJKRowling · 22/09/2020 07:54

Also, 10pm closing seems designed to make people who are pissed go to other people's houses, to be honest.

ineedaholidaynow · 22/09/2020 07:55

@Juststopswimming but that is what it is at the moment and so people breaking the rules will result in schools closing, and how will that help people?

Juststopswimming · 22/09/2020 07:57

genuine question - do you honestly think that masks on 4 and 5 year olds will make school "safer"?

School is not normal where we are - no mixing of bubbles, constant hand washing, no assemblies, strict drop off and pick up times, having to sit at one desk all day. Its very very different from what it was like in the spring. Surely its a good thing that your kids are experiencing some 'normality' from school and not constantly reminded of this utter nightmare we are living through?

Toptotoeunicolour · 22/09/2020 08:01

If it is true that people won't bother SC as long as schools are open, then I think we are effectively just going for herd immunity, not because the government want it or ordained it but because the British people are too stupid to apply their own common sense. It's not even like Sweden where people are naturally more community minded and pragmatic. It's just a fucking wilderness in the UK and we'll get what we deserve.

Cutthetoastupwrong · 22/09/2020 08:01

I remember @Worriedmum999 posting a grinning emoji on another thread at the thought of another lockdown so I'm not surprised she wants more cases

That said I do think those working in schools are in a very difficult position, but I'm pretty sure hoping that cases rise isn't a kind strategy

Parmavioletmum · 22/09/2020 08:01

I think it's because there seems to be no logic to the rule. I saw a comparison on here previously that it's a law like saying you can't drive drunk unless it's a Monday.
My kids can go to school, we can go to work, soft play, nursery, to the pub or restaurant but can no longer visit my parents in there home. I'm generally a rule follower but in this case I will continue to see my parents. There is no logic behind the governments rule this time, and if I could afford to see them at a pub or restaurant that would be acceptable.

Parmavioletmum · 22/09/2020 08:02

Re main topic I really don't know what the answer is but will adhere to new restrictions even though it will be extremely hard

That's utterly grim and yet doesnt surprise me in the least.

These threads certainly highlight the posters who find a full lockdown is #livingtheirbestlife and they want everyone else to be right there with them.

Genuinely horrifying.
