Have state school teachers faced redundancy for not working during lockdown?

notevenat20 · 19/09/2020 07:43

I recently read

I think those of us who work in the private sector understand we are going to have to work during periods of self isolation whilst juggling family. It was the same during lockdown. We want to keep our jobs so we will have to provide the service.

This got me wondering, is this a pressure state school teachers feel too?

Certainly at DC’s school no educational provision was given for almost all of lockdown (there were 6 key worker children in the school, out of 420).

"I have noticed the snark is only detected incoming on this thread."

Well, there were a few (entirely reasonable) queries about your apparent misunderstanding of how redundancy works.

ineedaholidaynow · 21/09/2020 11:56

Parents are dipping into their pockets for our local schools too for which I am eternally grateful, but I don't want people coming on here complaining when schools can't provide laptops, when it won't be the schools' fault. If the Government expect schools to provide a remote teaching provision surely it would make sense for the Government to fund that provision.

"If the Government expect schools to provide a remote teaching provision surely it would make sense for the Government to fund that provision."

Yeah, and it would also be quite nice if they provided them for teachers too!

ineedaholidaynow · 21/09/2020 12:05

That also would help @CallmeAngelina. I don't think some parents realise that many teachers don't have school laptops, which is quite crucial when having to provide remote learning from home, and for safeguarding reasons they are not meant to use their own equipment.

Pomegranatepompom · 21/09/2020 12:15

I feel reassured today that the school are preparing for 2 online lesson per day if needed. I wish they’d been able to facilitate something more May-July but glad they are preparing now.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 21/09/2020 12:16

@notevenat20

Really? Is that the best you can do?

I have noticed the snark is only detected incoming on this thread.

The snark was the creation of this thread.
Buttybach · 21/09/2020 12:19

I am a state school TA in the SEN sector and I certainly worked all the way through the lockdown with pupils of key workers.
The pay I receive is shockingly poor but I like my job.

It astounds me that several GP surgeries are still not seeing patients in my area.
It's all being done by email

Parker231 · 21/09/2020 12:25

@Buttybach - my DH is a GP. Their surgery, and the majority were open throughout. Many appointments are currently being done by phone and video. Lots of patients are preferring this as they can get a quicker appointment. Where the GP considers it necessary, face to face appointments take place.

GP surgeries are like schools in that the variety of quality of provision is just vast.

Lewis Carroll surely.

@noblegiraffe

Sadly the main question is what will prevent those schools who provided nothing from doing it again.

Ofsted. There are now guidelines for remote teaching which were lacking during lockdown, schools to be ready by end of September.

www.tes.com/news/schools-need-remote-teaching-plans-end-september

You could have just bloody asked at the start, yes?

Well there you go, the OP asked what she considered to be the main question (after 600 posts), I answered it, including a detailed link, and she completely ignored this and chose to bicker instead.

That’s what she really wanted from this thread.

Piggywaspushed · 21/09/2020 17:24

I am an English teacher OP. Other than prostrating myself for the missing question mark , I am not sure what exegesis you require. You have mentions downright rudeness several times in order to appear upset. My detailed exegesis of your posts is that you are not at all upset but are enjoying the hunting of said snark. And your response to my simple question is most revealing.

A mechanism exists for reporting aggressive posts to MNHQ.

I haven't taken out any anger on anyone here.

LOL

I have received some pretty snarky and on one occasion straight up rude personal comments though.

If you can't take it don't dish it out.

It would be ridiculous to suggest that talking about terrible educational provision from a school is a risk to the mental health of teachers in general.

In general 6 months of continual belittling, name calling and gaslighting would be called abuse.

Some of this is just arguing for the sake of it.

I wasn't saying that my original question should be cancelled and replaced by the question of what steps the govt has taken to make sure there will be some education in the case of another lockdown. I was talking in the context of the flow of conversation.

Also, what you call ignoring for several hours, I call having something else to do.

Also, what you call ignoring for several hours, I call having something else to do.

And yet you were posting on this thread after I answered your question.

And even now you’re not engaging with the answer.

Because that wasn’t the point of the thread.

As we said all along.

It’s good though, isn’t it, that future provision will be better?

Did you read noble’s link?

Spot on.
notevenat20 · 22/09/2020 08:03

It is remarkable that you regard an honest personal description of appalling educational provision as being a reason to abuse someone. I feel I cannot be the first to experience this on MN.

It’s good though, isn’t it, that future provision will be better?

I am pleased ofsted/the govt has stepped up on this. It seems likely the quality of what is provided will still vary a lot though. The reason DCs school did nothing was that was what they believed was right. I don’t know if they can be forced to believe children need to be educated and parents need support if home schooling.

notevenat20 · 22/09/2020 08:11

Yes that would be awful. Has anyone being doing that to you?

The wiki says “gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment, often evoking in them cognitive dissonance and other changes, including low self-esteem. Using denial, misdirection, contradiction, and misinformation, gaslighting involves attempts to destabilize the victim and delegitimize the victim's beliefs. Instances can range from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents occurred, to belittling the victim's emotions and feelings, to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of disorienting the victim.”

Who has been doing that to you?

In any case, I wish you peace.

OP move on now, it’s getting unhealthy

What is not remarkable is you playing the victim card,

Oh woe is you.

Build a bridge and get over it.

Agreed. Op isn’t worth anybody’s time, particularly any educated professional persons. There is so much ignorance and hate in everything she(?) writes.

Hmmm.. Does every thread about schools end like this?

Just to be clear, I don't hate anyone . I am not sure if I am ignorant but I would like to think not. Let's move on and discuss lockdown (something cheery).

I really feel like I'm on the brink of depression. I've been here before. Please can you just stop OP? Sad The situation is bleak and challenging enough without the teacher hatred.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 22/09/2020 19:23

@notevenat20. All this grudge holding is not good for you. Your children are now in another school, move on. I think you now need some positivity in your life.
