FT reports that Sage are looking at a 2 week national lockdown to coincide with October half-term.

@Ecosse yep. You're right and the scientists are wrong. Got that loudly and clearly. After all all, I know loads of people that after a cold or flu have had psychosis, kidney problems, strokes, spinal infections and mobility problems.

300 countries all submitting observations and records of neurological defecits after covid. Estimates vary but roughly 50% it seems to stand at. But you stick with your 1%.They all have it wrong. Obviously.

SueEllenMishke · 18/09/2020 00:07

My ward ( of nearly 10,000 people) has had less than 10 cases in the last month and not many more overall since March.

Another lockdown would cripple local businesses.

Worriedmum999 · 18/09/2020 00:09

Vaccines usually take years to get developed and tested as they do not have millions of pounds thrown at them so all the funding considerations slow them down. We will have a vaccine in the near future. It may not be absolutely fantastic but it might be enough to allow us to get on top of it while better ones continue to be developed. Look how far they have come in 6 months. That would take 5 years without all the money.

Hearwego · 18/09/2020 00:09

Two weeks? Do you really believe it would be just two weeks? Look at last time..

Furlough is ending in October and there won’t be another one. How realistically can we have another lockdown with no furlough? Who will pay people’s wages? How will they pay their bills? Surely people will wonder what the point in living is???

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 18/09/2020 00:09

I cant see it being 2 weeks.

We were told there wouldnt3be another seiss payment. Im higher risk. Im genuinely scared

Hearwego · 18/09/2020 00:13

But how many times do we lockdown? Surely the public will say enough is enough.
Until a vaccine is found, maybe herd immunity and sheltering the vulnerable are the only realistic solutions?...

Worriedmum999 · 18/09/2020 00:15

If we leave lockdown to half term we will have hundreds of thousands of new cases every day and back to peak level of deaths. People don’t seem to understand lag and exponential growth. And we will have to have a long lockdown again. If we locked down now a few week would be enough to get cases down low again to have another bash at test and trace with the new labs up and running to increase capacity. And hopefully a more sensible way for returning to school. Plus the lockdown could be done before furlough ends.

housemdwaswrong · 18/09/2020 00:17

Herd immunity has never been acquired without a vaccine, and v. little chance as re-infections are now becoming evident.

Sheltering the vulnerable isn't effective if they can't pay their bills...plus many vulnerable are key workers etc.

caringcarer · 18/09/2020 00:17

This evening I did argashop. I am stocking up just in case with frozen food, tins, paracetamol, cough medicine, and vitamin D3 tablets. Also stationery and craft materials. My pantry is now full so if we are in lockdown at least we will be comfortable. Plenty of hand sanitizer, toilet rolls and liquid soap around ATM.

Ecosse · 18/09/2020 00:21

@housemdwaswrong

50% of people who get COVID have no symptoms and at least another 30% will have incredibly mild ones so your 50% figure for long term issues cannot be true.

dollypartonscoat · 18/09/2020 00:26

"50% of people who get COVID have no symptoms and at least another 30% will have incredibly mild ones so your 50% figure for long term issues cannot be true"

If ever I've seen plucked out of thin air percentages 🤣

Idontlikeyoghurt · 18/09/2020 00:30

Sorry I don't mean to be rude but why post something like this when it heightens anxiety for people? We're all in a difficult situation at the moment, we don't need this constant bombardment of negativity.

Hearwego · 18/09/2020 00:33

Hopefully not the whole toilet roll and pasta fiascos again, by those selfish arseholes last time...

sorryforswearing · 18/09/2020 00:33

Londonmummy66
Perhaps it would be better to just cancel half term altogether - not as if the children haven't missed enough school already...

Yes that’s a good idea. Never mind that school staff are entitled to their holidays just like everybody else. They’ll probably all be off sick by then anyway.

GobblingWeasel · 18/09/2020 00:38

Please don't add links to subscribe only sites, that is just irritating and not helpful

PinkMacaron · 18/09/2020 00:39

Does anyone know what we'll be using to barter with when the economy collapses? Would it be best to stockpile fuel, livestock or booze?

Justgivemewine · 18/09/2020 00:46

@PinkMacaron I have massive supplies of toilet paper, (nothing to do with lockdown just took advantage of a very special offer 😁)

I’d be happy to trade for wine/cider if necessary

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 18/09/2020 00:47

@Worriedmum999 that is NOT why vaccines takes years to develop, it's because it takes time to monitor the side effects, short term and LONG term ones. Get a grip!

middleager · 18/09/2020 00:50

In W Cornwall, people are distancing, they're doing their socialising outside and mask wearing in shops is pretty much 100%. Cases are startlingly low.

But isn't this due to size and population density and demographics rather than being good little boys and girls? Just a postcode lottery, no special skills?

I live in a city of 1million with many built up densley populated areas. Lots of multi generational living, more frontline workers etc. Our schools are being hit hard and our communities. While I admit some are not complying, the city is far bigger than the whole of Cornwall and this is part of the problem. Lots of us ARE complying still but in a city this size it is much harder to police.

That said, if we did have as few cases as you then I can absolutely see why you would find a lockdown unfair.

housemdwaswrong · 18/09/2020 00:52

This is the first article:

www.bbc.com/future/article/20200622-the-long-term-effects-of-covid-19-infection.

This is the first published study they refer to;
www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2008597

Since then 300 studies have confirmed long term effects.

Long term cardiac effects, 8-12%
www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1871402120300539

There is plenty of evidence to say that there are long term.effects. obviously not for those who are not symptomatix, and it increases with severity. For you to say there is no evidence of long term effects is blatantly wrong, unless strokes and brain injuries have no long term effects.

In a study in Bristol, 74% of 110 people followed up after 3 months still had effects. Thats a tad more than 1%.

www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-patients-complications-covid-19-study-southmead-hospital-bristol-a9678391.html

I shan't bother replying again, as you are determined nor to acknowledge it despite the evidence, but at least others may benefit from the links.

This thread is another classic for Scaremongering Central

Bluelinings · 18/09/2020 01:28

Herd immunity requires a vaccine. Sensible scientists have repeatedly said this. That’s why we never achieved herd immunity after hundreds of years of so many illnesses running rampant.

Bluelinings · 18/09/2020 01:29
