Have state school teachers faced redundancy for not working during lockdown?

notevenat20 · 19/09/2020 07:43

I recently read

I think those of us who work in the private sector understand we are going to have to work during periods of self isolation whilst juggling family. It was the same during lockdown. We want to keep our jobs so we will have to provide the service.

This got me wondering, is this a pressure state school teachers feel too?

Certainly at DC’s school no educational provision was given for almost all of lockdown (there were 6 key worker children in the school, out of 420).

This attempt to raise these sorts of issues was literally started by another poster on another thread completely apropos of nothing. She has been ignored because everyone is having a civil discussion and realises it isn't the point of the thread. there are thread hijackers, and there are those who start threads deliberately to provoke.

notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:25

we have not learnt this at all.

Why haven't you learned this? The thread is long but there are a number of examples of schools who provided nothing or next to nothing.

pom Your tone to me was a bit off and I’m pretty neutral.

No you're not. Your comment:

These threads turn nasty because a few posters refuse to accept that some schools/teachers made little effort and trot out unhelpful we’re not childcare/parents can’t be bothered comments.

shows how not neutral you are. These threads 'turn nasty' because of teachers, according to you, not because, as teachers have told you several times now, there's an agenda behind them.

And yet when teachers explain that there has been a concerted campaign over months by name-changers, trolls, political plants and campaigners to bash teachers (and not just on here, in the media too), you just say 'I don't read rants' and 'I'm a bit naive about that'

No 'oh, I get it now, yeah that's pretty shit' or 'teachers must be bloody fed up of being vilified' or 'ok, you can spot the trolls better than me', its 'your tone to me was a bit off'.

Of course it was a bit off. You're blaming teachers, policing their behaviour and telling them off for how they post, and, while claiming to be neutral, making no similar posts directed at the OP and co.

And there are a number of posts that have pointed out about the provision that was provided - mine for instance which again you choose to ignore.

The only point I could see about this thread starting was to provoke unnecessary criticism.

@notevenat20

I just reread it just in case *@NotDonna*

I don't see a request to sack someone.

Try reading your title. Stop gaslighting.
notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:33

@NotDonna

I can see the title. It may be you read it differently to me.

What does gaslighting mean?

OP posts:
Saltandvinegar86 · 20/09/2020 10:36

You know what maybe you are right OP. Certainly you appear to have been failed by the education system. My apologies.

notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:36

And there are a number of posts that have pointed out about the provision that was provided - mine for instance which again you choose to ignore.

I hope this doesn't sound bad but if I have 10 black pebbles and 10 white pebbles, you can't say there are 20 black pebbles by just pointing at the 10 black pebbles over and over again.

I have never said all schools are bad. I am just very sad about the ones that were terrible over lockdown.

OP posts:
notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:38

@Saltandvinegar86

That's very good of you. Thank you.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 20/09/2020 10:39

Are you sad about the schools that are terrible outside of lockdown too, OP, or do you only care if it affects your kids?

Now that your eyes have been opened to the inequalities in education provision in the state sector, what are you going to do about it?

NotDonna · 20/09/2020 10:39

And your title suggests you want redundancies. You mean sackings really but I’ll not be pedantic.
Gaslighting = pretending you didn’t say something when you did. Saying you never mentioned redundancies/sacking etc when you did.

Pomegranatepompom · 20/09/2020 10:39

@noblegiraffe I do see what you mean, I’m
Basing my replies on my experience and posts and not what the OP is writing. I’m more than likely biased due to our school experience.
However, I’m far more likely to pay attention to the reasoned responses.
Regarding my comment about teacher responses - I stand by that, you don’t have to look hard to find those types of responses, you’re probably right as well though in the comments you’re responding too.
This happens all the time on nhs threads and they go the same way as the teacher ones with rarely anyone defending the nhs. So it’s not a teacher thing uniquely.
It’s just nature - you picked apart my post as you didn’t like what I said, when actually if you asked my DC school if I was neutral about teachers/education, I’m pretty sure they’d say I was very supportive. So easy to misinterpret isn’t it ?

Saltandvinegar86 · 20/09/2020 10:39

Wow. Even the youngest kids I teach can distinguish tone.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/09/2020 10:40

Just looking at your opening post @notevenat20 where you say only 6 children were in, do you know whether that was the only number who took up the places or the school managed to somehow limit them.

Schools I deal with certainly didn’t have all KW children in but places were offered, it was the parents choice whether to send them in.

Also did they then have children in when the pupils from eligible classes were allowed in?

NotDonna · 20/09/2020 10:42

You don’t sound sad about educational inequalities.

notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:43

They sent a series of emails making it clear that even though you were allowed to, they really really didn't want you to send your child in. It looks like it was pretty effective as key workers I know didn't send their children in as a result.

notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:45

You don’t sound sad about educational inequalities.

That's another aspect of the non provision of education by some state schools that makes me cross! It has massively increased the inequality of education between private and state schools

Gaslighting = pretending you didn’t say something when you did. Saying you never mentioned redundancies/sacking etc when you did.

Thanks! Do you know why it is gas lighting?

SmileEachDay · 20/09/2020 10:47

The government policy when we went into lockdown was to keep your child at home if you possibly could, even if you were a KW.

mineofuselessinformation · 20/09/2020 10:49

WHY ON EARTH IS ANYONE FEEDING THIS??????

NotDonna · 20/09/2020 10:52

@mineofuselessinformation

WHY ON EARTH IS ANYONE FEEDING THIS??????
Indeed. I’m out.
noblegiraffe · 20/09/2020 10:58

rarely anyone defending the nhs

I dunno, as a country we clapped, we lit things up blue, we put rainbows in windows, we donated millions to Captain Tom, thousands volunteered to help out. If people slate the NHS on a MN thread (and I'm fully aware that they do), you can always remember those things as positives from an obviously grateful nation.

Teachers are feeling pretty beleaguered right now with campaigns from the government, parental groups and others to keep the public against us, and on top of that it has been pretty fucking stressful this last couple of weeks going into what is called by SAGE one of the highest risk environments you can go into with no mitigation measures while being told that it's fine.

Tetchy responses on MN should be the least of it. Teachers quitting in large numbers is a real possibility. And of course that is what lots of teachers on MN have been told to do when they have raised concerns.

The OP wants teachers to be sacked too.

There currently aren't enough teachers to go around as it is.

So, what do you think should be done, pom?

borntobequiet · 20/09/2020 11:03

Why it’s called gaslighting:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting

Isn’t it great there are teachers on these threads to look things up for you?

You’re welcome.

borntobequiet · 20/09/2020 11:05

You have to scroll down to the Etymology section BTW

Pomegranatepompom · 20/09/2020 11:05

Honestly - I think there should have a standard set.

I really don’t wish to argue or prolong this at the moment.
Have a good day.
