Lots of things out of stock in the supermarket again?

Wondering if it's just us locally but pasta, toilet roll, tinned tomatoes and long life stuff all seem to be completely out of stock again :(

Is it the same when you are? I was hoping this wouldn't happen again but I suppose with the new rule brought in, people realising Christmas isn't going to be the same as usual and Brexit looming, perhaps people have started stocking up.

It's all so bloody depressing

As I remember, Tesco announced earlier this year that they were phasing out the multipacks to reduce plastic use and replacing them with multi buy offers on individual tins instead

I hope this is true. There's no need to band tins up in packs of 3, 4, 6 etc in order to do multipack pricing, the supermarket tills are perfectly capable of doing the discounts without using the plastic.

roundtable · 17/09/2020 03:57

The was an issue with tinned sweetcorn and contamination so lots of it was recalled. I'd imagine it may be the same with other tinned goods.

Crankycranium0 · 17/09/2020 04:13

Try the local aldi, the ones near me are always well stocked up. Been there a lot since all this started and cant fault them.

@iwishiwasonhol

i work for a supermarket ,and we are having to limit loo roll ,hand soap and pasta to 2per customer
Whereabouts are you @iwishiwasonhol?
ElizabethMainwaring · 17/09/2020 04:25

@NotAKaren

Noticed some big gaps on the cleaning products shelves in a supermarket yesterday
I was expecting the cleaning products situation to be worse than it is, due to teachers buying stuff to clean their classrooms. Bleach was rationed by several supermarkets last month, but it seems ok now.

Ours was not available before that. It won’t have helped though.
GreyishDays · 17/09/2020 06:56

Looks like I’m remembering wrongly, tinned sweet corn was recalled in early May.

onlinelinda · 17/09/2020 07:11

Shops are fine around here.

@BigChocFrenzy

"Agree that these sorts of posts are purely intended to scaremonger and should be banned. Completely irresponsible"

The OP just said quite calmly what was happening in her area and asked if others had noticed it
Some have;some haven't
No big deal.
People on MN are always asking if someone else has similar problems to them

It's certainly not a banning issue

  • if we ever get to the stage where there has to be censorship of moderate OPs like this, to keep public order
... that's when it's time to panic
Agree.

Ibuprofen out of stock in lots of local supermarkets

Jakobabear · 17/09/2020 11:07

I work at Tesco and there's absolutely no need to worry and go out and panic buy. There's no supplier issues and apart from a few problems with fresh produce due to the weather ruining crops there's been nothing else. If people go out and start buying ridiculous amounts the limits will have to be put back in place and no one wants that situation again.

Enoughnowstop · 17/09/2020 11:52

I only shop online with Asda. Their flour situation has never improved, handwash can be problematic (unless you are happy to pay top whack) and sweetcorn has been an issue for months. But not noticed any other issues. Yeast sometimes an issue. Pasta was a problem for a long time, as was tinned tomatoes and tomato puree but that has been sorted for a couple of months now.

BlueBlancmange · 17/09/2020 13:25

Slightly on a tangent but I did a Tesco online shop the other day and it said the regular size tin of Heinz baked beans has been removed from their range. Does any one know why this is? It seems odd that such a popular product would just be removed from the range.

FiveTwoFaster · 17/09/2020 14:51

Zero own brand painkillers of either ibuprofen or paracetamol in my big tesco. And no single portion tupperware left.

Could be worse! Plenty of tinned tomatoes / pasta / loopaper. I did think some people in there were stocking up though but they could have been doing a weekly shop for a family of 7.... who mostly eat tinned food.

BreconBeBuggered · 17/09/2020 15:28

No problems getting supermarket painkillers here, and even the sweetcorn was back on the shelves! Proper Green Giant, full choice of pack size or singles. Regret to say that in my excitement I failed to check for all the varieties.

littlemsattitude · 17/09/2020 15:53

I always keep my cupboards full on a one out one in basis but that's because I have nobody to shop for me if we have to self isolate.

thenightsky · 17/09/2020 16:48

I couldn't get regular sized tins of Heinz Baked beans on Tesco delivery this week, but they have the low sugar and ones with sausages still there. Went in Morrisons as I passed one on the off-chance today - plenty in there. Must just be a Tesco thing.

MinaMurray · 17/09/2020 16:51

In Tesco again today, and the only thing on my list that I couldn’t get was the sort of Twinings tea bags I like. Plenty of other alternative brands though, so I just chucked one of those in the trolley.

Stacks of flour on the shelves too, I’m planning some baking at the weekend and the baking aisle was fully stocked with different varieties of flour and stuff for decorating cakes.

Just find it weird that such a standard product would be removed from the range. I was a bit worried it had been recalled, but I can't see anything online. I suppose it would specify that anyway if it was the case.
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/09/2020 17:19

I haven't been able to get apple squash since morrisons moved to store delivery rather than central warehouse.

I started a shop last night and really random things are out of stock - all 3 types of mustard that I usually have, for example.
Anything other than expensive branded mayo.
Then the usual, beans, tinned tomatoes etc.

sleepyhead · 17/09/2020 17:22

Has anyone else had a problem with getting cheap big bottles of bubble bath since this all kicked off?

Tesco used to do big own brand ones the same scents as their handwash and shower gel for less than a pound and I've not seen them for ages.

I've always suspected it's just the same stuff poured into different sized bottles and priced accordingly so I'm suspicious that they're bottling it all up as handwash now and making a fortune Hmm

ifonly4 · 17/09/2020 17:44

Pasta has been low for a couple of weeks, but there's always been a choice. I've done a mega shop for us today in two different shops and bought everything in list. Our numbers are fairly low here, so maybe locals aren't panicking

peonyblossom · 17/09/2020 17:50

Everything seems fine locally here. Delivery slots ok too.

I have kept a full freezer and larder since the beginning of the year (which was stocked slowly over December, January and February, no panic buying!) and I will continue to do so. We tend to eat what we buy that week fresh (meat, fish etc) and keep the freezer full just rotating things so that nothing stays in the freezer for months.

I'm no 'prepper' by any means but I think it's sensible to keep yourselves stocked well at the current time.

MinaMurray · 17/09/2020 18:07

There is less bubble bath in my Tesco, but there’s also a lot more shelf space devoted to hand sanitiser and liquid soap.
The bubble baths are in the same section, so I think they’ve bumped some of the bubble bath range off the shelves to make more room for the hand sanitiser & soap.
