But not any more. So how do we decide when some people's rights (including right to life) mean that others lose their rights. There have always been people who could get very sick and even die if they were to catch anyone of a number of viruses that circulate every year. No one suggested everyone should give up their right to personal liberty to prevent that. There have always been people who are killed on the roads every year. No one suggested that non essential car journeys should be banned to reduce or prevent this. Why are people with cancer's lives seen as less worth saving than those who might catch Covid? Why are people OK with this? How can the government make it illegal for me to see my parents?

FOJN Agree, but these rights have been removed.

I thought the same @Wolfiefan

Thank you Ohthegoats - those stats are interesting.

SmileEachDay · 16/09/2020 22:26

OP

What do you you think the..umm..end game is?

Or are you just pissed off that it’s inconvenient?

minipie · 16/09/2020 22:27

Look up the articles by Jonathan Sumption, eminent QC and Supreme Court judge. He agrees with you OP that these infringements of liberties are not justified.

TheSeedsOfADream · 16/09/2020 22:28

@Wolfiefan

Oh dear God it’s you again. MN can we mute a poster? Froth somewhere else for a change OP.
Amen.

Trees, with the best of intentions, you post this every couple of days, and you get the same answers. You've been told time and again why the UK couldn't follow Sweden (not that Sweden has done brilliantly compared to its neighbours either) Last time I looked on MN schools were open, education is happening and teachers are going above and beyond.
The govt haven't made it illegal to see your parents unless you plan on meeting them at a rave with another 1500 people.

And?
Which bit isn't being respected?

Treesofwood · 16/09/2020 22:32

Theseedsofadream 240 children can be prevented from attending school for two weeks if one child tests positive. That's denying them an education. It's seen as so detrimental to a child that parents are taken to court, fined and even imprisoned.

Yes I have posted various points. I like to explore it. I'm posting in the coronavirus section. Happy for people to scroll on by.

housemdwaswrong · 16/09/2020 22:34

@ohthegoats tell me about it. They've done badly. No logic at all in the argument. I tend to switch off as soon as it's mentioned but sidings I have to respond.

We are number 8/150 in deaths per million and Sweden are number 11, with ISA and Italy in-between us. Hardly bucking the trend.

They closed their secondary schools and universities, and their primary schools which remained open have an average class size of 19. Restaurants had reduced capacity and businesses reduced hours, and allowed people to work from home. Hardly carrying on as normal.

And breathe. Today's rant over.

FOJN · 16/09/2020 22:34

You missed the point completely. You are all about rights but don't think you have any responsibility to the rest of society.

I'm slightly fed up of hearing about how people who are uncomplainingly compliant with restrictions are like sheep and too stupid to think for ourselves, the point is usually made by someone who got their Covid conspiracy information off Twitter. I've done my research thanks and am willing to adhere to the restrictions for now. They are shit for lots of people but we're just trying to make the best of it and get through it.

RingORingORoses · 16/09/2020 22:35

so you want the right to potentially kill off your parents? what about them, and their 'rights'??

Treesofwood · 16/09/2020 22:36

Smileeachday I honestly don't know. Makes no sense to me. If it's just about saving lives then we could give up lots more rights. Take it to the extreme and we can share kidneys, enforce blood transfusions, enforce exercise, all would save lives. But we don't do it.

2 weeks missed school is a small price to pay for another human life taken away prematurely. I don't understand why people still don't realise that we can't possibly let this rip through unchecked. The virus doesn't care about your rights or liberties.
Stinkywizzleteets · 16/09/2020 22:39

Responsibilities come before rights. Very few human rights are unqualified.

Precisely which human rights are you being denied right now op? - if you could refer specifically to the relevant legislation you are using to defend your opinion perhaps we can answer your Questions more appropriately.

housemdwaswrong · 16/09/2020 22:40

'Take it to the extreme and we can share kidneys, enforce blood transfusions, enforce exercise, all would save lives. But we don't do it.'

Odd. Share kidneys?

People can choose to exercise, choose to smoke, choose to drive a car, choose whether to have a blood transfusion. You can't choose whether to catch a virus or not.

Treesofwood · 16/09/2020 22:41

Votesforpedro So why have we allowed children to go to school unwell in the past? Two weeks quarantine for flu symptoms could have prevented transmission and saved a life. Ditto chicken pox, or other illnesses that can be dangerous for those with a weakened immune system.

OP posts:
housemdwaswrong · 16/09/2020 22:42

Under the human rights legislation, under the right to education section, govt can force a school to take health and safety measures.

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 16/09/2020 22:42

I completely agree and can’t believe how many on here don’t! I got it at the start because we wasn’t prepared and didn’t know enough about it. Now we are prepared and know so much more so can’t understand why all these restrictions are still in place. Protect the elderly and most vulnerable and let the rest get back to their lives but with measures in place such as keep washing your hands keep distance where possible.maybe if your parents are elderly go for a cuppa in the garden but don’t tell us that a family of 5 cannot go and see the grandparents at all!! It’s all gone too far and the fact we know that most people have the virus with little or no symptoms makes it even worse! Massive overreaction that will cause far more deaths for years to come than the virus ever could!

WouldBeGood · 16/09/2020 22:44

I do not understand how rights previously enshrined as cardinal, such as those you describe, have been ridden roughshod over and surrendered so easily. It’s terrifying. And I think a generation will reap the consequences.

PremierInn · 16/09/2020 22:44

Totally agree

Treesofwood · 16/09/2020 22:44

Housemd You only need one kidney. Someone else might need your other one. If saving lives is the ultimate goal then we could do this.
We could legislate that any one with a BMI of 30 or over has to exercise for an hour a day and if they don't their neighbour can report them to the police. That will save lives (albeit their own)
We can ban cigarettes.
We could ban alcohol.
Is saving lives the only and ultimate goal?
And whilst you can't choose whether or not to catch a virus you can eat well, sleep well, exercise. All improves your overall health and immune system.

OP posts:
Treesofwood · 16/09/2020 22:48

Even people who have current antibodies and whose plasma is being harvested to save others are not exempt from quarantine/self isolation/house arrest (delete as appropriate) Where is the sense in that?

OP posts:
Funkypolar · 16/09/2020 22:48

Those rights are never coming back.

amusedtodeath1 · 16/09/2020 22:51

Education = Happening.
Liberty = Happening
Family Time = Happening

The fact that you can't do exactly what you want, how you want, when you want doesn't take those things away, it just means that you have to act like a responsible adult and deal with it.

What's the alternative, metaphorically stamping your feet repeatedly on an internet forum???
